The store is huge-- mostly filled with folding chairs and tables for their various events. However, they also have 2 shelves full of demo games so you can grab a coffee from next door (it is beside a Starbucks) then sit down and try something out-- for free! The game selection isn't enormous, but it is decent; they have a wide range of styles and types including board games, card games, accessories for collectables/ collections (like storing Magic decks). They even have a clearance section which included some "hurt" boxes that were still sealed. You could grab a good bargain there! I was looking for level counters for a game I already owned and the staff member knew the game and although they didn't have counters, he suggested I use D10s (dice). He then showed me my options at the counter (small things were in a display case). In the front window there was a large calendar displaying all the regular and special events happening that month. They have regular gaming nights Sunday (any games), as well as hosting other games-specific nights (such as for Magic: The Gathering). read more

I like Magic Stronghold. There is no better hub for Magic the Gathering anywhere in the Vancouver area. If you really want to test yourself as a player you will find some of the most talented Magic players anywhere in the world here. With that, of course, comes the possibility of a negative experience as some people are just jerks. The thing about that though is the store staff as well as the owner are some of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet and they do the absolute best they can to provide and maintain a positive store atmosphere. They all really care about your experience, especially on a social level with other players. This all being said, one of the things that irks me about Magic Stronghold is the extremely long wait times if you are trying to make a purchase - especially if it's single magic cards. Now, this is not the fault of the staff. If you watch them you can see how hard they work, how much stress they are under and how they try to manage what seems like a thousands tasks at once. They do the absolute best they can, but it seems like the store is always under staffed. Nobody should have to wait 30+ minutes to make a purchase. I feel like maybe if there were more people working, or at the very least some sort of organization of who does what task it might go along way to ease the headache of trying to make a purchase. Again, these are just my recent experiences. Maybe I'm going at the wrong time. Maybe I'm unlucky. I do highly recommend Magic Stronghold. Not just for Magic. Almost every TCG is supported there. They constantly have events running (which you can see on their website). They have so many board games for sale. There's so much table space you can camp out for the entire day, meet new people and have fun. OK so this is the first games /cards store I've walked into and it was a little overwhelming since I had no idea what the difference was between certain series or games, etc but the customer service was awesome! Super friendly, helpful, willing to explain things and help me out when I bought the wrong thing twice, and the quality of the Magic the gathering cards I ended up with was awesome. Price was great too. Also appreciated they have their own in-store bathrooms which I could see would be great for patrons who spend time there for game competitions. Definitely recommend!! read more

Considered the center HQ for Magic: The Gathering community, but really I am gonna call it the center of the Table Top community. It is NOT a comic book store, it is a TABLE TOP STORE!! The geek community here grew as the move happened. Other trading card games happen here all the time as well and LARGE groups of D&D people roll around here too, and Star Wars Armada are here as well. This store has expanded in ALL ways of geek community which is a good way to expand. This place has TONS of food places around if you get hungry too, and all the food places within the area always give discounts to those who hang out at Magic Stronghold too! Thanks for making partnership with other stores guys to make this place awesome! The staff here are friendly, and will help you if you need it. They are friendly to regulars, and will try to carry a smile when needed. Every single one of them are a geek on their own, playing all the games and will help and explain everything. Their board game collection is HUMONGOUS, and parts and some of the community are always there to help you out with something and learning to get into something new. There are always a demo copy to try out a game, and the staff here are happy to just have a group of people here to hang out, bring a board game and just play. Pretty much the center of the Magic: The Gathering community in Vancouver, with the biggest selection of cards, events going on, etc. Chances are, if you play Magic, you're here a lot. Previously these folks were based in a slightly creepy part of Burnaby, so this location is much nicer and also much easier to get to: take the Skytrain and get off at Patterson and walk over, or take the #19 bus from elsewhere and there's s stop right across the street. If you're buying a lot of Magic singles I might choose one of the less hectic nights there ( i.e. not Friday ) to pop by. This place can get super busy! read more

I have been coming too this card shop for years, maybe it was them knowing about my relationship with others but they allowed it to strain our relationship professionally. I went to the store with 3 cards worth about 2$ and one card worth about 5$, they put the 1 card in the 2$ slot and put the other 2 in the 10 cent slot (because their deck staples, idk) and the 5$ at 1.25. After I took back the 3 cards they undervalued (they pressured me, of course), they gave me back the rest of the cards in the trade-in saying they weren't worth it (an hgss unleashed rare candy worth 5$ out of stock on their site, 2 luxury ball's worth 2$ each also out of stock on their site, and 2 cards worth 50 cents interestingly enough also out of stock on their site) and proceeded to give me even more rank attitude when I asked him what 2$ worth of trade in equalled to mana rocks, totally unprofessional, and tbh, I haven't really been back here in over a year, outside of GP's I don't see why I should buy singles here (all I buy is singles). So if obviously you just want to rip me off, I'll go elsewhere. read more

Magic Stronghold is as good as a game shop can get, and the Magic player's dream. Unless you're purchasing singles and have to wait for a staff member to personally complete your list of cards, sealed product is prioritized to the front of the line unless anyone else is making a purchase. The store's credit system is a boon to any gamer who can hold their own in their respective area of expertise, and the 20% in store credit bonus on product traded in allows you to keep your line of credit pretty healthy whether you play sealed or limited format games competitively. I am also quite certain they are the only store in the lower mainland with a completely open buylist. But maybe you aren't the competitive type and just want to make an awesome kitchen table Magic deck. Well the staff are excellent at helping customers brew up their own decks and have an encyclopedic knowledge of cards to help them get there, just come in when you'll be able to get their undivided attention. They're friendly, fine retailers, and have an immense understanding of many different games among them, you will assuredly be able to find yourself an expert in what you are trying to play at Stronghold. Community is a big part of the Stronghold vibe, and a serious improvement over the old store is the amount of space they have to play. At any time of any day you can find people to play with, and everyone is always quite friendly. The age range and experience of players is wide and more often than not overlooked when you sit across the table from anyone playing a game. Easy to access by transit, and with a Starbucks that stays open late just for players right around the corner, it really is hard to beat what Stronghold has to offer in terms of games stores regardless of what you play. read more

BEWARE THESE GUYS WILL RIP YOU OFF! Went in to trade cards and got comic book store guy snobbery. These thieves will low-ball your trades claiming condition issues - even for brand new cards. At the same time they will expect you to pay mint price for their trashed stock. This store has gone downhill since the move. even though the staff are the same, ever since the store has moved to this new location, the level of attentiveness from the staff has been poor. many of the products go out of stock like penny sleeves and sealed magic product. the store while large and spacious often fill up for casual and regulation play. stronghold primarily deals with magic the gathering, but also sells pokemon, yugioh, 5rings, vangaurd, weib, etc. the store is easily accessable via transit, #19 stanley park/metrotown. there is free parking around the area and paid underground parking. i would prefer if stronghold actually keep staff at the tills and counter at all times because lately, youd have to actually flag one down like a waiter to take your order. read more

Holy shit do they have a large selection of games. I came on a D&D night, however, they were still cool about me browsing and checking out some games. I have some friends who play D&D and this is where apparently people go. I did pick up some games for myself since I have been obsessed lately with playing games at my local coffee shop. A few times I've been here while it was busy, traded cards in for value onto my "account" which is a system they use to track any cards which you trade in but don't exchange for other product, only to come back later and find out that money was not added to my account. Down about 40 dollars at this point and none of the staff believe me. There's too many customers for any of them to remember what happened. If you trade in cards for store credit make sure you stand there until they show you the added value on your account, or just don't do it while they're busy. read more

Been coming here for the last few months since moving to Vancouver, decent selection of board games and collectibles but Magic: the Gathering is my main hobby and this place is a dream come true. Great collection of cards, sets, and accessories (although they occasionally run out, but what can you do). Prices are very reasonable - generally comparable and sometimes even better than buying online. The staff has been super friendly and welcoming to me even though I'm new to the community. Attended the pre-release for Fate Reforged last night and can safely say it went really well for a midnight release. If your into boardgames or magic the gathering (I am sure they have other TCGs as well) this store has it all & a really solid staff that know pretty much everything regarding MTG. They also run a bunch of events during the week & weekend so more than likely they will have an event or 2 that your interested in. I can't recommend this store highly enough ever since they moved to the new store its a really good store! read more
