Having lived in Kings Cross for nearly 15 years I had heard various rumours of there being a good sushi place nearby. About six months ago I undertook the mission and found it. I am glad that I did. This is the best sushi in the Kings X/Euston area by a mile. Indeed it stands up as being pretty good on a London wise basis. I have now been back 4 times. The decor is plain - this is neighbourhood restaurant stuff. However, the service is attentive and the money goes into the ingredients. The blackened cod is as good as my wife has had. The Nigiri and hand rolls are excellent, as are the tempura. My only danger is that I liked the stuff I had the first time so much that I haven't been more adventurous with the menu. However the quality looks (from others diners experiences) to carry to all their dishes. Why not 5 stars? The wine list is v short! Essentially there is a choice of about 5 wines in total, none of which are great. I think they should offer a corkage facility of £5 or £10. It is something I would definitely take advantage of. Over all though, if you haven't been, and are nearby, give it a shot! I don't think you will be disappointed. read more

I really like Mai sushi, especially for the quality of the sushi compared to the cost! If you're not sure what to order, choose lots of their fantastic nigiri sushi. Each and every time I have ordered nigiri here all the fish has been fresh, tasty and beautifully presented. - Unagi: I was sooo happy about their perfect unagi. It was served slightly warm with the perfect sweet soy sauce. - Amaebi: tasted super fresh. Yum! - Hottate: I LOVE raw scallops and these did not disappoint - Hamachi: You don't see yellow tail enough in London - but this was lovely too. - Saba: This was my least favourite, but it was still good! - Salmon: Salmon is always good in London, so this was good too. - We tried lobster maki-sushi as well which I liked (i loved their teeny wasabi balls too!) but it still didn't have quite as amazing flavour as the other nigiri. My oh Mai. Sometimes I get a mega-maki hankering. Sometimes this occurs by Euston, where I find myself often. When these two collide - oh, glory be! - I head to Mai. Tucked down a street right by the British Museum (Halfway between Euston and Kings Cross), this ain't much to look at from the outside. Staff, however, are super-great. And rolls are fish-stuffed. And rice is (if you're lucky) nice and warm. And I love resting my chopsticks on those ceramic holders and pouring my soy sauce into a vessel care of a mini saline teapot. IT'S THE LITTLE THINGS. I've only ever had sushi here, though I've been tempted by katsu don. I highly recommend the spicy tuna and tuna crunch rolls, complete with finely diced chive and the right degree of spice. Generous with the ginger, I also like the simpler nigiri and veggie sushi stuffed with pickle, cucumber and avocado. And sure, I'll fess up: I'm a sucker for a prawn tempura. Take away, and free delivery for 2 miles (one set lunch direct to the British Library, puhlease!). Yelp note: only disappointment ever has been the miso soup. From a dry mix, I think, as the flavour is weak and bottom of the bowl left grainy with un dissolved miso bits. Pass on this and make room for delicious things like gyoza! read more

Mai Sushi really, really surprised me. It's one of the few places, in London, Japan or anywhere else, where I've actually enjoyed sushi. Yes, it's Chinese-run. Yes, it's about as authentically Japanese as chicken tikka masala is authentically Indian. It's also really quite good. The dragon roll in particular is huge and delicious, with perfect pieces of avocado and wonderful prawn tempura. Mains of tori don and unagi don paled in comparison to their Japanese counterparts, (both dishes were far, far too soggy) but the unagi don in particular was also significantly cheaper than any I've had in Japan. So a reprieve. An extensive and inexpensive Sake list's another huge bonus here. Service is indeed spotty, but it was friendly enough - and sometimes being left alone for a while can be a benefit - it's quite an intimate restaurant. An excellent choice if wanting to kill time waiting for a train at Euston. read more

The hot dishes worked way better than the sushi. We had miso cod which was perfectly cooked and tempura which was crispy and light. Both were very good. The big let down was the sushi. We ordered several rolls. They were sloppily made and were not the beautiful packages you would normally expect from a Japanese restaurant. The key thing for me was that the rice was not right. It looked and tasted more like long grain rice rather than short grain rice. It was also overcooked and didn't have the al dente toothiness you normally expect from sushi. The seasoning was also off. I would recommend against any of the rolls or nigiri and focus on the sashimi. Overall, an OK meal. The Chinese owners need to up their game in the sushi front though. It's a let down. read more

The serving staff are friendly, approachable and happy to make suggestions while the food itself is some of the best around while staying affordable. I had an MRI scan this morning. It's a pretty daunting experience and while it wasn't as bad as I'd heard it would be, I was definitely glad when it was over. Especially when I realised that the fact it was over meant sushi time! My lovely mum took me here for an early post-hospital lunch. We were faintly put off at being greeted by the sight of a 3 star scores on the doors sticker but quickly agreed that scores on the doors are kind of stupid, and anyway we'd be prepared to take all manners of risks for sushi. I am so glad we didn't walk away! The service was great. Our waitress was lovely, even moving the heater nearer to our table when we sat down! Our sushi wasn't perfectly formed but was the perfect temperature and tasted amazing and very fresh. It was also really generous with the fillings, I hate when you order maki and get a tiny, match sized sliver of fish in the middle! We had 2 Asahis, a tuna maki, two salmon maki's and a cucumber maki. It was just right for a light lunch. And the bill for 24 pieces of sushi and 2 beers? Under £20. read more

Mai Sushi misses five stars by a hair's breadth, the service being occasionally a little slow, due to the place's success. I discovered this place entirely by accident, as one of my clients (http://www.dec.org.uk ) is based opposite and, in search of a bowl of stir-fried noodles, I stepped in one lunchtime. I've just downed a plate of Yasai soba - vegetables, tofu and noodle stir-fry, perfectly cooked and not remotely greasy, at £4.80, which is a bargain. The food is fresh, hot (where appropriate) and wholesome. The noodle soups are superb, the tempura crispy and tasty. Staff are friendly and apologetic to the point of grovelling when food isn't served quickly. So, I feel a little mean for snatching a star away, but accuracy demands! read more

Chinese owned/run sushi joint within a very short walk of Euston station. Avoid the drunk blokes on the benches outside and the (presumably less drunk?) blokes in their parked cars, eyeing you as you walk past (seriously, what is it with this street?) and you'll enter this unpretentious little establishment. Service was spotty: we were left blessedly alone while we decided what we wanted, but weren't asked if we wanted to start with drinks while we perused the menu. The wait for the bill was long, and it took a long time to flag down anyone to get the bill itself. Despite the table being large and there being plenty of space on it, they kept whisking plates away the second you reached for the last piece, which made me wonder if they were perhaps running low on plates in the kitchen. The menu was surprisingly concise and somewhat uninspired. I usually like to 'break in' a sushi place with either a sashimi sampler or, my favourite, chirashi-zushi. Chirashi wasn't an option here, and the sashimi platter was grouped with sushi and looked rather bland, so I opted to let my friend do all the ordering. Our appetiser was a broiled scallop dish in mayo, served with tobiko over wakame. I've seen this same dish in various incarnations at just about every B-grade sushi joint the world over, and it's a consistent (if somewhat redundant) crowd pleaser: fresh scallops, creamy sauce with a hint of spice, crunchy tobiko, fresh wakame. Nice, but not really worth £9. The maki we tried were somewhat awkwardly-rolled, with a slightly heavier rice-to-filling ratio than I would expect at this price point (£9-11 per six piece roll). Rice was fresh but lacked any vinegar. Fillings were ample in proportion to everything else, but flavours were, again, somewhat uninspired. Spicy this, crunchy that. Nothing you haven't tried before. Three rolls, one appetiser, one miso soup, and one dessert (I didn't try either the miso, which did look watery, or the tempura ice cream, which looked alright) came out to £42 (with 10% gratuity included), which felt steep to me. Noise level was moderate, and there were more fruit flies buzzing around than one might have anticipated in early November, but otherwise this place is a solid middle-of-the-road local option. read more

A most pleasant experience and a hidden treasure! The restaurant is run in a very family and friendly way without the abundance of Asian kitsch. The cook goes to Billingsgate fishmarket every morning to personally select the freshest fish and the quality shows. We had a hot pot that was fired with real burning coal with an impressive selection of freshest fish and ingredients to share for 22 GBP. The owner is happy to talk you through the menu. We are sure to recommend it to our friends and go there as often as possible. It is well worth the trip to an otherwise not too interesting area and can easily be booked for larger groups. UPDATE: Went to Mai Suhsi again lately and was very pleased to see that they redecorated the place a bit. Lovely! We went on a weekday evening and the place was packed. The recent success resulted in service being a bit slow, surely something that can be fixed if the hype continues. As as always the food was wonderful. Reservations might be advisable now. read more

Service was extremely slow on the friday night. The waitress greeted me and said she'd be with me in a minute, then wanders off to the phone to take more take out orders for the next fifteen minutes. When I finally got a table from a different waiter, the order took forever to come and I mean upwards of half an hour. The place didnt even have a sushi bar, it's run by chinese people who serve the green tea in chinese style teapots. He only thin that can rescue this review would be the food quality. read more

Not bad, but not outstanding either. I had the Sushi and Sashimi chef's combo. It was pretty good, but I would have expected more variety from a large combo. The sashimi was only salmon, tuna and yellowtail. The nigri was exactly the same fish (with one shrimp). Finally the maki was a standard California roll - all 6 pieces. Boring! read more

A really cool little place right around the corner from the British Library. The staff were welcoming, the atmosphere chill and the decor utterly without pretension (ok, it's a little divey, but I think that's a good thing). And oh man is this sushi fresh! The gyoza were tasty but paled in comparison to the tempura prawn inside out roll. The prawn was crispy on the outside, cooked the perfect-melt-in-your mouth way, and it was beautifully complimented by the creamy avocado and nutty toasted sesame seeds. Mai Sushi is a new sushi place that opened a few months ago on Charlton Street. The food is what you would expect for an emerging sushi restaurant, with all the standard foods. The price is slightly hugher than expected, given the location, and the food is nothing special so the higher price isn't really waranted. The atmosphere is good and the service is fast, portions are a decent size. There are also free bonuses, including jasmin tea, a starter, and a jelly dessert. Overall, a decent restaurant, but not one I'm likely to go to often. read more
