He is authentically old school--follows through, responds to customers' needs, and puts a bit of himself in every project. On our project, that included coming out in an unexpected and ice cold downpour to dig a ditch for drainage within a half hour of calling him. He came by almost daily to check on the work and once had the crew take down a days work and start over--not because it was wrong. Just because it could be even better. Seriously, who does that?! It also meant working covertly with a family member to find the perfect craftsman style front door as my Christmas gift and scheduling around me so it would be a surprise. He even came up with a door handle that a previous client had custom ordered and then decided against--just because he thought it would look really nice. Not sure which was better, the absolutely perfect surprise handle or the pride on his face when I said how much I love it. His crew are talented and hard working. They take pride in their work and it shows. I can't thank them enough. Want skilled craftsmen who understand service and what your home means to you? Want honesty and integrity? A fair price and service after the project? Call Quinn.

Hometown Home Improvement - What a neat nailing job on the trim board. Notice the absurd gap between boards.

Hometown Home Improvement review Too bad zero stars isn't an…read moreoption. You know a contractor isn't good when he constantly threatens to sue those who complain about his work. Hometown Home Improvement is one guy, Robert Runnells. His Hometown Home Improvement website says that his business is a "certified" vinyl siding installer, endorsed by the Vinyl Siding Institute. However, the Vinyl Siding Institute does not certify businesses. It certifies individuals. As of this writing, Runnells is not certified. Nor should he be, because the work he oversaw at Bradford Commons in Bangor, Maine, was among the worst work you will ever see. All one has to do is read the installation instructions to know how to install vinyl siding. The basic rules are these: (1) Center fasteners in the middle of their slots in the nailing hem and don't put the fasteners in too tight. This is to allow siding panels and corner posts to expand and contract with changes in the temperature; (2) Fasten panels into studs; (3) Cap corner posts by folding the two sides on the end inward; (4) Overlap panels away from doorways and well-traveled corners of the building to conceal seams. And above all: Do not drive nails through the siding to hold it in place. Hometown Home Improvement did none of these things consistently. The result has been predictable: swollen, bubbling, rippling, and cracking siding panels that give an overall cheap-looking appearance, and nails used to hold improperly installed panels in place. The contractor also failed to install trim boards properly. Does it really take five nails in one spot to fasten a trim board? Of course not. Fasteners are supposed to go into structural members. Hometown Home Improvement failed to do this. The boards are supposed to be cut to ensure a snug fit and then glued. Hometown Home Improvement failed to do this as well. The contractor's installation of exterior insulation looked worse than what a third-grader could do. Whole panels are supposed to be used whenever possible to reduce the number of seams in which water can enter. Hometown Home Improvement used scraps. It used the wrong tape and took no care at all in applying it, allowing creases and sometimes actually failing to tape seams entirely. Runnells actually called the police on a tenant for recording video of his workers installing wet insulation in the rain and complained that the tenant had filed complaints about the work and safety violations. The police, of course, did nothing.

I found Bob from Hometown Home Improvement at the home show in Portland. He is very personable and…read moreknowledgeable about his products. I contracted him to replace all of the windows and siding on my house. My first contact with him was in the spring. I signed the contract on May 1 with the contract to begin on July 6, with the understanding the work would be done in "less than 3 weeks, start to finish". The work was not even started until July 17, and now, on September 29, nearly 3 MONTHS after it was to begin, it is still not finished. The owner has no "employees", only people he hires as subs. It is very hard for him to produce a full crew to do work. His time management skills are not what I would expect from a business owner. At this point, despite my having given him his final check, the work is unfinished and he is not returning calls. Buyer Beware, and whatever you do, DO NOT PAY HIM IN FULL if every single thing is not done to your satisfaction.
