This place is AWFUL. I PAID 292.00 just for a glasses prescription exam. Do not go here. I was told the exam was 200.00. I was told my insurance was in network and in the past it has ALWAYS paid for a portion of my eye exams. I was seen last March, it's now November and I just got my first bill for that visit??? Plus, she was VERY UNTHOROUGH and the glasses I ordered based on her prescriptions don't even work. There's a reason this place can get you in quickly. No one wants to go there. This place is a total scam. First of all, they have screwed up my glasses on several occasions. The lenses were too big, and my frames were bent, and I've had to bring them back numerous times. Totally unacceptable. Secondly, they try to push progressive lenses. Buyer beware: THEY WILL NOT REFUND YOU. They tell you they will work with you which really means you will have to still pay for the progressive lenses even if you change the prescription. Shame on you. You guys are a total scam. I'll start off first by saying that the staff is friendly. My exam went very smoothly, the technician and Optometrist were nice and explained things to me well. The Optician was also friendly during the glasses selection process. The issue lies with their fees and their lack of understanding of my insurances. I have BC/BS insurance that covers my eye exam 100%, without a co-pay. I also have VSP, which covers $185.00 for the frames and 100% of my single vision lenses. I was then charged $194.00 for copay and lenses. The pricing didn't make sense to me, so I went and spoke with my HR manager and called my insurance companies. After obtaining clarification, I called and explained everything to Maine Optometry. They refunded my co-pay for the exam immediately, then transferred me to another person to discuss the glasses. That lady proceeded to tell me that I was being charged $159 for the lenses because I was getting lenses that were polycarbonate, had anti glare, blue light and anti scratch. If I were getting just, "basic lenses" that I would be covered, but those other items are above and beyond. I initially had asked for basic lenses because I only wear them when I am driving at night, no need for anything fancy. I went back in, got a complete refund minus a $20.00 fee for Optos, which the lady said to me was mandatory for exams. Even though on their website it says the following, "The optomap retinal exam assesses the health of your retina. This OPTIONAL test gives the doctor the most complete view of the back of the eye enabling early problem detection without the discomforts of pupil dilation." So, just keep in mind that the buyer/patient needs to watch over everything closely and that if you don't self advocate, you will be racked over the coals with additional fees. I didn't request Optos scans of my eyes, I didn't ask for all the extras for my glasses, they just assumed that it would be okay to spend my money frivolously. I will not return here and strongly recommend that you look elsewhere as well. read more

Apparently a confirmed appointment is not a confirmed appointment. After taking a day off for an appointment at an already inconvenient time, the check is person could not find my appointment. Finally someone helped him and they determined that because the initial appointment was for 20 minutes instead of the 30 minutes they wanted, they cancelled the appointment. They failed to notify me of this. As a computer person I know 100% they did not call, did not text, and did not email any changes to my confirmed appointment. I was informed by the front desk person the next available appointment is two months away, so Maine Optometry mis-scheduled my initial appointment and then failed to reschedule me. If they can't figure out how to schedule a patient, how can I expect them to perform professional and accurate eye examinations? Also, they were not very pleased that I expected an expedited appointment (not waiting for two months for an appointment that they changed, not me). read more

I have been a patient of Maine Optometry for a number of years and have continued to see their service decline as their costs continue to skyrocket. I have to say that they are fleecing their customers. They always seem to recommend additional evaluations which in my opinion aren't necessary and are upselling the service in order to charge the insurer. Also the associate optometry department is a ripoff. They significantly mark up their products to also take advantage of insurers. I bought a pair of progressive lenses and eyeglasses which would've cost $800+ without insurance (for flimsy plastic frames and plastic progressive lenses). They upsell you on useless coatings on the lenses. When it was all said and done, the messed up my order and gave me glasses whose frame was too large (wide). They said to keep them and they would tell me when my new glasses with the correct measurements came in. Ok...if that doesn't tell you how much they mark the stuff up what does....who would say just keep an $800 pair of glasses and we'll just give you another pair? So I called a few years later for replacement lenses, because the coatings wear off and look like scratches ....they wanted another $800+ just for replacement lenses......sorry...no thanks. I'll just order new glasses and lenses for $200 on line with the same quality and better service. read more

In this, standouts for me are Dr Shum, Beth and Cheryl. They were pleasant, responsive and knowledgeable. They understood my need for glasses to be high quality AND affordable. I've been a patient of main optometry for over 20 years and when I went to see them for an eye infection I was 11 minutes late for my appointment and they would not see me. There was no one else in the waiting room and the person working the front desk said it was just their policy. This isn't forgetting lenses checked or picking up a pair of glasses. This is for an eye infection I've had going for weeks. I'm very very disappointed at this and will be moving my eyeglass and contact lens needs and those in my family elsewhere. For a policy they've just lost four patients who have been there clients for years. I understand needing a one-size-fits-all policy to deal with business needs but this seems excessive. read more

Complete scam - talk about a bait and switch. Was told I should book another appointment for further testing and it would be covered by insurance. Was told at least 2x there would be no out of pocket cost. Received a bill for $85.00 - yes $85.00 saying this was a co-pay. This place is unethical and has terrible customer service. read more

I've had a great experience every time I've been in! Staff are friendly and the medical team is extremely knowledgeable and accommodating.

I wanted to get a eye exam and they could see me right away which was advantageous. My medicare should have covered but I ended up with a $20 copay and I was OK with that but the dr said he thought I should have afurthur exam for Glaucoma because my L optic nerve was slightly larger than my R and I have some history etc. In my family and my eye pressure had been elevated previously. so a later appt was made and I came back in and took some tests and that`s where things got weird and wonky. AFTER I took some tests to determine my ability to see peripheral objects in a green light box I was asked to sign a form to be dilated for furthur testing and I did. Big mistake, dr came in and told me I was not in bad shape at all and my Glaucoma wasn`t too far advanced and no furthur testing was needed and basically I should just be checked once a yr to make sure there was no advancement . Great! I went out to check out and was told no problem they`d submit to insurance. That night I check my banking and I have a $274. 86 debit for "health" NOTHING was submitted to anyone. They just charged me that for the dilation which was for ... NOTHING WHATSOEVER. BEWARE. I looked here afterwards and a couple other places for reviews and this is their grift; again BEWARE do not sign for dilation it`s a scam. read more

The medical portion of my experience was fine. I had some issues with the billing process, but they were eventually resolved. Some advice I would give is to make it clear if you are scheduling a routine annual exam and not scheduling for a specific medical issue, and if you are asked to return for a continuing examination ask if there will be any cost not covered by your insurance. read more

I've had great experiences at the Freeport location (formerly the Yarmouth location AND Freeport office which combined a few years ago). The staff has always been friendly, and the doctors I've worked with have all been great. I would NEVER buy glasses there because I'm the child of frugal parents who always took me to discount eyewear shops and found good deals. Worst customer experience I've had in years, 1 star is generous. I had to schedule an appointment that took a couple of weeks. I showed up late (8 mins) they said "sorry too late" (she seemed to almost get physical pleasure as she said it) had to reschedule (I get that, btw...I was late. I own a small business, I would have found a way to make it happen, but I was late) so a couple of weeks later at my rescheduled appointment I get serviced almost 30 minutes after my scheduled appointment. After I purchase over $1200.00 worth of new glasses which I paid right then. I waited to hear back when my new glasses were in. When I come back to pick them up she says "these glasses are going to be difficult to walk down stairs with, because of the way you ordered them" .. she never mentioned that more expensive lens design she sold me had this deficiency... she was right, glasses were horrible for anything you were doing on your feet. I never really used them. I'm guessing a handsome commission to the lady who sold me tho. The kicker is I start getting a collection company after me about 6 mos later for a $129 bill from them. Never anything from them prior, seems it went straight to collections. It is my only credit blemish, I've called the numerous times for an explanation... crickets. I'm furious. Seems like they figure I'll just pay. With a decent explanation I would. I'm left to buy new glasses to replace the junk they sold me.... if the next closest Optometry store we're in Connecticut, I'd drive there in order not to do business with them. Maine Optometry is not transparent about their pricing. For example, I went in for a routine eye exam, during which they took images of my eyes. At no point did anyone, including the doctor, say those images weren't part of a routine exam. It wasn't until checkout that they told me I owed them much more than my co-pay. Later, when I received another bill in the mail, I called and left multiple messages with their billing office because I didn't understand why I was being charged for more things related to the visit. Had an ok experience. I'm half black and because of this, it's more challenging to find glasses that fit correctly. I'm not an optometrist so I don't know everything that goes into making glasses fit and choosing the correct frames to fit different shaped faces etc, and it seems as though people that helped me didn't know either. Now I am stuck with glasses that wear comfortable just long enough for me to buy them, but are VERY VERY uncomfortable during everyday wear. I've given up on having them adjusted because they don't seem to know anymore than I do about how they fit. On the upside everyone was friendly and my eye exam went fine. read more

I'm a little confused about why I was given a Contact Lens Evaluation when I was never asked nor did I say I wanted one. I decided not to fight it since I didn't realize until after I paid, but I really would have rather NOT spent the extra $80 especially after i TOLD them I was tight on the funds and had to buy Glasses that day.... Thanks......... At least the doctor seemed pretty nice, and the folks at the desk were helpful. Just make sure you know what you are paying for and you are clear from the get go... double check EVERYTHING..... UPDATE--- I had edited this review before, saying I would come back to it after I went back for my glaucoma check. Ended up going to a different doctor, and good thing I did. This new doctor found that my glasses were the wrong prescription, but not due to being made wrong... Maine Optometrists somehow missed that I have astigmatisms and didn't take that into account for my glasses. Thankfully my new doctor caught it... sadly I now have had my glasses from Midcoast Optometry for a month and I'm sure I would not be able to get my money back or have them redo them by now. Oh well. I suppose these can last until next year. I would HIGHLY recommend finding a different doctor. I wish I had sooner. I would have saved myself a lot of money. read more

My experience with Maine Optometry in Brunswick so far has been excruciating. I don't have the energy to explain my office visit right now, but I was told when I left that sample contact lenses for me to try would arrive at their office in a couple weeks and that they would call me when they came in. They didn't, so two months later I called them, and was directed to their "contacts department" where I left a voicemail stating the above. Two weeks later, I have not been called back. Today I received a $110 bill in the mail for contact lenses I have never received and did not order. read more

Stay away if you can!!! This place is about money and care very little about the patient. The two times my husband and I went there for eye exams they charged us things already covered by the insurance. The second time my husband went there I complained and they reimbursed us. They prescribed the wrong glasses for me last year. I started having headaches with my glasses, went there again and they realized they prescribed 4.5 for my myopia when it should have been 4. My final (I am done with them!) issue was when went there to purchase a couple of contact boxes last week. I will be out of town for the entire year and needed to buy a couple of boxes to allow me time to find a new doctor in my new area. They said that they could only sell me just one single box because it was getting close to my next exam and they would only give me more after I had the exam with them. However, they said that if I paid for a new exam (out of insurance cover) I could buy more boxes of contacts. I had to say ok to purchasing one single box . I asked them for my medical records and they said they would only release them with the contacts payment. As the contacts had not arrived I decided to "pay" for my medical records only when the contacts arrived. Today they called me telling me the lenses will not arrive on time for me to pick up. I asked an estimation of time and they told me they had no idea when the lenses would arrive. I complained about the whole mess and the contact lenses lady told me in an aggressive tone that I was welcome to pick up my medical records and hung up on me. I never felt so disrespected in a health care provider situationin my entire life! read more

The receptionists are always in a foul mood and three times they neglected to either sign me up for a new appointment or set up a referral for further work. The offered to sell me contacts but didn't pressure me when I said I could probably get them cheaper elsewhere (like online, she was totally nice about it). Office was nice/clean/modern. Worst eye doctor around. They got my prescription wrong multiple times and basically told me it was my fault and that I was doing something to mess up the eye test. I asked for a refund when I got my glasses back again with the wrong prescription and they refused and said they would keep fixing it. I have no idea how hard it is to get a prescription right but I don't think it should take multiple visits! I tried to talk to the owner to complain about their incompetent staff, but when I looked it up I saw that the doctor I had was the owner. I have nothing but bad things to say about this place and always tell people never to go there. To this day my glasses still aren't the right prescription but I refuse to ever go back there. This is the worst eye doctor ever. The receptionists are always rude, in person as well as on the phone. After having my eye appointment, they ordered my contacts which were on back order for almost 4 weeks. Once they came in, they never called to let me know. I came in to finally get them after I had to call and ask if the contacts had arrived and they told me I needed an appointment to get them because the contacts needed to be fitted. I asked if they could see me then, since I was already there. They squeezed me in and let me leave with the contacts. After the contacts ran out, I called to order more. They again told me I needed to come in for a SECOND appointment to fit the contacts, but they'd have to order them first. I asked if they could just supply me with my prescription to order my contacts elsewhere, and they refused, stating its a rule that I come to have them fitted first. They ordered them and made me an appointment to come back in to get them. Once my appointment arrived, I left work early that day to show up on time for the appointment as well as travel out of my way to get to the office. Once I arrived, they tell me that my contacts have not arrived yet and they'd call me with more info. That would've been great to let me know before I went for my appointment, don't you think? They didn't even apologize. It's now a week and a half later and I've called 3 times since I've been into the office. They keep responding that they "will get back to me" In a very rude tone. Zero stars should really be an option. My family had a terrible experience with Maine Optometry. The receptionists are very rude and condescending. Myself as well as two of my children have had eye exams here two years in a row. Last April I had my eyes examined for new glasses. I was born with a condition called Strabismus, have had eye surgery and NEED to wear glasses at all times. My entire life up, until moving to Maine, I had seen the head specialist for my condition in the eye department at Yale. I was VERY apprehensive about seeing a new doctor. My exam was VERY rushed and the doctor was VERY rude. I received my new glasses and could not see out one lens at all- worse than my regular vision. I called with my issue and was treated very rudely (Sense a trend? Maybe I should break out a thesaurus.) I went back in again to have my eyes re-examined. I was treated like I was burdening them for them making a mistake. She claimed everything was correct on my prescription and that maybe it was my glasses. The optometrist also rechecked my glasses to make sure they were the same as the prescription. They were. So there I was stuck with glasses I couldn't see through and a doctor and optometrist telling me they're fine and that. I "just need to get used to them.". I have been wearing glasses for all 37 years of my life and have never had to "get used to a new pair ". I then ordered another pair of glasses in hopes that maybe the optometrist was wrong. Nope. Now I have two pair of glasses that I cannot see through and have had to wait an entire year for my insurance to cover another eye exam. Someone needs to go back to school or hand in their license. My eye sight has dramatically declined since when I first went here. I can only imagine how wrong my children's glasses may be. We will be trying our luck at a different doctor this month. So disappointing. It is very dangerous to mess around with people's sight. They shouldn't be in business. read more
