Very disappointed with Maine Optometry's cancellation policy. I was unexpectedly held over at the fire department and unable to make my appointment. I called the office, explained exactly what had happened, and communicated the circumstances rather than simply not showing up. Despite that, I was still charged a $45 fee. I understand why practices charge cancellation and no-show fees, and I respect that their time is valuable. However, there should be reasonable discretion when someone communicates a legitimate circumstance outside of their control. First responders, military personnel, healthcare workers, and others in similar professions don't always have the ability to leave work at a scheduled time. Emergencies and mandatory holdovers happen. Penalizing someone who proactively calls and explains that they are being held at the fire department feels unnecessarily rigid. The $45 isn't the issue. It's the lack of understanding or flexibility. There is a difference between irresponsibly missing an appointment and being unable to leave an emergency services assignment. Unfortunately, Maine Optometry's policy apparently makes no distinction. read more
