I've got to hand it to Jessica T. She's absolutely right that Make-Out Room is all about the right bands on the right nights. From the outside, it looks pretty dumpy, like the kind of place where you would absolutely not have a good time. Of couse, sometimes the best dive bars can turn out to be amazing, but this place just looks dead, particularly if you're showing up earlier. But a friend's band was playing, so we ventured in. Warm, welcoming, not too busy, tinsel and lights dangling from the ceiling, good drinks... The sound was OK, although the red light was a bit much (a photographer's bane), and we had a good time dancing during the show and hanging out after. I think I also tried watermelon beer here for the first time, in a can no less. Win. read more

In a world where businesses come and go everyday, Make-Out Room feels like one of the fewer SF institutions hanging on. It was probably one of the first bars I visited after moving to SF several years ago and going there now it still feels basically the same (which is a good thing!) My favorite part of the bar is just the overall feel and look. From the decorations hanging from the ceiling to the seating along the wall, to the small dj area on the stage, it's welcoming and uniquely its own. Speaking of the dj area, I also appreciate the many weekday happy hour sets playing indiepop, britpop, glam, 60s, etc. Weekdays are already the best time to go here as weekends are insanely crowded (plight of the Mission), but the awesome dj sets make it even more worth while. Archive Fever, Cool as F**k, and Rock and Roll Workshop are all worth checking out. As for the drinks, I'm a beer person, and while I wouldn't say the selection is out of this world, the variety is decent and there's usually a couple very drinkable choices available. The one major downside, though, is that they only do cash. I get that there are a variety of reasons why a bar might go this route (and this does seem to be a thing for some of the older places in SF), but I don't ever carry cash so I have to go out of my way to get some out before going to MOR. Would absolutely end up spending more if I wasn't capped by however much I took out of the cash machine. Nonetheless, glad that there are still places in SF like Make-out Room, and hope their doors will stay open for many years to come. read more

OK Make-Out Room - I see your charm now. I get it. If you catch the right band here on the right night - the Make-Out Room is quite endearing. My friend's two bands played here last week -and unlike past visits they filled up the space with epic sound. There wasn't a slew of people in the space - and I was away from the narrow entrance - so I was able to slide around on the dance floor without bothersome bar chatter. There was no line for the bathroom and there was a plethora of chairs to camp out on. The Make-Out room would never be a destination spot for me personally - but if I knew there would be some great music - and that the space wouldn't be too crowded - I would definitely cruise on over again - with my dance moves in tow. The Make-Out Room is one of the few original bars left in SF. And when I say original, I'm not only referring to the fact that it's been an anchor business in the neighborhood since the mid-90's, but also that it continues to host a range of local talent - authors, bands and DJs - that have been a part of the community for some time. And with the closing of other local watering holes like the Attic, Pop's and Jack's, it increasingly serves as somewhat of a refuge for otherwise displaced artists, writers and creative types that don't necessarily have the income or inclination to frequent some of the city's newer, pricier, and more boutique establishments aimed at a very different, and more recently transplanted, audience. That said, you can catch some of the city's best up-and-coming bands during one of their frequent happy hour shows, and some of the city's best DJs on choice weeknights. Not to be missed are the Tuesday night Slow Jams party with Primo and Lucky (San Francisco's best oldies DJs), the Thursday night Web of Sound party with Jackie Sugarlumps (San Francisco's best 60's garage DJ) and the Friday night 2000's party Last Nite (some of San Francisco's best indie DJs.) I've always wanted to come here, just for its name. But it's actually really pretty, too - with all the sparkly silver helium balloons, streamers, etc. hanging from the ceiling. Also, it has the right balance of hipster meets posh. I like. If you are looking for a douchey club or a posh lounge, this ain't it. It was, however, a really fun bar to visit after a dinner at Foreign Cinema. We were unfamiliar with the neighborhood and the name was intriguing. Well, I don't like paying cover, but it was only $5, and I fell in love with the kitschy decor - I especially liked the bejewelled deer heads on the wall and strange art in the back of the bar. The music was awesome - there was a DJ mashing up older dance songs and latin/reggaeton beats, which was perfect material for a dance party. OF course, with a name like this, expect some weirdos. Alas, there was no making out to be had for me, but I did meet a nice guy. There was a lot of making out and groping going on around the bar, so if you are a prude, this is probably not your joint either. Bonus - drinks were only $4. You really can't beat that. read more

Two starts seems a little harsh, on the surface... but "I've experienced better" really does encapsulate my experience here. I'd go back if someone else was making the plans but probably not on my own. We went on a Friday night, $10 cover... Not the best start to the evening but I could shake it off with my sweet dance moves! And the music was great, a mix of funk and latin-- definitely something anyone can get into! And anyone and everyone did just that-- the clientele was really mixed in terms of age, style, drug of choice... Which makes for fun people-watching and actually made the night really great! But what made the night so "meh" was the line for the bar and the quality of drinks! I ordered a Moscow Mule and got back a highball of vodka and water with a wedge of lime in it. It was so undrinkable, I was going to just put it down and say goodbye to my $8 + tip, but my fiance insisted on getting it remade, or getting something else entirely. He asked the bartender who made it what she could do, and she threw up her hands and walked away. The other bartender working asked what it was supposed to be, and when my fiance told him, he looked at him like he was crazy. He brought out a new kind of glass entirely, mixed my terrible drink with some more ginger ale and lime juice, and handed it back. Meh. I've experienced better customer service for sure. The place has a divey bar vibe and has a space in the middle to dance. Drinks were $7-12. Music: We came here looking for some Latin music. The DJ played mostly cumbia and one old merengue. He also played some salsa which I did not recognize. If you're looking for east coast Latin music, this is not the place for you, but I was happy to see what my Latinos in the west coast are into. I can't say many of the people there dance well but then again as long as you're having fun, who cares, right? I think when there is an event you def have to pay for tickets. My friend got me tickets ahead of time incase they sell out. The event was lively and even audience volunteered to share their One Night Stand stories. I really enjoyed their decorations. A fun disco ball hanging from a top shined on people in the room. Sparkly confetti was hanging everywhere too. It really did remind me of 90s dance house. As a kid thats how i used to decorate my room or house whenever you were having a sleepover and wanted to dance. It def brought out a fun inner child out of me. I liked the mellow vibe of this place. I'm not sure if it's because I went to see "Mortified" but the crowd that night was pretty relaxed. The music was decent too. I'd imagine this place would suck on a really crowded night, but on a less crowded one, it's a great place to just sit with some friends and have a drink. The DJ was pretty good too. I saw a few people getting their dance on. Then again, it was still early when I left. The door on the women's bathroom, however sucks. It nearly was going to fall off. I hope they get that fixed soon. According to my boyfriend, the interior reminds him of a really bad prom. After 3 years in SF, I think the MOR is in my top 3 favorite bars. There are a few reasons: - good entertainment - good location - good venue to play - good drinks - good bar staff Entertainment - I have seen Calexico here, good DJs, great random bands, etc. Though I haven't gone, I hear Mortified is pretty funny too. Location - not on a main avenue is a bonus in my book. Being across the street from Cafe Revolution and around the corner from my other favorite bar (Mission Bar), makes MOR prime real estate! Venue - my band has played here once, and luckily everything went swimmingly - we were asked to play again. The sound is good. The 2 level stage thing is fun and exciting. The red curtain background made me feel important. Music is heard from anywhere you are within the bar. Drinks - $5 PBR pitchers and overflowing glasses of whiskey?! C'mon! Make Out Room is a hidden gem in SF's nightlife scene. If you like dancing and people who still DJ with vinyl, this is the spot for you! They have great underground DJs every night of the week, but if you aren't sure when to go I would recommend going on a night when Chulita Vinyl Club plays (one Thursday / month) and that way you won't go wrong with the music selection. The atmosphere is very non-pretentious and so so so fun - there is even a disco ball! They play music you won't here at other clubs / bars and the decor is very unique. The drink prices are about the same as other places in the area ($6-10), and most nights they don't have a cover charge. Check this place out! read more

Shruggingly came here on Saturday with a group of friends after being sardined near the bathroom at Latin American for an hour and finally decided we'd had enough of people asking us if we were in line for the bathroom. After the $5 cover we walked in to a nice looking space with a restored bar, booths, and a large room in the back with people dancing below silver streamers and decorations hanging from all over the ceiling. The vibe was lively and everyone seemed to be having a good time. At one point I asked the bartender for a special drink on recommendation, and he whipped up a ginger vodka martini - pretty nice! His kindness and obvious happiness in his job was in stark contrast to the insane, grumpy grizzly tending the bar at Latin American. Even though the $5 cover at Make-Out Room was a little annoying, I was willing to pay it for some breathing room (although it was still pretty crowded). Saturday is their El SuperRitmo! night which claims to present, "the finest African music of Latin America. Cumbia, dancehall, reggaeton, salsa. soul, hip-hop, funk, rio baile funk, mambo, electro, descargas cubanas, disco, bhangra..." of which I only really heard the first three, plus a few of the Spanish-language versions of some disco classics. There was one hip-hop song and none of the rest. Also, since when did bhangra become African music of Latin America? Just asking. Decent night out. read more

People weren't kidding. It really is HOT in there. I was wearing a backless dress and I still felt it. My friend wasn't wearing anything bulky and she had to grab a napkin to pat away some sweat! My drink was actually more expensive than usual, despite the fact that the event description said there were special prices for the night. It was decently made, but not extraordinarily stiff to make up for it. The other thing I take serious issue with is the fact there's only ONE stall in the restroom, and barely any space to line up while you're waiting. The only positives to the place were the decor, abundance of seating, and decent size for use as a music venue. read more

I feel like at the end of the night, we're somehow always here or around this place. Things to know: Cash only bar, sometimes here is a $10 cover to get in on busy nights. Loud, small club/bar environment, you will not be having any deep conversations here. Think dance dive bar. Think grimy, dark, with dusty decorations hanging from the ceiling. Think cheap drinks. Think running into the owner as your arm is around some girl you've just met, shaking his hand and admiring his beard, as you compliment him on how dope his bar is. The spot feels like your typical mission dive bar, but with a stage and a little dance floor that was made by clearing out the chairs. Go for a band you follow, or if you like the mission hipster grunge scene then this place is for you for dam show. Cons: they packed this place pretty full, which was surprising because the cover was so much money! It was kind of an open mic deal going on...it was an authentic San Francisco experience, and that's what I set out to have. Hell, they were probably as shocked I was there as I was lol. But as in all situations, a good bar keep will always mellow it out for his customers if he's worth his salt, and Dave is definitely that. Went here for Slow Jams on a Tuesday night. Fantastic selection of music that you rarely hear out and about. Dance floor eventually got pretty fun. My two complaints are that: * The Slow Jam vibe started too late... I understand if the DJ doesn't want to start their set at the advertised time, but could the bartender get us in the mood with a playlist from the genre we came here for? * The bass was turned up so high it sounded pretty bad until I got enough whiskey in me not to care. I was expecting a weeknight Slow Jam night to be a little mellower, but the muddled sound system made it hard to converse and hard to appreciate the quality of the musical selections. The Make-Out Room is my favorite bar in San Francisco's Mission District. I guest DJ once in awhile for Festival '68, and the sound is good, the night well-attended, and the vibe is just great. This bar hosts other great music nights and happy hours too, such as Rock and Roll Workshop. Good music, friendly and knowledgable bartenders, and no cover charge make this spot a great choice any night of the week. I have only been here twice and they have both been on Saturday nights. Apparently those nights are Latin night which is my favorite so you know I was into it. There was no line to get in, even tho it was around 11pm. There is a charge of $10, cash only. The first time I came here it was totally spontaneous. My friends and I wanted a place to drink so we just went in. We had no idea it turned into a dancing space. I enjoyed it so much that 2 weekends later I was back with my friend and my guy. The age range varies, there were people who are probably in their 30s, late 20s. Both times I've came I believe my group and I have probably been the youngest ones there (we're in our early 20s) but that did not matter. To me it seems as if there's not a lot of dirty dancing here, like grinding. My friends and I were probably the ones that we're getting a little too wild, but honestly everyone enjoys it. We're all just trying to have a good time. The only thing that was kind of annoying was someone threw a beer can up in the air and it hit me on my head and spilled on the girl next to me. I'm the type to be very passive so I let it go, but if I would of been kind of tipsy I would of gone off on them. Even with that I'd still recommend it if you're in the mood to dance to some reggeaton, Cumbia and just Latin music with a mix of Hip Hop. read more
