If I could move back to Berlin, I'd definitely trek over to Neukölln a few mornings a week to hole up here to nurse an americano (and a glass of locally brewed passionfruit kombucha served with a glass straw!) after scarfing down their take on a vegetarian English breakfast.
As a San Franciscan, I've often found that the brunch offerings in Berlin leave a lot to be desired, leaving me craving something just a bit heartier. In other words, as much as it pains me to admit this, German breakfasts of bread, cheese, jam, and sliced meat don't really cut it for me and my unrefined American palate.
Oh wait. We're in Europe now. How about another Anglicized breakfast?!
I have a soft spot for baked beans on toast. And before visiting Mahlo Brunch Bar, the only ways to get my fix were 1. hopping on a plane to London or 2. buying questionably dented cans of imported Heinz baked beans.
This place puts so much love into their big brekky (two fried eggs, mushrooms, baked beans on sourdough toast, oven-roasted tomato, avocado, salad with pomegranate), atmosphere, decor, and service that I'm 100% certain that anyone who comes here and orders anything on the menu (that I unfortunately cannot really attest to, as I'm a creature of habit) will enjoy one of the best breakfasts they'll have in Berlin.
In fact, I don't even think I'll enjoy future English breakfasts in London as much. Mahlo Brunch Bar has also revolutionized how I think about fried eggs--paprika or bust! You'll also find the best kombucha in all of Berlin here (lovingly brewed elsewhere in Neukölln). And even though Berlin has way too many dreary days to count (or think about), this place always seems to have a lovely amount of natural light that goes well with the minimalist design.
I miss the year I spent in Berlin. But more importantly, I miss Mahlo Brunch Bar. (They even take card!) read more
