Not to be confused with Unfair Pwll Railway Station which is named after a very unfair Pwll,…read morewhatever a Pwll is. This is a cute little railway station on the North Wales Coast Line, right along the track from London to Holyhead (which is basically London to Dublin if you think about it). It was closed down for five years in the 60s because of a horrible fire, but it's back now. It has platforms on both sides and a lovely old white and brown brick house that reminds me of a pub on the main platform. It also has a cute signal box as well. It's definitely a very pretty town, and one of my favourite things about its station it is this famous sign which has the full name of the city, a very very long name, the longest on record I think, and for this sign alone it has to get 5 stars, as it's one of the most famous tourist attractions in Wales.

Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch: firstly, thank goodness for Copy &…read morePaste! Secondly, with a name like this I HAD to check the place out! It's one of those "things to do before you die" places. Some people choose to go to the Amazon, others to the Sahara desert or exploring Asia... it just so happens that I chose a sleepy village in north west Wales. The train station is the main attraction of the village with tourists such as myself coming from unbelievable distances to look at a sign. Amazing when you think about it in principle, a little sad when you've done it and are reflecting on a long day out! Still, there are some great Facebook photo opportunities. Within the grounds of the station is a mini art gallery type thing (basically a room with some random pretty things to make deflated tourists feel like they've done a number of activities). When I was there there were a couple of funky guitars on show with some pictures of Wales. Not a bad addition to the place but not much to shout about. Outside is a big car park so you can pull up and see the station. The station itself is operational and runs trains to Birmingham. Unusually it is a request stop so when you see a train coming you have to put your arm out like you would a bus. Opposite the station is a small shopping centre (more like a department store) where you can buy Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch related memorabilia as well as anything they can stick a Welsh flag on. The locals speak Welsh as a first language but do revert to English as I'm sure they see a lot of non Welsh tourists. I found them to be very friendly and helpful when needed. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Station is a place which is best shared with friends and is best included in a larger selection of activities as opposed to being the core one. Once you've seen the big sign and taken a picture, there isn't much to it!

Caledonian Sleeper trains also pass through here, once per day in both directions (London/Scotland) For a nine platform station, it still feels pretty small, unlike virtually every other main train station which is the main one of a city/category B and above there isn't a WHSmith - nor is there much at the station nonetheless other than a few coffees stands with little seating, and a Starbucks which couldn't serve food OR COFFEE! (Come on... are they called Starbucks tea or Starbucks coffee?) The ticket area is pretty small and it does close even at busy times in the evening - meaning it can be hard to find a member of staff. When I did find a staff member they did seem friendly enough even though they had thousands of football fans singing after watching Manchester City defeat Preston North End 3-0 in the third round of the Carabao Cup. It is in a good location for the centre, being only a short walk away from the shopping area, and two stops on the bus from the bus station with cabs outside the station. 2* - Poor facilities in the station but a good location, with friendly enough staff for the extra star.

Going to work by train doesn´t necessarily mean you have to run straight to the cleaner´s the way you do it in the Czech Republic :D Prima malé nádraží s pár otevřenými pokladnami, prostorným novinovým stánkem a stánkem s občerstvením. Přehledné tabule, snadná orientace. Jezdit vlakem do práce neznamená skočit šipku do čistírny tak, jak je to typické v Česku :D

It's basically sat in the middle of a load of estates and I nearly always manage to get lost en route to there when I'm getting the train back home. Location issues aside, Blundellsands is a fairly pleasant station these days. It has recently undergone a small refurbishment which included the installation of indoor seating areas, ideal for those chilly winter nights when you're waiting for the last train and you're looking to avoid the drunken old man who is just dying to tell you his life story and what life choices you should make. With the recent refurbishment also came the electronic boards that inform you how long a wait you have before the next train (can you even remember a time when we didn't have them? It seems positively prehistoric to think of a time when you had to guess whether you'd just missed a train or not) and the little kiosk just outside is a good place to stop off for a drink or snack if you're stuck waiting for a while.

The lines leads from Southport to Hunts Cross and while there are no direct intercity links, the destinations include major links such as Sandhills for connections to Ormskirk and Kirkby, Liverpool Central for connections to Lime Street and the Wirral Line and connecting trains to Preston and Blackpool can be caught from Southport. Blundellsands has recently undergone quite extensive renovation with the original waiting rooms being heated, new cycle storage, a customer toilet and a vast overhaul of the parking facilities, which are free to use. There is one automated ticket machine, a payphone and a small kiosk with all the essentials. My only criticism of Blundellsands Station is the disabled facilities, while there is a ramped subway enabling access of prams and cycles, I don't feel this is good enough for disabled customers. My grandmother s wheelchair bound and finds the ramp far to steep to navigate; when using the train we are forced to continue to the next station whose two railway lines are separated by the platform, change trains and come back again! Considering the number of retirement and nursing homes surrounding Blundellsands this inability to access the station is absurd. The staff at Blundellsands are invariably pleasant and sociable, they have worked at this station for years and always remember a face.!
