I'm not really whether a particular station is the main station or not, but this seems to be the…read morestation where you catch trains to other parts of the country, even if that other part sort of happens to be Manchester. While it isn't a particularly huge station, it is does have quite a few facilities that make it a decent place to pass through, especially since you can dump your luggage in a room for dumping luggage, and also have a beer at the pub. It's also reasonably close to the city centre, and many of the places that one would want to visit if they happen to end up in Liverpool.

The station was bare, freezing cold, filthy and populated with local hoodies. Since the recent renovation however, the dreaded breakdown is a little more bearable. All the mod cons have been introduced: there are heated waiting rooms and CCTV, and lifts have been installed, so if you give up on trains you can nip down to the bus with relative ease. Unfortunately the hoodies have been reinstalled, but their entertaining antics are not so worrying given the new security system and frequent rail police presence. Sandhills is used as a rail junction, a crossroads between different rail lines: from here you can travel to Liverpool City Centre and on to Hunts Cross; Southport; Ormskirk or Kirkby. The station is also used on football match days with the local Soccerbus ferrying passengers to Goodison or Anfield Stadium

It's a different story now as there are sheltered seating areas with plenty of CCTV to keep an eye out for the troublesome, so this does give you peace of mind. However, it's still always wise to keep your wits about you, as it still isn't the best of areas. There is not a bad view either when you're waiting as you can scan some Kirkdale scenery, not that it's anything to shout about but it's better than gazing at the ground or the railway track!

The station has four platforms, and there are some covered areas where you can wait for the trains. When I was there at 8 AM on a Monday, the station wasn't manned, so keep that in mind if you need assistance or want to buy tickets in person. The signage could be improved -- the platforms aren't clearly indicated, and I had to walk along the platform to figure out where I was and to find the display panels showing train information.

The station is down a small road off tunnel street and the decor is stonewall and it looks quaint and small more like the type of train station you would expect to find in a village in the country rather than a metropolitan city such as Liverpool. The staff are always polite and helpful and there is no shortage of information regarding your travel that they will give to you. So to summarise theres nothing standout about this place but I have always found that the people make it great and it is a reliable and convenient place to travel from.

But it's a good place to change trains if you're coming from Liverpool and you want to get to Chester. Also, if you want to go shopping in Birkenhead it's fairly easy to get to the shopping centres and market from this station. Also, as the name of the station suggests, it's near Hamilton Square itself, which is a nice patch of green in the city. It makes a great place to have a picnic lunch, and it's right by the Wirral Museum.

It's just dank and dim and dark and I never feel 100% comfortable here! Much like its little sister station, 'Conway Park', it's another dark stop on the Wirral line as you make your journey towards the city of Liverpool. I always much prefer to get the bus if I'm stuck in Birkenhead, just because all the stations in Birkenhead are shitty and don't seem to be that well kept! Although this is a grade 2 listed building, this means nothing to me! If it were a mansion it would be rotting away at the floorboards! Boo!

Like most of the stations I've used in this area Birkenhead Central looks better from the outside. Inside it's more than a little run down and in need of refurbishment. There is a small snack bar but otherwise it's all a bit desolate. On the plus side it is handily placed for the town centre, if you take a left just past Central Hotel and head past House of Fraser it's only a five minute walk to the shops.

Sometimes it's easier to get off at Hamilton Square, depending on where you are coming from, since you will only need one train to get to Birkenhead this way, but I still think this station is a nicer one. It also has a fairly sizeable snack bar, unlike Hamilton Square. Definitely a plus. Within easy walking distance of the Grange Shopping Centre, Pyramid Shopping Centre, and the Birkenhead Market.
