My housemate and I both have fibromyalgia. I also have neck vertebrae and head damage from childhood abuse that causes constant pain & migraines and my housemate has back damage. Matt is pretty darn awesome. A little about the location/office: It's out on Mass Ave past Porter. It's accessible by bus and is right near the bike path. There is plenty of metered parking out in front. The office isn't the most extravagant place but Matt has definitely created a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Appointments can be made through an online system, which is really convenient. Prices are about on par for other massage therapists in the area. I came to him after purchasing an Amazon Local deals for two 60 minute massages. There was a lag between my two appointments - approximately six months - but Matt remembered me, which shows how much he pays attention to each of his clients. The first appointment focused on my upper body whereas the second was a full body massage and both were excellent. He's obviously good at what he does but what really sold me was his willingness to spend a few extra minutes after my massage to explain different muscles that were sore, why, and how to prevent it in the future. I never felt rushed, and never felt pressured to make another appointment (although I did anyway!). Go to Matt! He's great! But plan in advance, because he does book up pretty quickly. read more

Disclaimer: I've known Matt for years and consider him a friend. I was initially a little concerned about having someone who knows me work on me physically, but Matt keeps things professional, while still creating and maintaining a bond of trust and connection with his clients. I suffer from both kyphosis & scoliosis, and Matt has done wonders for my alignment, and for alleviating pain - though I must admit, weight training has probably been a big part of that. Matt is not your average massage therapist. I have Matt do some bodywork on me just about every time I'm in Austin and he has worked miracles for me. I've been doing yoga for 25 years and recently I developed pain in my elbows that we significantly impacting my practice. Among the great tragedies of my life is Major Massage moving from Cambridge to Texas. My shoulders miss him, my back misses him, and also there's that magical thing he does to my forearm that erases my computer job from my arms! Matt's been my good friend for a long time now, so know that I'm not just saying he's an excellent massage therapist, simply because I count him as a friend. No, he's just a very skilled, very intuitive, compassionate, and gifted massage therapist. I'm a weightlifter, and I tend to do punishing stuff to my body. I've gotten massages at quite a few of the local places - Hands on Health, Massage Therapy Works, Healthworks - and I think Matt's one of the best around. He communicates very well and manages to be both gentle and effective at working out problem areas (I work in a lab and do a lot of repetitive movements, so I usually have some pretty crazy knots in my upper back and neck). In the past when I've had deep tissue massage, I've often felt uncomfortable with the pressure, even to the point of pain. This is my second review ever on Yelp. And in this instance, although it's a somewhat belated review (I saw Matt in November 2013) I continue to remember how good the massage was. But it's more than that -- he took the care to REALLY talk through with me what was going on with my lower back, and was patient as I vented about my frustrations with the ongoing pain. He then really focused on finding the trouble area, and worked on it diligently. It wasn't cured overnight, but ever since that session with Matt I have been on a positive trajectory and am feeling better and better. I don't live in Cambridge, so when I returned to DC I was able to tell the massage therapist in DC the trouble areas that Matt had identified, and continue with the healing. I've had massages with many different massage therapists but there are many fantastic qualities to Matt's care that make him stand out: his massages are gentle but extremely effective, he's great at communicating and always makes me feel comfortable and at ease. I used to think that for a massage to be effective it had to be very intense; I have found that this isn't so. Matt's techniques always relax me and give me great relief. I've gone to him for a variety of complaints - shoulder/upper back pain, low back/butt/sacral pain, hip tightness, sciatica - and he's effectively relieved all of them. My back was destroyed when I came to Matt. I had so many knots in my back that I was unable to exercise or sleep. Matt was professional, thorough, and kind in his assessment and treatment of my problem. Looking to my comfort, he adjusted the room temperature and how the massage took place to suit my needs. He identified problem areas, used several tools of massage to correct them, and in three massage sessions rid me of the problem completely. I too purchased a couple of massages through the Buy with Me promotion. I got 2 of the 90 min. Thai Yoga Massages. It was AWESOME. It's the first Thai Yoga massage I've had so I don't have much to compare it to but I do know that it felt great. I practice yoga on a very regular basis and one of my favorite things in class is being adjusted by the teacher. This felt like something in between a traditional massage and a partners yoga class. (For this type of massage you are fully clothed) He used his hands, feet, knees, forearms and elbows. It is truly an amazing sensory experience. I have had two of this type of massage so far with Matt and both were great. His office was a bit cold the first time and since you aren't under a blanket like a traditional massage I'd recommend long sleeves if you run cold like I do. I have already scheduled my next appt. and hope to continue to see him on whatever regular basis I can afford. (His sliding scale helps). Also, do be careful of the step up in the entry door to the building. I wasn't lucky enough to have caught myself like the previous reviewer and completely busted my butt. read more
