It is so impressive how consistent they have been all of these years, it's so comforting to know that I will always have a place to get a warm, delicious bowl of ramen nearby. Everything on their menu is exquisite, the chicken wings are actually insane with how crunchy and flavorful they are. My go to is the garlic soy sauce flavor as my family doesn't like too much spice, but the extra dipping sauces on the side provide the perfect amount of heat if you do crave a little kick. Their fried rice is flavorful and I love to customize it with their beef bulgogi! Something to also try is their pork buns as they put the most tender pieces of pork inside of a soft pillowy bun! The ramen is the true star of the show, as I've never had a more flavorful tonkatsu broth anywhere else, and the portions are massive so I always end up with extra for lunch the next day (or a late night bowl haha). The servers are always sweet and helpful, and they are always playing K-pop in the background usually with a lyric video or even a dancing video which is always entertaining. The parking lot is quite small though, but you can always park around the block and just walk over! If you are anywhere near the south shore I am begging you to check out Spoonsticks!

On a Saturday evening, we were able to get a table and it's a spacious but cozy dining room with lots of dark wood accents. It's a casual tavernesque spot and I think it's comfortable for families and friend groups alike, although I saw a few date nights happening around us. An all-around good vibe and expect swift and friendly service. They have one veggie option and normally that would be a little disappointing but when the one veggie option is THAT good, who cares? The broth is out of this world and there's generous amounts of bok choy, bean sprouts, bamboo shoots, spinach vermicelli noodles and tofu. We often come by this way on a Sunday morning and I realized why we hadn't tried Kokyou before and it's because they don't open until 2pm on Sundays, but on this Saturday, we came in just in time for lunch. The interior is very bright, neat and clean and we're seated in a middle table. Bamboo chopsticks are set on the table and they seem more elegant without the disposable paper wrapper. The picture menu gets your appetite going. I was looking for Ika Geso, but they don't have it on the menu, so we settled for Chicken Karaage, which was pretty good. The fried chicken chunks came out hot & crunchy and dusted with spicy shichimi. Soon, our deep bowls of ramen arrived. My BIL's Seafood Ramen had plenty of shrimp, scallops & a couple of mussels on the half shell in a dark soy chicken broth. My wife's Kalbi Ramen had chunks of beef short rib in a spicy pork & beef broth. My Gyuniku Ramen had slices of braised beef shank in a rich beef broth with plenty of baby bok choy. All bowls had a half soft boiled egg and corn niblets. I drained my bowl down to the bottom. I really want to come back to try the Donburi and I know I want the Curry Chicken Katsu over rice the next time we're out this way.

There were plenty of…read moretables available, and our waitress promptly came over, offered suggestions for my drink choice, and provided friendly service throughout the meal. My date and I decided to try the French onion soup. We both really enjoyed the flavorful, light broth. The presentation was stellar. It was literally served inside an onion. Our waitress gave us a steak knife so we could "go to town" on the actual yellow Spanish onion, and of course, we did. Inside, there were some cheese and onion pieces, along with what seemed to be crispy fried onions on top. The menu stated that the soup contained five different types of onions, but surprisingly, it wasn't overly "oniony" or cheesy. I also missed the crunch of a traditional crouton, which was not included. The onion itself barely held much of the filling, but I would still order this again because I really enjoyed the beautiful, delicate wine and beef broth taste. Instead of ordering a full entrée, I chose the octopus appetizer for my meal. It was beautifully cooked. The dish brought two tentacles which were very tender. It also had a wonderful char on top. Underneath was a romesco sauce with a subtle hint of spice. On top of the octopus was a combination of greens with fennel and olives. If you don't enjoy acidic flavors, I wouldn't recommend this dish. There was a strong vinegar acidity throughout. Personally, I love acidic foods, so this was a wonderful surprise for me. That said, I wouldn't call the dish well-balanced. The acidity definitely takes over, even with the romesco sauce. For my palate, though, it worked beautifully. My date selected the barbecue brisket sandwich with French fries. It was a nice portion. Both of our drinks were well balanced yet strong. The flavors were bold and interesting in each dish we tried. My only real critique was that the French onion soup didn't have enough of the actual ingredients inside the onion. Still, the broth was delicious, and the presentation made it visually appealing.
