I am actually writing about the experience I had today, Jan 14th, with the sales lady. My husband…read moreand I entered the store and the sales person did not even bother to look up much less greet us. As we were wandering around the store looking for leather recliners we noticed the staff person pass by us, twice, without any recognition at all. As we were leaving we had to pass her and I asked a question as to how long the store had been there as we could not remember it from the past. I truly felt like I was bothering her...She responded like the question annoyed her? or? Anyway, I'm not sure but when we left the store my husband and I both commented on how rude we felt she was! There was only the 1 employee (her) that we noticed so maybe she was having a bad day but we really do not feel the need to return to Random Harvest. There are plenty of places we can seek out a leather recliner from but it was a shame as the experience left us with a bad "taste" in our mouths for the business.

The Hour specializes in new and vintage merchandise dedicated to one of my most favorite distractions: the cocktail. But not just any cocktail. Oh, no. The cocktail of the 40s, 50s, and 60s. A bygone era when Tom Collins was king, a circle dress hung in any self-respecting woman's closet, and the cocktail party was a regular weekend occurrence. (To drive home their commitment to this epoch, The Hour sells "Mad Men" box sets.) The vintage glass collection here is mesmerizing. I was particularly taken with the cocktail sets -- gorgeous pitchers or shakers plus the requisite sipping glasses -- and a little stand of silver and stone picks. Husband was particularly taken by the flasks, especially a masculine looking glass one with a mahogany brown leather cover. He also wanted to walk out with a fun set of golden Toledo cocktail swords. En garde! I spent a lot of time in the little back room that features cocktail party baubles and accessories any woman would covet, from sparkly rhinestone broaches and silk clutches, to exquisite cocktail rings with oversized flowers and feathered hair pieces. I picked up a funky portable purse hook with a fun, retro design...for some reason I've been wanting one for ages, and where better to buy one than at an independent neighborhood store? Not only is The Hour a completely absorbing place to browse and shop; not only is the merchandise impeccably selected and thoughtfully displayed; not only are the prices fair and the staff friendly; but they have also partnered with St. Coletta of Greater Washington, a non-profit that works with adults with intellectual disabilities. The Hour sells pretty glass coasters and trays made by the St. Coletta community, and for each purchase donates $5 back to St. Coletta. Supporting a small local business that, in turn, is giving back to my community? Yes, please.

Not some knockoff POS! Huzzah!!! And then I saw the price tag these scheisters have popped on it, calling it a "deal".... pfffffff. I actually dropped my phone, I was that stunned. $400 markup over what you'll pay direct from the manufacturer, INCLUDING shipping AND white glove service. And it's not as though so much time has passed since I bought them, either. I purchased my set in the last 90 days, but (sadly) also long after the Christmas and after-Christmas sales were over. So I reached out via message through Facebook marketplace to voice this, and my combined concern and displeasure at this considerable markup. Charging $1200 when the cost is just over $800... that's stretching the American Dream into Used Car Salesmen territory. Screenshots below for you to see their "customer service" hard at work. I have shared this information already with the MD and VA chambers of Commerce, the BBB, local counties to us both, etc.. My final stop is now to inform other potential consumers so that they may make balanced and informed decisions. Namaste.

Eames. Saarinen. Miller. Donnelly…read more Each of the designers listed above is unique. Each is an artist. But only one is still designing great furniture today. Daniel Donnelly's Modern Design Studio is itself a work of art. Mid-century modern aficionados will appreciate this showroom complete with clean lines and sleek designs. Guys and dolls with a keen eyes will spot some familiar mid-century vintage pieces gracing the floors here. From Heywood Wakefield to Herman MIller to Sarrinen, you'll see their original work scattered among the other swanky goods. The real gems in the showroom are the Daniel Donnelly originals, however. His furniture is, at times, a nod to the aforementioned designers, but his modern designs are certain to become classics in their own right. The back of the showroom is dedicated to custom orders and reupholstery/upholstery/textiles because this is a multi-functioning showroom. What? This is not an amateur you're dealing with. Daniel has a family background in antiques, he's been working in the D.C. design community for well over 2 decades and he's a nice guy. In all seriousness, his credentials check out. After meeting him earlier today, Daniel came across as being professional, friendly and enthusiastic about his work and wanting to create phenomenal modern furniture. Daniel Donnelly Modern Design Studio is on the outskirts of Old Town, Alexandria but this is not a showroom you want to pass up. Don't let the $$$ fool you, he's worth it. However, if you are looking for a studio that clearly has an eye for modern design this is your haven. The designer, Daniel Donnelly, searches out vintage pieces, production of vintage designs, refinishes in addition to building his own original designs. The diverse collection is flawless. I've visited on several occasions and dreamt that the studio was my home but on the last visit I had the opportunity to meet Daniel Donnelly. Such a nice gentleman with a passion for his work.
