You can also choose how your coffee is brewed. The staff is always friendly and very knowledgeable. I discovered this spot a few years ago through a barista passport, where you pay for this little booklet that has over 100 participating cafes in Montreal and you get to discover them by getting a "free" coffee (although not really free since you paid for the booklet). I was pretty intimidated the first time I walked in since there were just so many options - from all the different coffees to the different brewing styles. The staff is super approachable and always eager to help and give suggestions. They usually let you smell the coffee if you're undecided. I always leave having learned something new.

They have a dedicated area for Canadian coffee and it's labelled from which city it's from. They have all kinds of tools, machines and coffee makers available at your disposal. I walked around to see what they were specific to. There's beautiful posters and paintings decorated. Unfortunately they have 2 very very small tables in such a spacious cafe. You can sit on the high chairs at the register. However, it would be nice if they incorporated more sitting space available. The barista explained the different coffees available and why they are different. Upon his recommendation I ordered the chocolate pour-over. It was excellent! Very strong coffee, to the point I was up way past midnight! I added milk, no sugar and it was perfect. I tried my friends fruit coffee pour over and I didn't like it, nor did they. I finished my fairly large mug, whereas they couldn't. It was nice to watch the process of the coffee being made. Really enjoyed it. Again, not enough chairs to sit and enjoy the coffee which is primarily why it loses a star.

Sometimes live music, but if not live the music is on point. They've played Sigur Ros, Jeff Buckley, Radiohead, Jazz (assorted artists), and many other amazing choices. Coffee could be better, but honestly all of Montréal's coffee is pretty bad so I won't let that detract from this place.

You order inside at the café and they bring your order to your table. You can take a container of utensils, napkins and a jug of water with you. We ordered the blueberry turnover and blueberry chocolate croissant with coffees to start. Coffee was great and the pastries were excellent. The blueberry turnover was flaky and the croissant had a generous portion of filling! As main dishes we ordered the melon soup, the zucchini salad, the porchetta sandwich, the BLT toast off the lunch menu. The highlight dish for me was the zucchini salad. It was dressed in this aioli type of vinagrette and the dollops of ricotta make the Zucchini so silky and delicious. It was just the perfect dish for lunch on the terrasse un the sun! The porchetta sandwich was my second favorite, it was buttery, herby and the chunks of porchetta were well seasoned. Desserts were awesome! The ice cream sandwich is a must order! The chocolate chiffon cake was very good but it's simple. All the dishes have many layers to them and I thought the chiffon cake would too. Fantastic lunch at cafe Hélico! just like Helicoptère, it is absolutely worth the trip to Hochelega!

We were greeted right away by friendly staff. When I asked for recommendations, Marie took me on a visual and descriptive tour highlighting some of their specialty products. I went for the seasonal maple roll dusted with icing sugar, topped with white chocolate chips and a maple crust. Also took a slice of pear almond tart. They were both $4.50 each. The maple roll was densely packed and so much more than a snack. It's really bready so you could have it for breakfast. Slightly sweet and covered in a light glaze. The tart was light tasting and the pastry was full of buttery goodness. Texture is a little bit interesting because it's a cold tart, the juice from the pears soak into the almond paste and make it a little bit cold and slightly mushy. Some people might not like that but I found it ok. Service is friendly and attentive. Pastries are good but a bit expensive.
