I have ordered the Magic Cup frozen desserts for my husband multiple times as he has Parkinson's and dysphasia and these are safe for him to eat. However, they are expensive and so is the shipping. Our last order arrived late and was only partially frozen. The dry ice on top in the crate was completely dissolved. The crate was on a FedEx truck for several days. FedEx driver never rings the bell or knocks either to let you know order has arrived. Customer service not helpful. Not sure if I will be ordering from this company again. read more

I've ordered from Magic Kitchen maybe half a dozen times, and here are my impressions. FIrst off, I really like that there is no subscription required. All you need to do is order at least $50.00 worth of meals and you're good to go. Shipping is prompt and your order will arrive packed in dry ice, in a large polystyrene foam container (which is itself wrapped in plastic). Not the most environment-friendly packaging. Secondly, using their website to place orders is a snap, and I also like how they will email you discount codes on a regular basis. I've also been given a quarterly rebate (in the the form of a discount code) based on the amount of my orders during that time -- kind of a loyalty bonus. Finally, the meals are OK, and I like that they are generally healthy and on the light side calorie-wise. Although they are pricier, the Signature meals are where you will find the highest quality entrees. Some meals can be prepared in the microwave, while others require cooking in the oven (at least based on the instructions printed on each container). It's also convenient that their meals can be kept frozen and not have to be consumed with a seven day window. Overall, I think that Magic Kitchen is definitely worth considering as an option to add some variety to your diet. Some of their meals are better than others, though. read more

I have ordered meals from Magic Kitchen five or six times. With each order I get good meals based on what I selected. They are easy to warm up and serve. I order the complete meals and desserts and I am very happy with the selection they provide and it is much cheaper than going to a restaurant for a meal. Overall, I was very happy with the shipping delivery schedule and the quality in which my meals arrived. The Penne with Meatballs ($7.50) came in individually pouched microwave bags, which I preferred much more, and makes it just too easy to have such a great-tasting meal. In fact, that penne with meatballs is a "must-buy" if you are going to place an order, and I would throw in the chicken parmesan single ($9.99) too. The Shrimp and Garlic Vermicelli was very good, and I appreciate that the chefs took the tails off the shrimp. The pasta was still firm and too mushy from being frozen and reheated. The serviing size was a little on the small side but it was good value for $14. The crab cakes are good, and worth the money at $14 per meal. However, this is not a pure lump crab meat crab cake like you might expect in a restaurant. It tasted more like canned crab meat. The price is very economical for what you get. If you are purist, you may find the texture of heating a crab cake in the microwave a little off, but for a weekday evening meal, it's a good selection. The Shrimp Enchiladas was tasty, but the side vegetable blend was awesome. The shrimp were plentiful and reheated perfectly. Another good value for $13.50, in my opinion. read more

My family sent this when my aged relatives were visiting along with my very aged Mum and I was overwhelmed. The food is marvelous ! The eggplant parmigiana is as good as any top restaurant, the barley pilaf tastes homemade, and the spinach pasta was excellent. The food was so good that when the relatives left, after cleaning out the freezer, we ordered more! They will forever be a staple in our house! read more

My wife works weird hours so she's rarely home to cook for me. We tried this place a few years ago and have been loyal customers ever since. The shipping was fast and food quality was amazing!! My recommendations: Lamb shank: normally, we don't eat lamb. But this dish was great! Not too minty, very juicy and tender. Anything beef: I've tried the Wellington, osso buco, and the short ribs in red wine sauce. Everything has been fall apart tender and cooked to perfection. You can't go wrong with anything beef! Chicken pot pie: I always end up ordering a couple of single serving chicken pot pies because they are delicious. The crust is buttery and flakey, and the filling has huge chunks of chicken and veggies. Panna cotta: I'm not a huge panna cotta fan, but like the chicken pot pie, we always throw in an order of panna cotta because my wife absolutely LOVES the raspberry flavor. (Happy wife, happy life, right?) Overall, I give this website five stars because it's waaaaay easier (and healthier) having Magic Kitchen bundles in my freezer than going out for fast food five nights a week. I had ordered meals for my older father-in-law whose wife was out of town. Sorry to say the meals looked nothing like the pictures advertised . Some vegetables were missing in the meals. One meal had a 1/4 inch of rice and all portions were very small. Wish there were more options for this type of precooked meal. read more

I ordered a sampling of their foods to consider giving gift boxes to my parents. I have tried the zucchini muffins YUM! The broccoli mushroom soup was tasty. I did add some riced broccoli to it and would use it as a soup base with leftover veggies added to it. I absolutely love the spinach mushroom lasagna, and the eggplant parm was good too. I don't eat beef or pork so can't review those. Overall, I think these are good meals that make a nice gift. I will keep my freezer stocked so those nights when we don't feel like cooking, we have something handy to whip up. Much better for you than fast food! read more

I'm the caregiver for a patient with medical conditions that require a specialized diet. Since I'm neither a great cook nor an expert on nutrition, I decided to scour the Internet for meal delivery services that provide meals for individuals with special dietary needs. Magic Kitchen is one of them. It provides meals for "average" people (those without special needs) as well as those with special needs. The special meals are designed by professional dietitians to accommodate appropriate restrictions on, say, sodium, potassium, and carbohydrates for various medical conditions. The meals are prepared in Kansas City, KS, and shipped to customers via FedEx Home Delivery on Mondays through Wednesdays. You'll receive the meals usually within 3 days of shipment. The meals are packed into thick-walled Styrofoam (expanded polystyrene) coolers with dry ice, and remain frozen until you receive them, even if the delivery is delayed two days, as happened with my recent order just prior to Christmas 2015. FedEx Home Delivery is generally reliable, though there were hiccups during the holiday season. Still, FedEx's tracking system is superior to UPS' (FedEx gives intermediate checkpoints as the delivery truck traverses the country), so you get a general sense of the location of your order. Meals that accommodate special dietary needs can seem "tasteless" to the average American palate. For example, a renal diet requires low sodium and potassium, so meals for renal patients will taste very bland (very low salt) to most everyone. However, your taste buds will adjust within a couple weeks to the new diet, and you'll start tasting the REAL food, rather than the salt or sauces that mask or overpower the flavor of the food. The patient I care for, as well as I, have found this to be the case with the renal meals. (I'm not a renal patient, but I figure I'd also benefit from low sodium, potassium, etc.) With this mind, I'd say the meals are good in two respects -- They meet patients' specific dietary needs, and they microwave pretty well. Magic Kitchen prepares these frozen meals probably as well as frozen meals can be prepared. However, let's face it. Frozen foods generally don't taste as good as or have the same natural texture of fresh food. So, Magic Kitchen's meals are appreciated by patients with special dietary needs, but they aren't the end-all, be-all of home delivered meals. I have chosen to make Magic Kitchen a "backup" to the meals of a local fresh-meal delivery service that offers renal meals. Their meals are fresh, not frozen, so are superior in taste and texture. It's more expensive than Magic Kitchen (as you'd expect), but it's worth the extra cost. The Styrofoam/polystyrene coolers are a MAJOR PAIN to deal with. I thought I'd have no problem donating them to local charities, selling them on eBay, or offering them for free local recycling via Freecycle After absolutely no success through these venues, I was fortunate to find a firm (the subsidiary of a local garbage dump) that does accept and recycle polystyrene. Considering I live in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, I couldn't believe there was only one venue to dispose of the coolers, short of just dumping them in the trash. On that basis, I imagine it would be nearly impossible in smaller communities to do anything with the coolers, other than to simply dump them. I suggest first-time customers call Magic Kitchen's customer service department to see how they can save on shipping charges, which can easily top $30 per shipment if not for special promotional offers. In conclusion, Magic Kitchen is a reasonably priced meal delivery service that offers well prepared meals. It is especially good for individuals with special dietary needs. Be realistic, though: Magic Kitchen's meals are frozen and will not be as pleasing to the palate as freshly prepared meals. Still, it's worth considering if you're too busy to cook good meals, can't cook specialized meals, or hate to cook ... and can afford the service. read more

I am a very satisfied customer. I ordered many items from this company to be sent to my Father who is now alone after the recent death of my Mom. There was an error in the address of which UPS did not alert anyone of and the food was kept over the weekend at the UPS depot and defrosted. I ordered a bundle of family-sized meals for a friend who lost a child. The meals were ordered in time so that they would arrive when her family came into town for the funeral. However, Magic Kitchen never gave the package containing the meals to FedEx to be shipped, so the meals were late, which caused her even more stress. In addition, they were out of one of the entrees that I ordered (although it would have presumably been in stock on the day that it was supposed to be shipped) and tried to surreptitiously substitute one of the desserts that was part of the bundle with a less expensive dessert. They were not apologetic and did not attempt to offer any refund. read more

Have been ordering from here for several years, many orders. Expensive but tastier and convenient alternative to standard take-out or Stouffers. Food tastes homemade, usually B+. Their food in prior years and older recipe dishes are better than recent "new" dishes, which I keep trying, hoping to find another favorite, but the new stuff seems more bland, unsure if they changed chef or shipping origin location or that is what people want now. Had off/on problems with food almost not frozen enough but customer service was responsive to rectify and refund. Website can be flakey but has improved. Favorites are Chicken Kiev ( very buttery, filling portions) , chicken Ana Luisa, magic meatloaf, lamb shank, turkey hunter stew, barley vegetable pilaf side, panna cotta dessert ( regular or pistachio), green bean side, apple sage stuffing side, and all their soups are hearty and flavorful. So far, not impressed. I purchased a few groupon for $20 for $40 worth of food. I have a relative who is ailing, so I thought it would be great to send her some food. They live one town over from where this company does business, so I thought they would be getting some fresh cooked meals. Wrong! They ship out of the Missouri! AND, they charge a shipping fee of $20 per order. Uggh.....no discount there! I called the place and the woman on the phone did give me a coupon code for free shipping for my orders. I then went an ordered the food. I split my order between my relative and myself. For myself, I had to specifically ask for the food to be delivered on Monday rather than today -- sure enough, it came today instead. That was a bummer as I wasn't around all day, didn't want it shipped to me today. The food was frozen when I opened it up, but all the dry ice was gone. What would have happened if I came back tomorrow? My food would have been defrosted. So, when I opened up the package, I found a sad presentation of the food. Its all shrink wrapped. Additionally, all the food is miniscule. What they consider 4 servings is really 2 servings. (We are not big eaters.) Additionally, their price for their side dishes are astronomical. 8 or 9 bucks for a small side of rice -- that seriously feeds one? I have not tasted the food yet. That is next..... read more

I tried this service for the first time recently. I ordered meal plan one primarily because it had beef bourguignon on the menu...I received 7 meals but not the beef bourguignon. I received substitutes for 3 others as well. The basil chicken was good. The others that I have tried so far have been disappointing: the "sauce" on the Chicken Marsala was like soupy water. The portion size of the meat is very small...probably appropriate for an older female. Unlike most people who live in New Orleans I don't like to cook so was looking for a nutritious and appetizing way to have food delivered. Having frozen food delivered from California that was not especially appetizing was not the answer. read more

We use these as back-up meals for when we're busy and need to be able to pull something out of the freezer and feed the kids quickly.
