I traveled from out of state to Illinois to plan my father's memorial service with this funeral home. During the planning process, I worked with Josh, who was professional, compassionate, and extremely helpful. I am grateful for his care. Unfortunately, the conduct of the owner, John Maher, during the service was highly inappropriate and unprofessional. While I was delivering the eulogy, Mr. Maher--who appeared intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol--interrupted multiple times, shouting phrases such as "Charleston Chews." He continued to disrupt when Pastor Jaime led the prayer. Afterward, Mr. Maher took the floor, spoke incoherently, left, and then returned to speak again. At one point, he came within a foot of my 8-year-old daughter, slapped his own arm, and yelled, "He is in your blood." Many guests later approached me in shock, asking who he was and why he was present. After the service, Pastor Jaime asked me to extend grace, explaining that Mr. Maher suffered from PTSD but was generally considered reliable. Several staff members also privately expressed concern, stating they had never seen him in such a condition, and later contacted me to ask if I had been able to reach him, as they could not. They voiced worry that his behavior might recur at another upcoming service. I spoke directly with Mr. Maher, who was initially defensive but assured me my satisfaction was "paramount" and that he would review my bill for reimbursement. After numerous follow-ups, I received communication from his business partner and attorney, who sent me a non-disclosure agreement (with my father's name incorrectly listed) requiring my silence in exchange for a refund. In an email, Kevin stated that upon signing, the refund would be processed within 24 hours. Against my better judgment, and because I wished to give the funeral home the opportunity to improve, I signed the agreement. It has now been more than 80 days since the service, and no refund has been provided. Instead, I received an email from Mr. Maher, containing multiple typographical errors, stating that there would be no refund and implying suspicion of my intentions. I need to be clear: I only signed their agreement because I genuinely wanted to give this funeral home the opportunity to take responsibility and improve. But their failure to follow through, combined with the behavior we experienced at my father's memorial, shows a lack of accountability and respect for grieving families. A loss is already difficult enough without the last memory of a loved one's service being overshadowed by an intoxicated, disruptive funeral home owner. I can't thank Maher staff enough for the wonderful wake and funeral for my Mother-in-law! Eric, Josh, and Jan are so professional and supportive! They are there to help you every step of the way. Maher used to be the old Tinley Park Library and its mid-century look inside and out is something to see. Also their pricing was great! If you have a loved one who was in the service you can tell that they are very service oriented. The staff at Maher Funeral took the utmost care in handling my husband's arrangements. The staff was responsive to our needs and consistently checked in with us to make sure every single request was honored. Their attention to detail was meticulous. Eric, Joshua, Mike, and Jen were so thoughtful and compassionate. They answered calls, texts, and emails no matter the hour. They walked us through the process step by step. As for the facility itself, it was well kept, clean and provided a perfect backdrop for our family. We love that it was formerly a library, has wide open windows in the family room, a sitting area with a fireplace and ample parking. I highly recommend their service. Our family has buried 4 immediate family members in 2023. Our first experience with Maher was in March when my Aunt passed away. She specifically said she wanted to have her wake at Maher when she passed. So to honor her wishes, that is what our family did. It turned out that was the best decision she could have made. Since March we have been back for 3 more wakes. One in July for my Uncle, and two in November for my Dad and my Grandma. I cannot say enough wonderful things about Eric Hoffman. He is trustworthy, kind, compassionate and truly wants to help the families he serves. His partner Jan has now become an honorary member of our family. The funeral home is beautiful, and Eric's attention to every small detail is unmatched. Even though we met under awful circumstances, I couldn't be more grateful to Eric and Jan for walking this road with us and making things just a little easier. We used Maher when my mother in law passed. The funeral home walked us through each of the steps and answered our questions quickly. The facility was clean and updated and a lot less depressing than others in the area. The employees were compassionate and very understanding when we asked for her twin sister to come in early for a private visit. They made sure she had the privacy she needed to say her goodbyes. The reception area is bright and well lighted you did not feel the gloom one often feels with a funeral home. So for starters. I am new to Illinois and currently homeless/living in my car. I am/was on the move trying to get a Illinois I.d so I could get some help out here. In order for me to do that I had to get some paperwork notarized in order to get a I.d as a homeless person. I went to several places that stated they did notary's online after going to several banks and being turned away because I was not a customer or being told it would cost an insane amount of money because I'm not a customer and then calling a currency exchange and being told come on in its 5 bucks for a notary I went to my nearest one and was informed that they do not do notary's at majority of currency locations. It was a long day. After explaining to these banks what I needed notarized and receiving judgmental looks and rude service by the time I got to currency I was an emotional wreck. And felt like the world was against me. The guy there suggested I try the Maher funeral home across the street. So with what energy I had left I went over there walked in with my head down fully expecting to be turned away or treated with the same judgement I had all day. I walked in and a bright eyed sweet lady approached me her name was jan and she was so nice and understanding to me she talked to me and actually listened to me when I explained my situation. I felt heard. Then Eric came in. He was the nicest man and most understanding man I've ever encountered. So to make a long story short not only did they notarize my paperwork without charge. They asked if I was hungry. They warmed me up some pizza and talked to me for a few mins. By this time it was past 3 pm and I explained I had to be to the dmv by 4 for my scheduled apt all the way in Chicago heights. So while Eric warmed up my pizza jam ran around the building and put together an bag of waters and snacks and anything she could find really. And those things helped me so much being in a hot car with no money and no help I was brought to tears by the kindness of these people and couldn't believe it. I was so emotionally overwhelmed by there understanding and kindness. Before I left Eric allowed me to give him a hug and he said he understood and had been in a similar situation when he was younger and he gave me some money as well. I tried to insist him take it back but he would not take no for an answer. I had not felt such kindness in my entire time in Illinois being homeless. I am more fortunate than most because I do have a car at least. But just to be treated kindly without judgement and to feel human and cared for was a very amazing feeling to say the absolute least! And when I left Jan walked me to my car witch I felt a bit embarrassed being that it's filled with blankets and pillows and a tent and isn't the cleanest. I still felt no judgement and she was so kind still. I want to thank Eric and Jan again for there kindness and when I'm in a better position I know I will go in there and repay there kindness somehow... but that's my story and I just wanted to tell anyone that if you need anything relating to funeral services or even a notary this is the place to go! I could not express enough how kind and understanding they are and how they deserve all the blessings in the world! And I'm happy to say I made it to my appointment and I got my paper Illinois I.d! Maher Funeral Home was our TOP choice because of their outstanding staff, beautiful facility and the compassion expressed helping us prepare for my mother-in-law's passing. They provided excellent service during her wake including setting up our video tribute to her. We buried her out of state and they coordinated the travel logistics with the TN funeral home at their expense. My father battled cancer for 3+ years. While we knew it was likely inevitable, we put off the thought of making funeral arrangements until it was very close to the end. As it became closer, I reached out to a few funeral homes in the area and knew the minute I spoke with Bob, I knew we found our place. The Maher's have significant experience in this space and made an extremely difficult time much easier on the family. They acted with the utmost compassion and really did everything they could to help us though a tough process. The arrangements themselves were literally half the cost of other funeral homes in the area but that didn't take away from the quality of service. Maher is different from the traditional dark, dim funeral homes that can sometimes create an even sadder atmosphere. It's well lit and has multiple rooms - a large kitchen for snacks and beverages, a bedroom for younger family members, and other large, open rooms. While it was still incredibly sad, I believe getting away from the stuffy, traditional funeral home allowed us to stay a bit more upbeat. We were able turn the wake/funeral into a celebration of life, sharing stories about my dad over a few drinks in the kitchen, which is ultimately how he would've wanted it. Our son was killed by a DUI driver on July 4, 2021. Devastated, & sobbing we went to Maher Funeral Home close to where we live. Eric greeted us outside and showed us into a lovely conference room. He asked questions about us and our family, as a get to know you process and our preferences. We felt incapable of making decisions, but Eric masterfully lead us thru it step by step. Obviously when we are going through the loss of a loved one, the LAST thing we should have to deal with or worry about is dealing with shady or incompetent people at the funeral home. The guys at Maher funeral home did such an amazing job helping our grieving family through the entire process and helped us organize a moving and truly classic wake, service and tribute that was so beautiful I know my Mom was looking down from heaven with a smile on her face. They were professional, caring and went above and beyond from beginning to end. Very reasonable cost and even added beautiful extra flowers that we didn't ask for at their own expense. I recently had to work with Maher Funeral Home when my husband passed away unexpectedly at 43 years of age, from the moment I walked in I was overwhelmed with the warmth and compassion from Phil and Bob. They are truly my angels here on earth. They were so kind and understanding in guiding me in the right decisions to be made and I am grateful for the patience and care they extended to me and my family during a time when I could not even wrap my head around the situation I was facing. We used Maher a few years back when our Father passed and had a very good experience. When Mom passed recently we went back and had a completely different experience. I don't believe the gentleman handling our situation was organized. We had communications issues in the days following our initial meeting. Things like requesting an obituaray fell to the wayside. We were told one of 2 churches we inquired about for services was contacted and we were waiting on a call back. I had doubts the church was even called at that point, and called the Church myself and was told the Church was actually under construction and there was no chance for a service. The absolute worst part was that when we arrived at the private service, the flowers that we picked were never ordered. And the funeral home manager we dealt with didn't even realize it. I had to point it out to him. Due to covid, we had a private service and having no flowers, and no flowers at the graveside just made the day that much worse. Afterwards, I expected some type of formal apology. None came. 2 weeks later, when they called about the invoice, my husband explained we were waiting for an updated invoice due to the flowers having been forgotten. We were then contacted with an apology. And a $300 credit - honestly, so disappointed. I wish we had gone anywhere else.
