This is the most disappointing Chinese restaurant I've ever tried. I came in on a Friday @ 2pm. There was no customers in the whole place and the dining area was closed off. So we ended up sitting at a table in front of the counter. We ordered 2 lunch specials. Chicken with garlic sauce and BBQ Pork lo mien. Both of which came with "fried rice". Chicken with garlic sauce had no flavor. We asked for extra spicy but it was lacking on all levels. BBQ pork lo mien was oily and didn't have any veggies or garnishes. The BBQ pork was a decent but didn't have that Chinese BBQ flavor. The 'fried rice" was horrible. They literally served rice that was fried on its own. We ordered a few different dishes. The moo goo gaipan was flavorless and the chicken had the look and texture of someone already having chewed it. And it was kind of greasy. The vegetables were well prepared but the whole dish had no flavor. The sweet and sour chicken had a ton of batter on it probably a 4:1 ratio of batter:chicken. The beef on a stick was very dry. The shrimp lo mein was good though. And the sweet and sour soup had minimal flavor. That said the portions are plentiful. A large would feed two unless you're starving. I really didn't want to leave this review initially bc of how restaurants are struggling. But at the end of the day this restaurant probably won't make it anyway bc of the quality of the food. read more

This was probably my least favorite Chinese food and restaurant that I've ever been to. Spring rolls were filled completely with cabbage and pea only. Chicken fried rice had chicken that was semi-cooked with rice only (no veggies or anything as you'd normally find a little of in a basic chicken fried rice). General Tso's shrimp was good, but nothing was that great. The restaurant itself was freezing, and even the waitress was wearing a jacket. Sitting right next to the thermostat, I saw it was set at 58, on a night that had a windchill of 0 outside. The server was very friendly though, so that was nice. Only place open on a Sunday night - which isn't to say I wouldn't have tried it anyway - sort of sorry I did. The have the ever present buffet - which is never my thing - my friend went that route with the usual hit and miss success. I went menu thinking I would have something cooked to order and fresh. To be honest I have lost my taste for chinese food in the past couple of years but I still love moo shu pork - the brown sauce and pancakes make it sort of like an oriental soft taco. Now my mouth is ready - haven't had this dish in years. They bring me a steaming plate of moo sho pork and say it will be a few on the pancakes - I wait - taking only a few bites so I can save it to wrap in my pancakes. After several refills on the ice tea, which tasted like a bandaid smells, they finally bring the brown sauce and inform me they have no pancakes - really - did u just figure that out. No. They apparently don't make them on site so what they had were molded- granted I wouldn't want moldy pancakes but how about letting me know so I can order something else. Was it good? Not a good experience. The first problem, they charged me an extra almost $5 for pork fried rice instead of just fried rice. I didn't realize that it just said fried not pork fried. This is some what to comment towards the other persons comment. If you can view the kitchen of every restaurant you went in to you would eat out a lot less. Trust me! I worked in a restaurant for a few years. It made me the picky person i am today! On another note, I have gone to this place since i was a child. Like i had stated in another review i made it is hit or miss. I have gone there and had great food. I have gone there and had horrible food. The one thing i have never had a problem with is their take out. I have ordered it while at work for my lunch. They always say 10-15 min, and that is what it takes. I've lived in Somerset for a lot of years and there has been only one Chinese place that I keep coming back to and that is the Main Moon...I had my first chicken and broccoli with fried rice here and I loved it...the chicken is tender and sautéed in a soy sauce that's to die for and the broccoli is super fresh...I enjoy when it would soak up the soy sauce and you would get that extra tasty piece of broccoli...also the fried rice is amazing here which is cut above any other place because most places use a chicken based rice that is yellow when you order the fried rice...this place uses your rice and it is cooked in a soy sauce with onions that pop when you bite into them...it's a mouth watering duo...the buffet is where it is with a sampling of the menu and the best Chinese Somerset has to offer definitely try it... read more

Of the two oriental restaurants in Somerset - this is the better of the two. With that being said - it's definitely not going to compare to some of the oriental restaurants in neighboring larger metropolitan areas - but they really don't have to. They have one real competitor in the arena - and anyone local will likely fill you in that their competitor has definitely been lacking in the quality of their offerings. The Main Moon buffet is the usual fare - in fact - the choices on that buffet really hardly ever change. So - if you go there once and find something you like - chances are - if you're back in town seven months later and find yourself in the mood for that again - well - you'll find it still being served on the buffet. The food is not going to send your tastebuds into a frenzy of delight - but it'll satisfy most seeking such fare in a turnpike town. Prices were raised recently - but they're still reasonable and if ordering from the menu they will accomodate your requests to spice dishes up or down. The dining area is small - and usually congested on weekdays during lunch. They are very family friendly though and the staff is fairly attentive. You likely have had better oriental dining experiences - but if you're in Somerset - this is the better of the two choices you have. read more

My favorite chinese place in town. They are so quick and delicious. If you call and order they literally have it ready in 10 minutes. The chicken is good chicken, not rubbery or fatty. I love their general tso and rice. definitely recommended 10/10 and great prices also. read more

oh boy!!!! Where do I start with this one??? Well Bill and I went to this place on the advice of many people in the area ( first mistake: listening to the people in the area....) I had heard good things about main moon and wanted to try it out. Now this is where the pain starts. We walked in and there was no one in the place (that's a good thing, fast service, hahahahaha yeah right!!!!) The lady told us to circle what we wanted on the menu and give it back to her. Easy enough.... So, we did what we were told, and waited about ten or so minutes for our order to be completed. Then Bill paid for the meal and we left.... Now this is where the communication breakdown begins. Now I'm a stickler for making sure everything is done correctly, so I look in the bag and find out this isn't even our order. We turn around and go back into the place, and once again leave with the wrong order. Finally, the third time was a charm and this time they somehow got it right. I was pissed by this point. Come on, really???? I understand that the people who work there do not understand English all that well and obviously cannot read English either. My point to this is if you're easily frustrated, DO NOT GO HERE!!!! And by the way, the food is mediocre at best. If you want decent "chinese" food, head on up to the buffet about a mile away... If you are looking for good red jello and fried dough, this a perfect place for you. However, if you are a family stopping at a convenient Chinese restaurant on the way home from vacation, don't stop here. They actually have a sign that says that there is a surcharge if you take more than you can eat. As a traveling missionary, I have the opportunity to eat at Asian buffets in different cities. I particularly like to have all-you-can-eat sushi but unfortunately Main Moon doesn't have any nor do they have ice cream for dessert. In general, the food selection here is among the smallest I've seen among Asian buffets. I mostly ate fried rice, which wasn't all that great. About the only thing I liked about Main Moon is hearing Christian music in the background. Otherwise, I would have avoided eating at this place except my host offered to buy me lunch here. read more

Walked in a little after they closed their dining room and they turned the lights back on to let us eat in. Very polite staff had no problem explaining different things on the menu that we weren't familiar with. Food is on par for what I would expect from a typical Chinese restaurant; nothing spectacular but also nothing that I didn't find satisfactory. Seems relatively clean. Chinese food is one of my favorites and main moon takes the cake. I stop in when ever I can and get there lunch Buffett. It is on the smaller side but everything is fresh. Have only had bad service once and it was from the owner. It was early in the day so I'm not sure if they were not ready for us or what. My car broke down on the PA turnpike on a Saturday, and this was the only non-obesity-causing (i.e., fast food) restaurant in the area that I could walk to. It was the absolute highlight of my otherwise crummy weekend! The staff was very polite, the service was quick, and the food was hot and fresh (I ordered off the menu, avoiding the buffet, which seemed a bit tired, as it was late on a Sunday evening). It was simply a joy to be in a place that I could easily get a tasty, healthy vegetarian meal. I had the Buddha's Delight and my husband had Szechuan tofu, both were very good. Working in Somerset for a few weeks and they were the closest Chinese restaurant near the turnpike hotels. First of all no delivery, which was ok cause no Chinese restaurant delivers in this town I'm told by hotel front desk ( btw $$$ making idea there to open a delivery service for food ) After ordering the only thing positive was that I only had to wait 10 minutes for our orders. My house chow mein was without noodles and basically onion celery soup with hardly any meat. Crab rangoons came without my red sweet dipping sauce :( General Tso's chicken was dry and both chow mein and General Tso's side of rice was upgraded to fried rice which neither came with, instead 1 white rice and also had and order of lo mein which was missing. My egg roll was actually really good. I asked for forks and plate which I was told were in the bag. And we're not. As were there no sauces. Then they couldn't figure how to use my card and told me it was no good. Asked my what kind of card it was and it clearly says VISA on it finally after 7 minutes and 3 people trying they got my order paid for. Really put off by this and hope this was a fluke but too much went wrong and I won't try this place again. Reading all the previous reviews I see that the locals like the place and the city-folk (out-of-towners) don't. This is understandable as the Main Moon is a little off the beaten track, not just in location. However, I have been here several times (I am from a town about 40 miles away) and enjoy both their take-out and their buffet. I think their garlic green beans are the best - just make sure you get them when they are first put on the buffet line! Plus, since I come from so far away I always check and double check any take-out orders. The nice people who work there (whether they speak English or not) will try to comply with any request such as extra sauce for dumplings, etc. It is NOT your average big-city oriental restaurant with a humongous menu, just a friendly little local taste of China. They may not have ice cream but their sugar-coated puffy donut things are to die for. I'd like to see a menu online though! read more
