If you were to only make one stop on the Cheese Route, be sure it is at Margot Kempf (No. 47 or so on the Cheese Route). Follow the road signs to a dirt road and park by the side of the road and walk or drive all the way to the cheese-making operation. You'll know you're there when you get herded by Border Collies. There, Margot and Jean Martin's gracious son gave us - in excellent English - a tour, a tasting and an introduction to their cheeses.
Get their Munster cheese and eat it while in Alsace. Their mountain cheese (Tomme), which is the size of a coffee cup, is fantastic and can travel unrefrigerated as long as it is kept below 77F/25C - not a hard feat. Bring some or a lot back home and enjoy or gift to friends
