For anybody who likes reading about transcendent donut experiences and is putting off more productive pursuits: Some say I have a donut problem; I say I got 99 problems but donuts ain't one. In the past year or so I've scarfed down doughy delectables from at least these spots (sugar-induced blackouts may have caused me to forget a few) in San Francisco: All Stars (Clement) Bob's (old & new spots on Polk) Bob's on Baker Donuts & Things Donut World Dynamo George's Donuts & Merriment Hahdough Happy Donuts (24th/Church) The Jelly Donut Johnny Doughnuts Le Bonta Italiane Magic Donuts & Coffee The Mochi Donut Shop (Clement) Mochill Mochidonut (Japantown) My Happy Donut Ocean Malasada Trish's Mini Donuts Twisted Donuts & Coffee Vio Handcrafted Pastries (Outer Sunset Farmer's Market) Heck, I've recently found reliable options at Safeway and Lucky in a pinch. Yet, despite all of my donut adventures, I somehow didn't make it to Magical Donuts in Mission Bay's Parklab Gardens (across the street from SPARK Social) until late February 2026. As it turns out, I saved the best for last. Like, I love Magical Donuts so much that I'd seriously consider joining the gatekeeping dark side if Tomoko and Simon (more on them below) weren't so worthy of our support and if I didn't want you, fellow sweet toothian, to experience donut bliss. SERVICE When I walked up around 8 a.m. on a fateful, cool Saturday morning I was warmly greeted by Simon and Tomoko, who cheerfully offered recommendations, answered questions, and shared little nuggets about the various styles on offer. If they didn't have better things to do, I could have chatted with them all morning. THE GOODS As you can see from the photo, I sampled a range of styles. I was floored by each and will have them all again, but given how confident I am in the skill and care put into everything made here I'll probably try an entirely different selection next time. Other big takeaways: Just the right amount of sweetness and chew. And you can actually taste different flavors. Too often at other spots the glazes look different but taste nearly the same and every dang donut has the same over fried texture. Everything: dough, glazes, fillings, and cream cheese frosting all tasted fresh and clean enough for Stankonia-era OutKast. Not a drop of grease to be found, and yet not a single donut was remotely dry. None of these donuts, not even the fritter, felt "heavy" in the way that they can and often do. Each had just the right heft to reflect its style. These donuts are just the right size. I'd seen the "one-bite happiness" tagline prior to my visit and slightly worried that I was buying a ticket to a "Honey, I Shrunk the Donuts" Dynamo-like experience. Nope. And also not Johnny Doughnuts-like slabs that I sometimes tire of before I can finish. The chocolate frosted and sugar shell donuts are filled to order. On the day of my visit custard, lemon, and raspberry fillings were available (and yes, I tried all three). The variety is amazing, and includes gluten-free and vegan options for those who partake. PARKING & TRANSIT I've heard enough horror stories about Mission Bay parking that I don't dare drive there, so I can't speak to how easy it is to find a spot. I can say that these donuts are so good that I just might risk a ticket in the future. I can happily report that the 22 drops off and picks up feet from the Magical truck, and that the T and other bus lines stop nearby as well. And hey, given how many of these donuts will be calling your name maybe getting a few steps in before and/or after isn't a bad idea either. I liked the balance of the lemon peach cobbler cake donut, as the dab of jelly compliments the crumbly cobbler bits. I'll be honest -- I'm not usually a donut person. I don't crave them, I don't go out of my way for them... but Magical Donuts at Spark Social? That's a whole different story. They truly live up to their name -- every bite feels like a little bit of magic. I'd give this spot 4.5/5! Magical donuts is a pretty solid spot! We got their chocolate crumb rise and their cinnamon crumb cake. Personally we enjoyed the cake donut version more than the rise donut. It's the baking soda that brings a more dense, chewy, SOFT consistency. The rise donut was great in flavor but more donut consistency - airy from the yeast. I'd give the cake donut 5/5 and the rise donut 4/5. Most recently, I asked Tomoko to cater cinnamon rolls for my daughter's first birthday and they were beyond excellent. Truly amazing. Old-fashioned cinnamon rolls with butter, cinnamon sugar, and topped with thick cream cheese frosting.
