Warrington Central is one of two major stations in Warrington (the other being Bank Quay), and is…read moreserved by trains on 'southern route' from Liverpool to Manchester. The line was opened in 1873 by the Cheshire Lines Committee, a venture formed by the Manchester Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway and the Great Northern railway, joined by the Midland Railway. The line originally ran from Manchester Central to Liverpool Central via Garston, although services were concentrated on Piccadilly and Lime St stations respectively from the late 1960s. The station has two platforms, built on a viaduct: the original main station building on the north side, in an Italianate style of yellow stock brick with red and blue brick details, has been converted into commercial offices, and a new smaller building built on Winwick Street. The station's modern entrance houses a ticket office, small shop and coffee stand, leading via stairs (or newly-installed lifts) to the two platforms. These retain the attractive original retaining walls and their canopies, with decorated brackets, although the original wooden awnings have unfortunately been replaced by ugly corrugated steel versions. The Manchester-bound platform (1) has toilets and a waiting room, whereas the Liverpool platform (2) has only a modern glass waiting room. The station is served by three rail companies: Northern operate a half hourly Liverpool (Lime St) to Manchester (Piccadilly) service, some of which stop at all stations, with others semi-fast. TransPennine Express operate an hourly fast service to Liverpool westbound and Leeds via Manchester eastbound, some of which continue to York, Scarborough or Middlesbrough. East Midlands trains operate an hourly Liverpool to Norwich via Nottingham and Sheffield service, taking over 5 hours to Norwich! There is level access throughout, and Warrington's Bus Station (known as the 'Interchange') is a short walk away under the railway bridge.

While it is an old and basic station, it is pretty nice for an old town and it's pretty easy to get in and out of the station quickly to continue on with your journey. Minimal facilities inside the station but with Warrington's Golden Square Centre being a couple of minutes away, as well as an ASDA nearby that, is helpful. If you're heading into Manchester/Liverpool, there seem to be more services which go from here rather than Bank Quay, including the fastest train into Manchester which goes from here to Piccadilly with East Midlands Railway. 3* - Decent station for a small town, pretty minimal but improving so that's a good thing.

Ferries are every hour on the hour and a good thing to add to your itinerary which is what we did…read more The tickets aren't expensive and it's a good time to spend an hour seeing the city from the river. Lots of views and it goes from one side to the other and all within an hour. The ferry itself isn't the best and options for drink and food are slim but still was a fun experience.

Since we skipped the 50min tour (we were already on a bus tour two days prior), we made it a quick out and back via the commuter ferry times. Going before 9a.m. (or after 5:30 p.m.) will save you in cash and time. The staff both on shore and aboard were extremely helpful and nice. They made the trip seamless, and it's probably 10min one way (10min back). It's too short for seasickness, so it's twice as good. It was an iconic trip (even as brief as it was), and you can do it on the cheap, and TIP: Pay on the other side! Recommend the commuter ferry!

There are raised kerbs to enable level boarding at all ten bays, and automatic sliding glass doors beside the departure points. There are plenty of places where you can sit to wait beside the bus shelters but it can be a bit draughty. The Travel Centre for your tickets or information is open from 9.00am to 5.30pm Mondays to Saturdays and 10.30am to 4.30pm on Sundays. (I found the man in there quite helpful) There are toilets, including a parent and baby facility and disabled toilet (radar key required in the evenings which is available from staff) The bus station is staffed 24 hours a day and there are CCTV Security Cameras.

I have been to bus stations in other cities such as Birmingham and have often found them to be graffiti covered and quite dirty and generally a little bit rough. This place seems to be an exception to the rule it is extremely well run and well kept and in general is a pleasurable place to be. There is a host of information on boards all over the bus station and the buses run regularly and efficiently. This is a well run establishment and I have no complaints as it has always been efficient and helped me on my way as a new comer to the city of Liverpool.

The ride from the heart of downtown Liverpool is quickest by car (25 min ... not the long slog of London's Gatwick and Heathrow.) I love the entryway ... it's easy to make your way in without the usual bustle around an airport. Liverpool does a much better job selling its favorite sons (The Beatles) than back the first time I was here in the 80s, and LPL is no exception. While the wife was buying booze in Duty Free, I spent just as much time and money in the "With Love from Liverpool", Beatles gift shop. Don't forget to check out the statue of John Lennon in the airport (called "Above Us Only Sky" on the Lower Level), as well as the Yellow Submarine out front (like you can miss it!). So, back to eating. Our first time at LPL, we're starving. We see a sign for Frankie and Benny's. Being American, we've never heard of it, looks like a great family restaurant. Well, cut to an hour later, and the worst Caesar Salads ever in our recent past, we get past the Duty Free, go down an escalator, and see (for the first time), The Estuary Bar & Grill, The Kissing Gate, Caffè Ritazza, The Beer House, a Starbucks, and even a Subway. ARGH! So yeah, power through the Duty Free (you have to go through hit to get to the terminals) for better dining options. Hey LPL: Make more clear signage about the restaurants you have!!!

A mere twenty minute drive gets you into the cute little town of Chester. I have fond memories of my first ever school trip to Chester, walking the walls admiring that clock in the centre. My love for the town remains to this day. There is an air of intimacy and romance about the place that I can't explain. Dragonfly is an absolute gem of a sanctuary should you ever have the pleasure to stay will appreciate. It looks and feels more like a town house in Chelsea or Kensington London rather than its current location. Who cares because its bloody fantastic this joint I tell thee mon peeps. Clutching leech-like to the corner of a building, the interior is little more than a corridor dominated by the slick, brass-tapped bar. Outside, there's a barrier separating the patrons from meandering shoppers, like zoo animals. Standing at a table with a cider on a sunny day becomes a bizarre but engrossing experience as people straining with carrier bags and prams shuffle past. You feel like you've simply stopped dead in a busy thoroughfare and in some ways you have. This is the kind of place you could walk into, get a drink and walk out of without breaking stride. Good for one though, provided you don't crack your scalp on the low toilet door. That's never an attractive thing to do in front of shoppers.

Strange place is the old Richmond, not usually the place I would enter as I thought they had an age…read morepolicy - nobody admitted under the age of 60. However this is a very friendly place despite what the pictures might suggest - the ridiculous number of England flags for the world cup make it look like a BNP social club but they are not a permananet feature, although having said that these things usually get left up until they have turned yellow and start to frey. Noty a great selection of beers, the theme is cheap and plentiful as the old fellas here will usually start at midday and go on drinking for ages which creates that strange, funny but baffling atmosphere you get with drunken old people. Friendly but you rarely know what the joke is - it's generally the young one.
