Yup the grand title of Liverpool's primary commuter terminal is a little misleading if anyone is expecting anything even a quarter as magnificent as Grand Central. Central Station should be viewed in the same functional manner as the name truly suggests. The Train drops you smack in the middle of town. Most scousers will be totally used to this station and I will not give it a second thought. Get on train near home. Get off train near shops. However this Yelp lark does a funny thing to your perception and all of a sudden I'm thinking, 'crap, that dead pigeon on the track probably doesn't look so good to those Dutch tourists'. Yes it's a bit gritty but it's too small for you to stick around and if the station was any good then it wouldn't say much about a town. Hope is on the horizon though as there is a planned make over for old Central. A slap of paint and a new colour scheme should make the place a more palatable affair but really you only need it for A to B. read more

I always use the local Merseyrail whether its for going shopping or any other reason. The fares are reasonably cheap and competitive compared to local bus fares. Trains also run quite frequently, typically being every 10-15 minutes so if you time your train well, it will come on time and trains usually consist of several carriages thus there is plenty of seats, however at peak times, it can get full meaning you will need to stand. Central Station is the main port of call for most travellers coming in from all lines including the Wirral and Northern lines so it is very convenient transporting yourself around Merseyside in good time. Trains do run until about 11.30pm which may be a disadvantage for some but all in all, a reliable and quick method of transport. read more

Well Merseytravel is certianly changing the rail travelling experience here (at least at the front or back of your journey) The best parallel I can think of is now at the cinema where instead of queueing for your ticket and then for your popcorn the same queue does it all for you. There are in this shop though plenty of temptations to snack even whilst on your journey to buy your ticket. So for those who are even a bit health concious and have taken the trian for a bit of extra walking exercise you could put back your ambitions of a slimmer figure by succumbing to the multiple temptations of cola chocholate and crisps. On the other hand if you were in a rush and forgot to grab your butties from the fridge then you can replace them here in the most convenient way. The staff are freindly knowledgable and very fociused on meeting your every travel need whilst keeping the Wolves of hunger from your door. read more

Central station is like Lime streets scruffy looking little brother and lives in the shadow of its more illustrious sibling. This is not the kind of place you travel from for big journeys but nonetheless is a convenient little station. There is certainly plenty here to set you up for the day including a Sainsburys for those shopping on the way back from a busy day of work. The problem here is that this place is not the most cleanly and in general could do with a bit of a spruce. If it was given a bit of a makeover then the whole place could be so much more however I fear it is too stuck in its ways for that to happen any time soon which is a big shame. read more

Did you ever see the film Creep? You know, the one where the woman gets locked down in the Underground and stalked by a crazy person? Well, I have, and to say that it put me off the underground is mild. It's a bit grim down there but no different to your usual creepy underground station I just hate waiting around for trains... However, Central Station boasts a collection of shops, CEX, Thorntons and Sainsbury's is good for that last minute shopping before you catch the tube home. It also has a new ticket shop which is quite cool but I always find myself engaged in conversation with the guy at the till when I know I'm going to miss my train that's due in about 50 seconds yet again! read more

Hidden beneath Bold Street and accessed via gaps in the road that look like the shops that once stood there were sucked underground by a quicksand/black hole hybrid, Central Station is one of only four rail stops in the city centre. Compare that to the hundreds of Londinium and our city begins to look pretty provincial. Central is a grim place, where trains blast wind through the tunnels with that weird rubbery smell you always find rushing up your nostrils on the underground. What the hell is that? Train tyres? Despite that, and the way the newspaper stand looks like misery made real, the fact you only ever come to this place to get to somewhere else means it is involved with journeymongering, the funnest type of mongering there is, right after war, fish and iron. read more

Poor Liverpool Central station. The shabbier second cousin of the revamped Lime Street central terminus, it's a homage to the design mishaps of the 1970s and 80s. It appears to be tiled throughout in the kind of decor last seen in a seedy Gents toilet, the strange vacuum moulded seats are a fetching shade of poo brown, and a lot of the time the arrival boards don't give out the proper information. All in all, you can kind of see why a recent survey called it 'one of the worst train stations in UK'. But...still....it has its charms. It's close to Bold Street which means you can run away to the soothing arms of a café if your journey gets too horrendous and despite being underground, you can still get a phone signal there to tell your friends just what kind of heckhole you've ended up in. The staff are mostly friendly, and I also believe you can get a decent cup of coffee from the store there too. Liverpool Central is undeniably in desperate need of a makeover, but believe me, I've seen worse. Which isn't much of a compliment, is it? read more

Liverpool Central is the most convenient train station for arriving in Liverpool, as long as you aren't trying to get to Liverpool One. (In that case, you are better to get off the train at James Street.) This station is situated opposite the Clayton Square shopping centre, and close to St John's shopping centre, Lime Street Station, Bold Street, and the Church Street shops, including Primark, Marks and Spencer, Next, Pineapple, River Island, Topman, and more. Inside the station you will find a Sainsbury's, a newsagents, a cake shop, a Super Drug, a Greig's, and a deliciously handy Thornton's café. The ticket booth also provides cold drinks, snacks, sweets, and magazines and newspapers for sale. But you won't find hot coffee in this station, and sadly I don't recommend Thornton's. (Stick with their hot chocolates for your own sanity.) There are public rest rooms, and they are free, but you need a train ticket to access them. They are not exactly dirty, but they are not always extremely clean either. This station is often riddled with sales people trying to get you to sign up for things, switch to a new gas company, or give you freebies with strings attached. Take my advice: look straight ahead of you, walk past them, and ignore their pleas. The staff at Liverpool Central Station are usually very polite and helpful. read more

I use Liverpool Central Station to get the train to Chester and I think it's so-so for a small station. The platforms and facilities for the Wirral Line are pretty grotty and the facilities in general could be a lot better. I've had to wait in long queues to buy a ticket from the desk when they could easily put a few self service booths in to speed things up. They have one at the moment and it only takes cash. It's quite a dark and gloomy place and could do with some kind of cafe or shop past the ticket barrier. read more

I agree with the previosu post. The platform area is outdated. its grubby and is not a very pleasant experience when waiting for your train. It needs a complete makeover to provide more seats and more attractive surroundings read more

i like central station, obviously not as busy as Lime st, the newly re-done upstairs bit is good though downstairs hasnt been brought up to the same standard. I used this quite regularly last year though now it is not the nearest so havent had much use for it, but its what you expect from any station really, good convenient place for me last year which made it good and reliable! Just some facts about Central. This 'convenient little station' has 18.4 million passengers per year and is the seventeenth largest on the British railway network (8th outside London). In terms of passenger numbers it is bigger than Lime Street and not much smaller than Manchester Piccadilly (19.8million passengers). The station is on two levels with Central Low Level serving the Northern Line and Central Deep Level the Wirral Line. Up until 1972, there was a Central High Level station with a glazed arched roof. This had main line services to Manchester and beyond although, in latter years it was cut back to Gateacre in south Liverpool. The site of the high level station is now being redeveloped as part of the Central Village retail, entertainment and residential scheme and this will include a new entrance to the Central Station concourse which is to be reconstructed. The main overcrowding problem affects the Low Level station, which was built in the 1890s and was once the Liverpool terminus of the Mersey Railway to Birkenhead. Plans for overcoming this problem include rebuilding the roof to omit the central support columns although longer term, a new platform may be added or the whole station rebuilt on a new site (probably under Church Street). The Wirral line platform was opened in 1977 and is similar to a London Underground tube station. The Wirral Line loop now has 16 trains per hour at peak time making it the most frequent service outside of London. read more
