We stopped in as a part of a food tour with Alsaciette Food tour to learn about the cheese making process and taste some fresh cheese. An English speaking host walked us through the process for making Munster cheese from start to finish (around 20 minutes). Following his presentation we sat down and tasted about 8 cheeses from the mornings soft curds with spices, to various flavored cheeses to a dessert cheese with sugar and cherry brandy. I could have spent the day buying cheese here :-)) They have an amazing array of goats chess and lots of hard and soft cheeses including my all time favourite Brie avec Truffle :-))) it's almost all artisanal cheese and French is the only language here. Brushing up on my vocabulary was essential to shop and taste here ;-)) Service is very friendly and prices are not too bad. He buys young top quality cheese, about 150 artisanal produced kinds from raw milk, mainly from France. He stores them in his vast cellars until their perfect maturity. Only then he sells them in the shop or in a small restaurant, called Sundgauaer Kaes-Kaller. I once rented a bus and went with 25 people there to enjoy his special cheese menu "Cérémonie de Fromage", a six course meal, with a variety of cheese on each plate (totalling over 22 cheese varieties you will be able to taste), and served with the wines perfectly matching. Be warned, his menu consists almost only of cheese. You'll get bread and potatoes, but don't expect a traditional mix with other items like meat or salad. It's all about Cheese. He joins the guests and talks either about the products (both wine or cheese) or about one of his many adventures. He usually delivers cheese to the presidential inauguration in Matignon (Paris), the White House, many Five Star Chefs, Châteaux and numerous high profile families from politics or society. His fame goes around the globe, photos on the wall are there to prove it. I speak French with him but really love to hear him talk Alsässer Diitsch... Useless to say if you are not into cheese, there is nothing more there... but if you are, it is the place to find mature cheese of the highest quality. To me, living in Switzerland, the prices are modest, particularly when I consider the TOP quality of the products. Maître Anthony is a very friendly old chap, and luckily for us his son Jean François has decided to follow his father. We only can hope he becomes as professional as his father! As it was, the experience was slow and unpolished, to the point of needing to ask for the check before some of the order arrived since so much time had elapsed it was simply pointless to wait further. No real explanation, comp or apology was offered, just blasé indifference. The food itself was fine but nothing special. Not recommended.
