There are places to eat, a boots chemist, costa (although no in-store seating) an information desk and a left luggage office which was fantastic. I was greeted by a lovely man who informed me that it was £3 for an hour or £9 for 24 hours which I think is very reasonable and very handy. In the station you will find statues of Ken Dodd and Bessie Braddock which are fab. There aren't many seating available but it seems on a sunny day most people sit out front on the steps. But I would rate this station 'very good' and felt comfortable and safe.

The station is fairly basic, but it is only a small category B station with 5 active platforms, an underpass with lift/stair access connects the platforms. I was surprised that this station didn't have ticket-gates, and there were no staff until getting to the platform, but the staff did seem friendly and happy to help, there was also a good amount of seats and a waiting room in the place, where you can wait before boarding a service. The facilities inside the station are minimal, but with it being a short walk away from the town centre (I like the map outside which gives you a rough time and direction to get to the DW Stadium and town centre), this isn't too bad. Bus services also stop outside. 3* - Nothing too excited, pretty average station, which provides a good number of services which is better than many towns of a similar size to Wigan gets.

One gripe I do always have about Blundellsands train station is that it's sort of plonked in the…read moremiddle of nowhere (as far as a mere Formbyite like myself is concerned). It's basically sat in the middle of a load of estates and I nearly always manage to get lost en route to there when I'm getting the train back home. Location issues aside, Blundellsands is a fairly pleasant station these days. It has recently undergone a small refurbishment which included the installation of indoor seating areas, ideal for those chilly winter nights when you're waiting for the last train and you're looking to avoid the drunken old man who is just dying to tell you his life story and what life choices you should make. With the recent refurbishment also came the electronic boards that inform you how long a wait you have before the next train (can you even remember a time when we didn't have them? It seems positively prehistoric to think of a time when you had to guess whether you'd just missed a train or not) and the little kiosk just outside is a good place to stop off for a drink or snack if you're stuck waiting for a while.

The lines leads from Southport to Hunts Cross and while there are no direct intercity links, the destinations include major links such as Sandhills for connections to Ormskirk and Kirkby, Liverpool Central for connections to Lime Street and the Wirral Line and connecting trains to Preston and Blackpool can be caught from Southport. Blundellsands has recently undergone quite extensive renovation with the original waiting rooms being heated, new cycle storage, a customer toilet and a vast overhaul of the parking facilities, which are free to use. There is one automated ticket machine, a payphone and a small kiosk with all the essentials. My only criticism of Blundellsands Station is the disabled facilities, while there is a ramped subway enabling access of prams and cycles, I don't feel this is good enough for disabled customers. My grandmother s wheelchair bound and finds the ramp far to steep to navigate; when using the train we are forced to continue to the next station whose two railway lines are separated by the platform, change trains and come back again! Considering the number of retirement and nursing homes surrounding Blundellsands this inability to access the station is absurd. The staff at Blundellsands are invariably pleasant and sociable, they have worked at this station for years and always remember a face.!

The station has four platforms, and there are some covered areas where you can wait for the trains. When I was there at 8 AM on a Monday, the station wasn't manned, so keep that in mind if you need assistance or want to buy tickets in person. The signage could be improved -- the platforms aren't clearly indicated, and I had to walk along the platform to figure out where I was and to find the display panels showing train information.

The station is down a small road off tunnel street and the decor is stonewall and it looks quaint and small more like the type of train station you would expect to find in a village in the country rather than a metropolitan city such as Liverpool. The staff are always polite and helpful and there is no shortage of information regarding your travel that they will give to you. So to summarise theres nothing standout about this place but I have always found that the people make it great and it is a reliable and convenient place to travel from.

It may not be the central station in town, however it could do with a makeover since it appears dull to say the least. It also has a lonely atmosphere as it has a long and wide stretch of tunnel. Especially if you're on your own during less peak times, it feels quite dodgy. In terms of finding your way around, it can sometimes be puzzling with the lack of sign-posting and assistance. It does feel as though you've been swallowed up in this subterranean world. Central station or James Street station would be a better bet, which are not so far in the city centre even if it means walking a few extra minutes.

Preston railway station in Preston, Lancashire, England, is a major station on the West Coast Main…read moreLine, roughly half-way between London Euston and Glasgow Central - it is around 200 miles or 2 1/4 hours or so from both - that being said is right in the middle of the two, it is quite an important station, operated by Virgin Trains but I'd even go as far to say this is one of the worst Category B stations I've visited (On the contrast I find the likes of Brighton and Stockport to be the best) The station is mainly used by Virgin Trains who provide routes to destinations such as London, Glasgow and Blackpool but is also used by other services such as Northern (Slow train into Manchester and Greater Manchester towns as well as offering services to Blackpool, York and Liverpool) and TPExpress (fast services into Manchester Piccadilly in 36 minutes, Manchester Airport and Glasgow/Edinburgh. Caledonian Sleeper trains also pass through here, once per day in both directions (London/Scotland) For a nine platform station, it still feels pretty small, unlike virtually every other main train station which is the main one of a city/category B and above there isn't a WHSmith - nor is there much at the station nonetheless other than a few coffees stands with little seating, and a Starbucks which couldn't serve food OR COFFEE! (Come on... are they called Starbucks tea or Starbucks coffee?) The ticket area is pretty small and it does close even at busy times in the evening - meaning it can be hard to find a member of staff. When I did find a staff member they did seem friendly enough even though they had thousands of football fans singing after watching Manchester City defeat Preston North End 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup. It is in a good location for the centre, being only a short walk away from the shopping area, and two stops on the bus from the bus station with cabs outside the station. 2* - Poor facilities in the station but a good location, with friendly enough staff for the extra star.

The station and all trains calling at it, are operated by Northern Rail. This station is so much better now it has been refurbished. It is St. Helens main station so it's quite facilitated and it's fairly attractive. It is staffed the majority of the time so there is usually someone on hand to answer questions or get directions. The staff are also very helpful so if you need assistance, make sure you enquire. There is a long stay and short stay car park. The long stay does fill up early but it is free. It is convenient to hop on a train to Liverpool or Wigan and during the day they are quite regular. Overall, a decent train station with a modern and secure feel to it.
