The Original and BEST Halal in all of New York City. Period. This mom and pop operation has been here for over a decade and they are STILL the only Halal spot to offer chunks of meat as opposed to the completely homogenized finely-chopped mystery meat you get everywhere else. Accept no substitute. These guys give you the good stuff along with extras like french fries and eggplant sprinkled in. Their yellow rice is second to none and their hero bread is always fresh, soft and deliciously sweet. They just recently upgraded to a Truck from their long standing cart and the food is exactly the same. Stop fooling yourself with all that commercial Halal guys crap. I'm very sorry but I did not enjoy this food I got lamb over rice and the toppings fries eggplant sauces and stuff it did not mix together it was very mushy texture the rice was mushy lamb not crispy and eggplant did not go well, rice was the American kind not basmati rice, and I just did not like this it was too expensive $8, I prefer the $5 lamb and rice (basmati) from other typical carts. When i got home and opened it up, it looked line there was no white and alot of red. The food was so spicy i couldn't even taste it. It's dangerous to have a halal cart this good and this close to home. Halal carts have become the new hot dog cart in NYC, but everyone knows that truly good chicken and/or lamb and rice is hard to come by. I was skeptical at first, particularly after finding that the combo platters cost $7. But, this cart really shines. For perspective, I'll comp with the 53rd and 6th cart that everyone and their mothers has eaten at. The chicken is cut into chunks and tastes barbecued with just the right amount of spices and not quite as dry as the shredded chicken at 53rd and 6th. The lamb is your typical spinning gyro meat. The rice, I would approximate to similar in flavor that of the 53rd and 6th cart, but of a fuller grain rather than the quasi-basmati that the 53rd and 6th cart uses. This platter actually comes with salad not just a smattering of lettuce but lettuce, a little onion, and tomato. It also comes with a few french fries and eggplant dropped on top which is a terrific addition if you ask me. Unfortunately, it does not come with pita. The cart's white sauce is thin and tastes pretty much like tahini. The hot sauce is a bit vinegary and not quite as delicious or spicy as that used at 53rd and 6th. All-in-all, it's a really solid meal and totally hits the spot when you're craving NYC street chicken and rice though it is a tad expensive. Yet another gem of a destination in Astoria. read more

These guys are GOOD. Lamb is incredibly, surprisingly flavorful. I've been living two blocks away from the Steinway station the past 3.5 years, walking by every day, and I'm an idiot for not trying them sooner. I've had 53rd and 6th Halal many a times, in conditions both sober and very much not, and I can honestly say I like this cart better. Only complaint is that the portion is a tad smaller than expected - at least for the combination platter at $7. Regardless, an insanely tasty option for this area. Luckily for me and my neighbors, there is no 20 minute wait (though there is always someone waiting for their food). Another Astoria win. read more

I have been to many halal carts. Sammy's in Jackson Heights, Little Neck and Hillside in Floral Park, the popular 53rd and 6th, and numerous others, but this is honestly the best cart food I have ever had. While other trucks rely on their white sauce for flavor, these guys actually cook the meat in the sauce and season it to give it a strong flavor. You don't have to douse your chicken and rice in buckets of white sauce just to make it taste good. The chicken itself is flavorful. I myself love white sauce so I usually douse it anyway. Their hot sauce is not too spicy and not too mild, and you can always ask for more. Another plus is that the food isn't oily at all, making this a healthy option (as healthy as it gets for cart food). You can pick between yellow and brown rice, both which taste good. The lamb is also very flavorful and among the best I have tasted. They add eggplants and french fries, which I think adds a unique combination to the already flavorful and aromatic chicken and rice. The only thing I don't like about this cart is that they put large onion pieces in the salad, which is really annoying...I end up just tossing them to the side and not eating them. Also, it would be nice if they cut up the chicken pieces smaller. The price is affordable, ranging from $5-7.50, depending on what you get. Drinks are not free. It closes at 9 PM so you can't go here if you're looking for a late night fix. Overall, this is the most underrated but most delicious halal food cart food I have had and I highly recommend it. read more

Though I'm addicted to the mixed platter at the 53rd street halal cart because I prefer their sauce (the one at this halal cart is more like tahini), this is, by far, the tastiest halal cart chicken I have ever had. This is one of the better halal food carts I've been to in the five boroughs. For the sake of comparison, I think the platters of chicken or lamb over rice at this place are tastier than 53rd and 6th (The Halal Guys) in Midtown, Sammy's Halal in Jackson Heights, and the King of Falafel and Shawarma in Astoria. Since I've never tried the falafels at this cart, I'll limit my review to their platters of meat over rice, with 53rd and 6th serving as the main focal point of comparison. At 34th and Steinway, both the lamb and chicken are of good quality and deftly prepared. Unlike 53rd and 6th, the meat is not finely chopped but rather cut into small chunks, which allows the meat to retain a tender interior as it cooks on the grill. One of my biggest complaints about 53rd and 6th is that their chicken can get too dry (which in turn requires that a ton of white sauce be slathered on top to give it moisture) and their lamb is almost always too greasy. Neither of these things are an issue at the cart on 34th and Steinway, where the meats have a nice, clean, savory flavor that is superior to all three of the aforementioned carts in my opinion. The side accompaniments in the chicken and lamb platters are better than their halal counterparts, too. The rice is of a quality, fuller grain (unlike the cheap yellow rice used at 53rd and 6th), the lettuce is generally fresher and crisper (albeit less plentiful), and there are various extras that are not included at 53rd and 6th such as grilled onion slices, tomato slices, eggplant, and french fries. My only gripe is that pita bread is not included with the platter. Both the white sauce and the hot red sauce used at this cart are thinner and lighter than 53rd and 6th, which might be a disappointment to the fans of that cart. While I'd also give the edge in sauces to 53rd and 6th, I think it's nice that the meat and rice at 34th and Steinway are of a high enough quality that the sauces don't have to be poured on in excessive quantities in order for the meal to taste good. Instead, the sauces serve as more of a complement rather than as the star of the show. Overall, this place is well worth a detour for those seeking a quality Middle Eastern halal cart. Note that it closes at 9pm daily, so if you're looking for super late night eats, you'll have to go elsewhere. read more

It's cooked all the way through unlike competition and very juicy. They serve it over rice, with a small salad, some chopped up eggplant, and a few fries. The portion is more than filling. Very deceitful when it comes to credit card charges. I ordered a mixed platter which is supposed to be 8 excluding tax. Since I used credit card, of course they're going to add the sales tax but I don't see how even after the sales tax it goes up to 9.25 unless I get a drink (I didn't get one). Before he handed me the phone to sign he asked if I got a drink, I said no drink. Signed and left and checked the next day and Bam overcharged. You are greeted with a smile, and if you are a regular,the team leader already knows what you want before you tell them. Orders are in hand within 8 minutes, even when there is a rush. The food is simply the best I have ever had from a cart: tender, beautifully seasoned and served with eggplant! In comparison, King of Falafel is like any other cart in the city: the food is dry, & the wait is ridiculous (15 minutes to serve 3 people ahead of me). I feel bad writing a 3 star review in this sea of 4's and 5's, but I gotta give my opinion: it's OK. Stopped by with the boyfriend late at night for one combo over rice ($7.50) and one chicken over rice ($6.50?) I really can't think of anything special, tbh. They give you fries (my favorite part of the meal ironically), fried eggplant, and a spicy pepper with your food, which is a nice touch. The meat is cut into large chunks and maybe we came on an off day, but our meat, while spiced very well, was dry and not moist. The white sauce is actually closer to tzatziki sauce, and it wasn't for me--way too sour and in no way went with my food. This is the shortest review I've ever written, because there just isn't anything to write home about. I'd give it 2 stars, but it's in a convenient location, open late, and if this many people give it 4's and 5's, maybe there is something to this cart I just don't get. I bought two standards chicken shawarma and lamb Gyro. Neither one was much good. Why would anybody put soggy french fries in a Gyro or shawarma? The taste of the meats was poor. although the tomatoes and eggplant were ok. not a good white sauce either. Pass it up there's a Gyro on every corner, I just picked the wrong one. read more
