Solid local daytime diner. I've only ever been for breakfast which they do well. I'm a fan of the Midwestern omelet and rye toast. My mom likes the breakfast bowl, and the rest of the crew rounds out with pancakes, eggs, and meats. The dining room is pretty large, and they've got room to open up more in the back. Service is fast and friendly. They'll keep your coffee cup full and make sure you've got all you need with your meal. Nothing here is the best I've ever had, but everything is solid enough, and there are lots of local regulars who seem to agree. read more

Ordered four large pizzas a week in advance and when we arrived they were uncooked!! I should have known when I placed the order the person taking the order was rude. I thought he was just having a bad day. Nope! It was a sign to go elsewhere! We wandered randomly into Main Street Cafe on a road trip through Michigan -- and am very happy that we did! The restaurant has a steady flow of customers, and seems to be a favorite for local young and old alike. We entered through a door that led to Main Street Pizza, which offered pizza by the slice, but continued into the sit down area of the Main Street Cafe. We were seated promptly, and the waitress gave us menus. We considered the two daily specials -- Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, veggie, and roll for $9.99 or the BLT wrap with chips ($8.99). We also checked out the small salad bar, which also featured chicken noodle soup and bean soup. But, alas, we had both been tempted by the pizza that we had passed on the way in. We ordered one of the specialty pizzas -- a medium Street Specialty for $12.99 (June, 2023). This pizza features a ton of toppings -- pepperoni, ham, mushrooms, onions, green peppers, and green olives. The pizza arrived in a reasonable amount of time (15 minutes) and was piping hot, fresh from the oven. The medium was generous both in size and in the quantity of its toppings and mozzarella. Its crust was baked to perfection. We would've preferred a bit more tomato sauce, and for the green peppers and onions to be roasted longer, but otherwise it was a very very good pizza. The two of us were only able to eat half of the pizza at lunch, and we probably over-indulged with that amount! We enjoyed the leftovers over the next two days! We'd also like to acknowledge the very good service that we received from the waitress. She was friendly and efficient, and didn't slow down for even a second while we were there. read more

Food is good. Pizza is great. Only complaint is they need to take the garbage out of the dining area. It smells bad.

It's connected to Main Street pizza, parking is easy, and it's about as "small town diner" as you can find anywhere. The people are friendly, coffee is hot, food is good. In a big city this would be a two or three star cafe, nothing special. But in a small town, with not much else to offer, a friendly face, good meal and a price you can afford is all it takes. The pizza is good quality, the burgers are decent, and the prices are right. read more

Well well well here we go again, folks! Where to begin, where to begin? Well the cutie and I decided to keep it local today and dined at Main Street Cafe for the first time in a good many months! Let's get right into the action! What did you order oh great mascot of Saint Johns? I hear you, I hear you! I ordered the olive burger and folks let me tell ya it was a game time decision. I was back and forth with that or a wet burrito but I called it right when the waitress was asking what I wanted, whew! Got fries to bootily bootily boot too with that tasty honey mussy! The cute girl got the patty melt with fries. My burger was god tier, I got the half pound slab of cow on bun, son! Cooked to perfection and topped with deliciousness oh lord help me I want more. I loved this meal and everything about the restaurant experience. We sat right in the window and had a perfect view of downtown. The cutie loved her meal too. We ordered German sweet chocolate cake after to share and test out, y'all! It was just okay and the cutie hated it, yuck! But damn what a burger! Made this certified dough boy smile ear to ear! We were looking for food that would not be disappointing and discovered a gem! This is the place to go for reasonably priced, mid western, homestyle, corn fed, unpretentious food in St. John's Michigan. The staff was amazingly accommodating & friendly. We both agreed that neither of us remember service this good in decades! They are not trying to be anything elevated or trendy just a nice, clean cut place where local families & older folks come to enjoy dependable food & folks. We ordered pizza which was good. The salad bar which was cheap, clean, & fresh. And pie which was unbelievable & homemade! Wow! Ask your server for recommendations and prepare to be pampered at an affordable price. Great Food, clean, friendly! We enjoy it every time we go. We became regulars a few years ago. Right now I think they are stil closing at 2:00 in the afternoon because they are short of help (call & ask their hours or see online, definitely worth it) but all their food is like home cooked I think (it taste & looks like it), no shortcuts here. read more

I was craving breakfast and considering that I went to Big Boy the morning before I figured I should check out SJ's other breakfast option; McDonalds doesn't count obviously, man those hash browns give you heartburn faster than you can eat them. Main Street Cafe is kind of like Cheers, without the alcohol factor obviously, more for the fact that everyone knows everyone, you know from when they went to SJHS together back in 1948. This place is exactly what you want it to be. Full of older people, farmers, and retirees there for a reasonably priced hot meal served quick by friendly waitstaff. I had the baked chicken. It was hot and real mashed potatoes, homemade gravy. Stuffing had too much sage, but at least it was homemade, roll was soft and delicious. Chicken noodle soup seemed standard issue Gordon's food service. Salad bar was nothing special but was clean and fresh. Husband had reuben and asked for it on their homemade whole wheat. It was delicious. We were there on a Sunday afternoon for this meal at about 1:30 pm. Have been there four times before for breakfast or lunch and always fast and hot. Coffee is delicious, too. Bathrooms clean and bright. Big windows in restaurant look out on street. Really like this place. Highly recommend. read more

I ate here with my family on Saturday afternoon. We are not familiar with the area, were starving, and it was recommended to us. Big mistake. I had the ribeye steak sandwich, which was not all that great, and one of my brothers had a patty melt. The both of us got extremely sick starting last night. He is feeling better today, but I am still slightly under the weather. I don't know if it was the actual food that made us sick or if one of the chefs wasn't washing their hands...who knows. We had lunch there. I had a turkey club. It was mainly bread. Lots of cheap bread. My daughter liked her chicken strip and french fries but they charged us for the adult size portion. There was 1 chicken strip (as requested) and a small serving of fries. The ceiling lights looked as if they haven't been cleaned in sometime and some look as if they are about to fall. Good food, took some family members while they were visiting to try it out because we had Good experiences and food there. Our family of 12, we all got there on a Saturday, no realizing they were just starting to close for the day, a woman behind the counter told us we are closed, I said" oh man" Turned around and the told the family that, and the waitress starts running her mouth to another waitress as we're walking out about how it's not her fault we are closed and just being rude for no reason. Don't get their pancakes, they are totally tasteless. Incredibly bland. McDonald's has better pancakes. I told our nice waitress their pancakes are not so good and they obviously are not buttermilk ones. She confessed that many customers complain about them and when she tells the owner, he doesn't listen. Apparently, this cheapskate owner changed the recipe to save money. Bad idea. Hey owner of Main Street Café, why don't you listen to us customers? So you serve an inferior item just to save two nickels? Shame on you. read more

The service was okay, could have been faster. Food was okay. We had an omelette which was very thin not at all fluffy, the tomatoes in the omelette were pink not red, the amount of feta cheese was scant. When the waitress gave us our check, she did not say thank you for coming neither did the gal at the counter who took our money. Others have written good reviews so maybe this was just an off day for the whole staff. Not sure if we will go back. There are other restaurants that are much better. read more
