Do they even clean?
Tina M.

I've recently moved to this neighborhood with no expectations. I've appreciated the fact that this Hopkins strip consists of small local businesses, which I whole heartedly love and support, but I must say that this shop solely survives on it's fair prices of meat. I've been here several times now and have received the same experience each time- not memorable. The only reason I continue to buy meat here is because of the prices. Chicken thighs are cheaper than Trader Joe's. In addition, I live down the street from here. The last few times my partner went and asked for them to trim the fat off, they simply packaged the meat without acknowledgment of the question. I went yesterday and asked the same to see if my experience would be different. I asked how much the thighs were and the person told me $3.99. I asked for 2 pounds. Right before they wrapped it up, I asked for them to trim the fat off. The guy looked at me annoyed, dumped the meat on the counter, and did a half-ass job at trimming. He handed me the package and charged me an extra dollar per pound. First off, this is a meat shop. A butcher! It's your job to cut meat how a customer asks! Not to mention that on their website, it literally says, "has an in-house butcher who cuts the meat to customer specifications". To conclude, the only great thing about this place, is the fair prices and convenience. Otherwise, I'd never come back here. Hoping the owners will care enough to check their Yelp and Google reviews and make a positive change to their business.

The bbq ribs from deli over spiced with too much pepper. They were better before. Only need a little bbq sauce.

They have great prices on ground turkey, locally sourced, and chicken liver for paté, what else could you ask for.

Hey I like some veggies and fruit and shrooms also but most of my diet is meat and seafood, as mama God intended it to be. It is awesome to have such a nice family owned butcher shop in town that is all about quality. I have purchased oysters, chicken, salmon, bacon and different cuts of meat over the years and all fresh and fantastic. They also have duck which I haven't purchased yet be cause I don't have my brothers insane duck recipe. That will change soon. The other items I buy are bones and oxtails for bone broth. In the freezer section are meaty oxtails, lamb and beef neck bones and sometimes knuckle bones. In the meat counter they have cut up leg bones. My number one place for bones. Store bought bone broth pales in compareson to my recipe and even though a takes a hot minute to make, it's worth it. The staff is great and very knowledgeable.

It will be worth the extra miles to return to my butcher in Berkeley. I trimmed 7.oz of thick fat and gristle off this, and now have to try and piece it together like a puzzle. I was a Chef! I know how to cut meat! I've added pictures of the Switcharoo cut he wrapped for me. I wanted this dinner to be a positive offering for family, closest friends and Vietnam Veterans my husband served with as we memorialized my husband.$170. 00 PSH! Way too much for this mess. Grand total of fat and gristle= 7.0 oz. What a heartbreaking scam cup and ball game

And after gazing at their product listing one day, I can kinda tell that they probably service a lot of ethnic shops like taquerias and small brick n mortars. You actually don't see or interact with any of their products directly. Upon opening their public door, there's a small office with a window. There's a current product sheet there with current pricing. You have to go by this and not with what you got in the past, or internet postings, as this sheet will be their current inventory and pricing. And pricing these days can vary greatly from week to week as well as supply. There's also a hanging bulletin board that has a lot of weekly specials. Once you've found something, you just place the order with the nice receptionist. She'll draw up a receipt and take your payment. CASH ONLY (for some reason). You then have to go outside where your car is and wait for a warehouse employee to bring it out to you. They are quick, like I've never had to wait more than 3 minutes. I've tried this place like 3 times now since I work nearby and just hit this up on my way home. Here are some finds: *In a very industrial zone of San Leandro. Close to the Costco but much deeper in industrial streets. Can't see it from a main road. Gotta go under an overpass then parallel a railroad track. Now that I know where it is at, it's a breeze. But first time looking it was a bit of a challenge. *All meats I've gotten thus far are frozen solid. But nicely frozen where you won't have to break anything separating things. Lots of things are well sealed in tight cryovac. So will have to spend time defrosting goods, can't go home and start cooking. But I just put whatever I'm planning on cooking in the fridge for a good day and just cook it the next day or so. And in what meats I've gotten even though frozen at one point is still of really good quality once defrosted. *Beef seems somewhat 'Choice grade' but I haven't seen any labeling to say so. Steaks I've tried are meatier and chewier than most grocery stores in my area, but in a good way. Feels more natural and not as 'water-y'. I've only tried 1 lb Rib Eye Steaks and thin cut NY strips so far, and have been more than pleased. Also tried some lamb shoulder chops and they too made for good dishes. *Pricing less than retail grocery stores unless there is mass grocery sale. Competive with Costco beef pricing but here you'll have to defrost something slowly. But you won't have to go through the Costco grind of getting aggravated in the parking lot, weaving through hundreds of people and waiting in life-sucking lines. I mean I'll still go to Costco, but if I can go to Costco less, then I've just freed up a big part of my personal time. *If I'm ever gonna feed a big group, big bbq, holiday party, big potluck etc., this will be a legit option. You can get cases of stuff here, whole ribeyes and briskets, cases of chicken/pork/lamb. They even have bacon, sausage and common cheeses on wholesale. And a big draw here is they have a ton of ethnic meats, which is why I'm sure they deal with a lot ethnic mom n pops. Tripe, suadero, beef cheeks, pork necks, livers all here. Probably won't find that stuff at Costco. *Warehouse hours, open like super early like 6-7 am and close by noon. Works for my hours but not for many others. Good fit for me, so they'll become a resource for me.

This locally owned establishment is a combination meat market and deli that takes great pride in its products and supporting the surrounding community. They are a friendly, family-owned store that sells select cuts of meat and sides. I do recommend calling ahead to inquire and reserve for a large order, because certain items, like the red potato salad, garlic bread, and tri tip, do go fast, along with the frozen old-fashioned pies. (Grandmother would be proud) However, as I said, this review is more about their deli, which I believe serves one of the best hamburgers, tri-tip sandwiches, and steak sandwiches in the area. (This is coming from a fan of Chef Jeff's smashburgers in Antioch.) Now my favorite is their hamburgers because they're perfectly thick, juicy, seasoned to perfection, and cooked the way every hamburger should be, for a reasonable price compared to what you might get at McDonald's today or even at those fast-food places near Sand Creek outdoor mall. You cannot beat this place. In addition, you can select the type of bread, the cheese or cheeses, and toppings. And if you like it with bacon, you're in the right spot, no thin wafer strips of bacon, we're talking about thick-cut, making it so that you can taste it when eating this burger. Add in a chip or one of their house-made sides and a drink, and take it to the park for a nearby picnic with your favorite person or your family. You cannot go wrong stopping here on a Saturday. Seating is limited but your in Brentwood locate a park.

With the rise of modern restaurants and designs in the area, Nash Cafe remains that lovely, petite restaurant with very sweet elderly staff. As much as I adore their interior and atmosphere, their food did not hit the way I wished it did. Their potstickers tasted like those frozen grocery potstickers that you microwave. Their zhajiang noodles lacked taste and their table-side chili garlic oil condiment was very bland. There's pork belly skewers were tasty and crispy, but the price did not match the serving size. I did enjoy the Wuhan Dry Sesame Noodles, which was surprisingly their cheapest dish we ordered. Maybe I'm just unlucky and the dishes I ordered weren't their best?

Parking is a little difficult since it's on Shattuck Ave. Decided to order a whole bunch of skewers to try: beef, lamb, chicken, pork belly, beef tongue, chicken wing, gizzard, and momo bun. We decided to go for hot and the server warned us that it is spicy. We like spicy and told her it's fine. Always a good sign when someone stops you from ordering spicy. We were intrigued. They did not disappoint. Sure enough, the skewers had a lot of seasoning, flavor, and spice. Some of my favorites were chicken and pork belly (they had a nice crispy outside) and juicy in the inside. The beef and lamb skewers were pretty standard. Momo bun was good as well. Gizzard, I was told was good but I'm not a fan out the texture myself. Overall, the skewers were good. They did not skimp on the seasoning, which was appreciated. Now to the noodles. Honestly the noodles were okay at best. Chongqing spicy noodles didn't pack the same heat as I'm accustomed to. The broth didn't have a lot of flavor. Wuhan dry sesame noodles was the favorite of the table but I wasn't a fan of the richness and creaminess of the sesame. The zhajang noodles lacked flavor. Overall great place for skewers, I would skip on the noodles though.

Downtown Berkeley

"Hot Pot, Mongolian Grill style, in downtown Berkeley"…read more Came here on Black Friday evening at 6:45pm, and it was pretty empty in the restaurant. The place is BRIGHTLY lit, but I confess I would have been confused on protocol without coming with two past diners. There are some large bowls on the side and tongs, and you stack the meats, veggies, and starches from the adjacent fridge/ freezers in the bowl as you walk in, then hand it to the cashier and note which broth you'd like. They then cook it up and bring it out to you. Because they cook it with materials you picked (rather than then giving you ingredients and you cooking it), that's why I call it "Mongolian grill style". The process was a bit difficult-- I don't know Mandarin, and some choices were only labeled in Mandarin (or were clearly mislabeled). For instance, I saw something that looked like fake crab meat sticks, but later discovered it had some sort of meat filling that was not obvious. I picked as best I could though, and everything looked to be in good shape/ quality. The choices were broad-- many veggies and meats, some starches like ramen or other noodles, etc. I got the signature spicy with a setting at mild, and it had some zing but was very doable for me. One of my dining partners had the tomato and asked for "no" space, and she got what she requested-- said it tasted like Campbell's tomato soup. Meanwhile others with us got the Sichian spicy and were sweating hard. The food took maybe 10 minutes to come out, which was fine. The price was about what you'd expect for the downtown Berkeley area-- not "cheap" but reasonable for what it was-- cost about $150 for the 5 of us. Overall, I enjoyed it. Not something I see myself craving and running back to, but a decent choice in the area.

It was our first time, but the process was pretty straightforward grab a bowl and tongs by the entrance and start picking from a great variety of meats, veggies, and more. Only downside was that a few ingredients in the freezer weren't fully stocked, but honestly, still an easy 5 stars from me.
