The office staff of this doctor is delightful and accommodating. My frustration comes from the doctor himself. After having a fracture of my tibial plateau, I went to see Dr. Mai in Hanford. The exam was extremely minimal; no more than 10 minutes tops. He poked my leg and patted my knee. I told him it was extremely painful. I asked if there maybe should be an MRI or something to check out the soft tissue. He told me that he would wait for the fracture to heal first and added that the next few weeks would be hell, good luck, and left. I phoned the office several times in the next few weeks with various concerns. Mostly I was told to just be patient. So I did everything they told me to: Stay off the leg. That's it. Okay. Fast forward to the second and last appointment. He told me to take off the brace and did the poking and prodding thing again. I pointed out that there is still swelling and a great deal of pain. He said that it was normal, and said I was free and clear to use the leg again. Concerned about the continual swelling, I asked Dr. Mai if maybe an MRI would be appropriate, so we could see if there is further damage to the knee. He said no. Nearly verbatim: "If you were a younger person, this fracture might be tragic. They ride bicycles, hike, swim and all that. You are old. So it doesn't matter. Eventually, you will get arthritis, and will probably get your knee replaced." I stifled the urge to say something rude or poke him in the eye. I asked about physical therapy. "Oh no. Just use it as much as you can. Let pain be your guide," he said. Going home, my leg swelled up even further. My knee actually bent the wrong direction twice one day. I became more careful to avoid a repeat performance of this. Meanwhile, I searched for another doctor so I could get another opinion. My knee is very painful. My leg continues to be extremely swollen. My knee is pretty warm to the touch (warmer than the other side). I cannot use it to stand or sit. I need to grab something to help with that. It has now been nine weeks since my initial injury. I continue to go through intense pain. I continue to hope to find someone who might actually care to help me. I will say that the office staff, was caring and allowed me to get my records immediately when I traveled to their office. As all orthopedic doctors are more than an hour away, it's quite an ordeal to see anyone. Dr. Mai's records neglected to mention a complete medical history. I think (although what do I know. I am just a journalist and music/art teacher) that osteoporosis and a history of over thirty fractures, COPD and all would find their way onto a relevant history. Well, my doctor referred me to them, but they have hardly any reviews and they've been in business for years and they're all one star reviews except for one I know I'm not going to them and I think that should be told to on here because a lot of people don't look here for reviews for a doctor and you need to because you should not go to a doctor like this It's horrible things that people were saying about him and people don't review at all and I don't understand that, but in any case I just need to tell you what I found out it is care quality for sure and it's the office and the doctor OK so there's that. read more

Not only does he not answer questions and rushes you, but he also takes personal calls during visits. He advised for surgery without explaining why or discussing options. Did not welcome questions, and had terrible bedside manners. He has numerous reviews of patients who needed revisions after doing surgery with him. This guy does not care for or respect patients. Rude and unskilled. Please do your research before going with this guy. read more

If I could give ZERO stars I would. This man needs to STOP doing surgery on people. He did a simple hip replacement for my dad and his hip kept popping out and blaming my dad or my mom saying she dropped him. A week later he did a 2nd surgery since he had no idea why my dad was in pain. He put in a longer rod. My dad was STILL in pain. He has been in the hospital twice (week each time), ER a FEW times and 2 rehabs so far in 4 months and still can't walk and still in pain. His new hip dr thinks Dr Mai caused major nerve damage and probably has femoral nerve palsy. After 4 months can't wait and is in extreme pain and in bed 23 hours a day only up for PT which is very painful. He has never seen him except for the surgeries. Never checked on him in either rehab. The new dr said he is trying to get his license taken away and no longer taking his patients. He also said get a lawyer and I will testify against him. RUN do NOT LET THIS MAN DO SURGERY ON YOU! read more

Dr Kenny Mai has terrible customer skills. I went to him in 2015 or 2016 to have my shoulder checked out. He was rude, he lied in front of me. I went to his office to have my shoulder looked at. Massive pain. Not 2 minutes into talking to me his cell phone rings. He puts his hand up to silence me and answers the call. I thought ok probably an emergency. Nope. I could clearly hear in the exam room that it was Comcast Xfinity calling to let him know that a technician was on the way to his home. He then hangs up and says stupid telemarketers robo calls. Then he just disregards that I was asking him a question and starts talking over me. He said "...sometimes in life when we hurt ourselves we just have to live with it and not do what hurts..." I thought this is coming from someone who obtained a medical degree? WOW. I tried asking more about my injury and treatment.. and he just cut me off and circled back to giving me a shot in the shoulder with a painkiller. I tried 3 times asking him and he just became more agitated. So after 3 times attempting to discuss treatment and him avoiding talking about While I am in great pain I gave in and decided the shot would atleast alleviate the pain. I am 6 feet tall sitting on the exam table. Mr Mai is short. I am saying this respectfully I am not berating shorter people. I ask him "would it be better if I sit in one the regular chairs for the shot?", he then stares at me angrily and then smiles and say "no it we be just fine with you there...". He then gives me the shot into my shoulder in a very unforgiving way. He was very rough with the shot, I let out a bear like roar in pain. He then rudely said "if you think that hurt then you shouldn't have surgery. ". To this day I can not understand how someone like this has a license. I have never written a yelp review but I feel my experience should be shared: Overall quite a poor experience. Fractured my first metatarsal (big toe). It required surgery. Upon meeting the Dr, he spent more time talking about developing future arthritis than how he planned to fix my foot in the surgery. He never once took my foot out of its soft splint to examine it, nor did he look me in the eye. My vitals were never taken, x rays never explained or even shown to me. Needless to say we wanted to get a second opinion from another doctor. When the nurse came back in (Martha was her name) to schedule for surgery, we told her we were going to seek out a second opinion and would call if we would like to schedule the surgery through Dr. Mai's practice. She immediately changed her attitude to very rude and cold saying "you won't find any surgeon sooner or better and I will not reserve this spot for you. You have until 3pm today and after that I will be out of the office for several weeks." She made us feel very trapped in making a decision, however we went with our gut. Ended up with a great experience and surgery the very next day through Sierra Pacific Orthopedics in Fresno. I was extremely disappointed in the quality of care from the start to the finish of the visit and definitely wouldn't recommend in the future. read more
