Very awesome shop! A bunch of different things you can buy from a lot of different suppliers. Great atmosphere for browsing and they had a custom area where you could apply patches and embroidery onto items on site. I saw items for everyone with a lot of quirky and varying themes. A great attraction to visit in Vancouver is Granville Island because of the public market, the bakery, the restaurants and interesting local shops. One of my favourite places is the Make store. There are so many interesting things in this store to buy for yourself or as a gift. A few things this place carries are: -a Dr. Bonny Henry collection of reusable bag, t-shirts, and mugs -cutting boards that is also art from Canadian Maple Live Edge Boards -retro items such as Golden Girl mugs, Nasa t-shirts, CBC hats This place also does custom embroidery, garment printing, as well as engraving for anyone who has a creative idea and want it to come to life. I wanted to have custom t-shirts designed for a friend's retirement due. I thought I had another week before placing the order but I did not. I explained the situation to the team at Make Vancouver and they "jumped to the pump". Carefully reviewed and rechecked the custom printing and made recommendations. The shirts were ready in 4 days and looked amazing. Did a browse through the store after picking up the shirts and I can't remember having that much fun shopping in a long time. Must visit store! I'm replying here to Stacy's reply to my post on towel embroidery. Yes, I brought towels in on June 1st. That's seven days to pickup date, however, if you're not counting Saturday and Sunday (days which you are open, perhaps the embroidery is done offsite), then it's five days or actually 4.5 days as I requested to pickup by noon). You disputed the price, well with tax those four towels were $145.44 so that is what I paid and what I claimed. Yes, I was told they could be fixed, but not immediately; it would take days is what I was told and if Saturday and Sunday didn't count that would be the following week. It was never presented as it could be dealt with now. I know how long it took me just to pick off the backing so I doubt that I could have had them on the same day or even the next day. And if this 'imperfection' occurs sometimes, shouldn't your staff see it and fix it immediately? I suggested the staff take a photo of it and put a note in the font selection that this might occur at this size to prevent future unhappiness. It was like pulling teeth to get the clerk to finally get her own phone to take the photo. I'm sorry that the part of the initial with the defect didn't show up in the yelp photo, as it was somehow cropped out; it was in the D, the last letter. And yes, someone did call, but it was too late. You've got to prevent these errors from happening (best practice), or fix them before they go out (a bit more costly to fix them, but better than dissatisfied customers). read more

There seems to be a Canadian snarky theme. :) Sales people on the floor were a bit pushy; same lady asked me five times in the space of 10 minutes how I was doing. One of the first stores we went to on Granville Island was this one. It looked funky from the outside so we wanted to check it out. It's a store that has lots of cool items that you might find online but it's the coolness and novelty of buying it on the spot, that you don't mind paying more in store for. There's a selection of bacon items for that fan who needs bacon candy, soap, balm, and bandages! I saw a cool PacMan ghost lamp that changes colour, loved it. They have candy tins for fans of Star Wars, PacMan, and more. In the back there's clothing including t-shirts and sweatshirts. I would come here for an unique gift including houseware items. What a gem of a store! (I admit I'm a sucker for funky gift shops and stores that cater to one's creativity). For you Seattle-ites out there, this store is like a hybrid of Fireworks and Archie McPhee, with a custom printing shop thrown in for good measure. So you can imagine the store: fun (some twisted) books and cards, funny graphics and sayings (some twisted) on t-shirts and satchels, purses made from rubber tires and seatbelts, pet-oriented stuff, bacon-oriented stuff, etc. etc. etc. There is an elongated, central table for kids of all ages to draw and doodle, and a screen printing area where one can design one's own creations which can then be printed or embroidered on all sorts of apparel or fabric accessories or buttons, or laser engraved on leather or wood or glass items. Really, the sky is the limit. I like how their literature says: "Anyone can be an artist!". So true! The store is deep and one could explore for a good hour. At least, I could have. My family, too. I submitted an image with request for a quote for a very small job of just three t-shirts. The image concerned the scientifically documented risks re. a health issue. They replied they would not consider doing the job because the info went counter to official advice. (There was no hate speech, violence, derogatory terms whatsoever) I was stunned by their opposition to expressing a critical view and wrote a long letter of complaint including a few of many references to censored science and my disappointment at them acquiescing to the gospel of (corrupt, controlled) "authorities". I'd never known this stretch at Granville Island to have anything of interest to me except Ecomarine, so when I tripped upon Make, I felt like I was entering the "wardrobe" in a CS Lewis book. This place is huge, active, and not just a store of stuff to buy, but kind of also interactive (and certainly fun). There is a large selection of well curated hand made gifts but also some just awesome art, and all sorts of stations to do custom t-shirts or other projects within. I'm not really sure what the extent is of all the things you can do there, but I'm hooked and will be back to explore it more. To me this looks like a great place to find an original gift. I also didn't think the prices were bad considering it does have a bit of that hipster "everything in here is precious" vibe,.. this is just less pretentious and the stuff is better. read more

This is such a neat little store. Offering a variety of unique items that you can customize to your own liking. While it is a little pricey it gives customers the opportunity to find, make or create the perfect the gift for that special someone (or maybe themselves)! They will even ship out for out if towners if you decide to email them something at a later date which is great if you're in holidays and don't want to take the time to actually make your creation right then and there. My son loves cats and they had lots of boy appropriate cat merchandise for him which I appreciated! And my daughters into tacos so we found a taco shirt for her! Odd but true! I was looking for a high quality but affordable notebook on which to do engraving for a company gift. We found it at Make - they were easy to work with and were always available to speak with over the phone. The team was up to date on my request. They sent me another confirmation before printing to double check it was what I wanted. We bought the Castelli notebooks, which is comparable in quality to Moleskine. I found other prices for similar notebooks online for almost double the cost. Make was an easy choice. They even let me pick it up from their store to save on shipping and stayed open for a few extra minutes since I was a bit late in picking it up. read more

I'd never have stepped foot in here if I weren't on a hunt for the perfect wedding gift for some very dear friends. Not that there's anything *wrong* with Make, it just never really appealed to me for any reason. Besides, I think I had it in my head that Make was still Justin Stiches (a terrible, just awful, name. Thank gad they decided to move on from that mistake). That said, Make still suffers from a bit of an identity crises. This is great for schizophrenic gift-givers, but not so much for those seeking a curated gift shopping experience. Carrying everything from beautiful leather-bound notebooks, to tacky seatbelt purses (yes, those), to out of place pseudo-athletic wear that comes in the form of dresses (you know, those ones that women wear with socks and big rubber hiking sandals), to the largest selection of Pendleton blankets in Vancouver (at $255 a pop), this massive store *should* be where one (me, specifically) would find the perfect gift... but alas, I did not. Also, Make is still a place to "make" things, apparently. Have your blanket embroidered, or shirt printed on, or that special wooden block engraved -- this, I think, is where the "Make"ers really shine. I needed custom embroidery in a small quantity (just 1) and none of the places I called up did single orders. Until I called Justin Stitches (which is what "Make" used to be called). They were friendly, fast, and I even saw a familiar face working there. I don't remember the price, but it was done within a half hour (since another order was already on the small-sized embroidery machine). The store seemed well-stocked with a variety of items to create and customize. I should go back and look around more thoroughly. read more

Came to Granville Island on a quick trip up to Vancouver period while exploring the area I slipped into Make. Very cute touristy / kitschy store with a variety of goods. Definitely a place but you can find some fun souvenirs to take back to friends and family. I greatly enjoyed interacting with the staff at the store. It was Halloween so they were all dressed up which was super fun. And they were also willing to give me excellent recommendations of restaurants for me to try and Halloween parties for me to go to while I was in town. Nothing like good customer service! read more

This is one of the coolest stores on Granville Island, and Granville Island is chock full of kitschy - cool places. This store is Front & Company meets Paper -Ya meets an arts and crafts class. It houses a wide array of wacky, zany and cutesy novelty items as well as several household items you can personalize or engrave. They even have a table in the middle for kids and families to create their own buttons. I saw things like Bacon gum, chopsticks that look like drum sticks, funky iphone cases, you name it, they seem to have it. I have a bizarre obsession for things that don't look like what they are, so naturally I ended up buying a couple of pens -- one that looked like a wooden pencil and another that looked like a tube of paint. It's such a rad place, I totally recommend checking it out. read more

If you like incredible customer service and unique gift ideas, this is the place for you! I bought an Adrian Kils purse from here several years ago and they still remember that! I come in on any random day and I get greeted with a warm smile and 'how is the purse these days?' Or something like that. It reminds me of the service you would get in smaller towns. They have wonderful T-shirts there too. Perfect shirts if you're a proud Vancouverite or want to commemorate your trip to this fine city with something unique. Justin Stitches has now been renamed: Make at Granville Island Although i've been to granville island a million times before, had never stopped in the store as i never really get a chance to walk around all the shops. I'm usually just in the food court, public market, kids market, playground, etc (guess you can figure i'm a parent). I've browsed through some of the shops here and there, but had never really browsed in the area where Make is situated. Their main thing is customizable t-shirts, etc and they've got lots of nicknacks and cool things. Laughed at some of the T-shirts they had. for those with kids who are looking for something different, they offer birthday parties...i guess you could do this for a bunch of adults too. For about $18/person before taxes (min 8 people) participants make a customized t-shirt and button. You're only allowed to bring cake and drinks as they are a retail store after all and don't want merchandise to be ruined. Might try this for daughter's birthday. I can't believe this store has only 18 reviews on yelp! We visited the store when we were on vacation. We didn't want to visit Granville Island on a weekend but didn't have much choice due to our schedule. What a great place to stop in and browse. They have unique items and fun t-shirts. My husband and I ended up buying a t-shirt each. And a brilliant parent who works there thought of the idea to have a drawing table for the kids while you browse. My son loved coloring while we took turns watching him and shopping. Later I decided I liked my shirt some much I wanted another one. So I checked the website and ordered two more. One is a custom print, and the folks were very thorough with the follow up on the specifications of my order. Great customer service and so nice to talk to humans instead of computers once in a while. I should get my shirts next week and I can't wait! I'm a big fan of Make. I like to create, or at least part create, gifts for friends and family, and you can have a lot of your gift ideas realized here. Think Vista Print but far more imaginative, artistic, and without the strict guidelines. I've had clothing, pin-butons, and embroidery pieces made there, and all came out great (especially the embroidery). The store itself is just great fun to be in - it's bustling with busy people creating items in their departments. It's like a Vancouver Santa's workshop! The only note of caution is the cost - It can get very pricey, but saying that you save on the shipping of doing these things online, or the exchange rate of having them done in the US. read more

This is probably one of the coolest places I have ever been. It sells quirky, cute, colorful, funky, and artful products that you may have seen other places or online, but put all together it's like a toystore for adults (and not in the naughty way! Haha). It also sells crafts from local artists which shows they're aware and supportive of artisans and craftspeople rather than only mass produced stuff. Lots of pop culture in this place too. I have been using them for years as they have a a quick turnaround. Unfortunately half the jobs come out incorrectly and they take zero ownership of their mistakes. Every time I visit the Island, I have to make a dedicated visit to Make! It's got a great assortment of random knick knacks and gifts that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere.
