I grew up with the original Magic Fountain in Warren, Nj. Unfortunately, they no longer exist. I had that craving again for some really good homemade ice cream and I remembered there was a Magic Fountain in Summit, NJ. This place is nothing fancy, it's your basic walk up style place your order by window. Magic Fountain is known for their soft serve vanilla or chocolate ice cream and if you really want to take a walk on the wild side you can have the vanilla/chocolate swirl plain dipped or topped with anything your heart desires! They make the thickest and most luscious shakes around.If that wasn't enough they serve hard ice cream too. My favorite is the pistachio it has real pieces of pistachios in it. I also love the Maple Walnut with hunks of walnuts and the maple buttery taste. I had mine in a sundae with hot fudge and fresh whipped cream not the fake stuff. This sundae took me back to when I was a child reminiscent of the Jersey Shore. This place does get very busy and on weekends you will find long lines but its worth the wait. This place has been my jam since the 90s, back then they used to have ninja turtle pops with gum eyeballs however my go to is their soft chocolate ice cream topped with hard shell chocolate on top a safe bet for those who have gluten sensitivity! I have yet to find a place that makes soft chocolate this damn good! The person that owns this must be rakin in the dough while we locals have to look at this eye sore which hasn't been upgraded since the time it changed names from DQ back in the 70s. I remember in high school, once I got my driver's license, we used to come here for lunch (ice cream for lunch is always the best!). When the weather breaks, this place is raking in the dough. Plus it's close to the schools. I see this as the ultimate kids hangout place but I could also see adults and families spending time here as well. The smooth, creamy and dense vanilla soft serve is what we're attracted to. By itself, it's amazing and with other ingredients, even better. My personal favorite is a small cup of vanilla with strawberries. The strawberries topping is not overwhelming sweet of which I would expect but I guess the vanilla and the strawberries balances each other out. Because of the thick density of the soft serve, a small size is good or go large and share with your spouse. My other favorite is the cookies n'cream flurry....which is like a shake but thicker and you eat it with a spoon. just heavenly! The place looks run down and the lines are long but isn't that the charm of a local ice cream shop? Prices - reasonable given the area and to the competition. The parking can also be tricky, as the lot is tiny and the street parking nearby is limited and unpredictable. The atmosphere is non-existent, its a roadside shack with a few ordering windows. Despite all these cons, I felt like I would be remiss if I didn't give them the full 5 star rating, the ice cream is truly incredible and one of the few times that something has lived up to the hype. This is a must stop whenever I am in Summit. The manager/owner is really cool. He understands that children have a proclivity for dropping their entire cone 2 seconds after purchasing it. The line intersperses titans of industries with their kids and day workers with theirs. Magic fountain is a great place with many options for desserts. I am a regular customer and I am usually content with my experience. Tonight, I decided to go on a usual ice cream run for myself and my family and I waited in line for about 20-25 minutes plus walking there for ten minutes. When I went to ask if my order was ready i was already waiting about 30-35 minutes (not the worst wait time I've seen). The worker responds with "It will be about another hour." This was terrible news and in that moment I knew I would write this review. I always see many workers there (7-8 usually), but it feels like 5 of them sit there and do nothing.
