Venturing throughout Apple Hill, thankfully a friend and I were on a quest to find where exactly the little signs were leading to, in terms of a haunted forest. My friend would drive down one way and then back again, and we finally found the trail to drive through. It felt like something out of a spooky movie but we were determined to see what the signs were about! This being our second year, I went ahead and searched for the event which made it so much more easier. Wow, all of the thought and creativity that goes into the haunted forest is definitely something to see, thinking of the large skeletons that are in peoples lawns add animation and other effects for miles and miles and boom you have the haunted forest. Only $10 per person, I only wish they kept it open a little later (like when the sun is going down) to make it a little more spooky but I'm happy this has become an annual apple hill festivity!

My bf found this camping spot through Hip Camp. We went with a group of 13 and stayed at 2 different campsites that were somewhat next to each other. We liked the fact that the campsites were far enough apart from each other that you could be loud and not disturb each other. Quiet hour starts at 9pm, but people were still loud and nobody seemed to mind. The dirt was red and dusty and got on everything, but we just went with it lol. There was a fire pit w/ a grill to use, a bucket for water and a picnic table. There were 2 portapotties that were a decent walk from our campsites (13 & 20) across the open field. There was also a sink & mirror outside of them. Keep in mind there was a campsite right behind the toilets. Also, you are to take all trash with you as there is no dumpster on the property. Basically, this was the perfect place to be surrounded by nature and stargaze because you could really see every star possible to the naked eye (my opinion, not factual lol). Me and my bf saw a shooting star together and it was truly magical!

We stayed at this little Miner's Cabin for two nights during Thanksgiving week. What a beautiful stay in a lovely little cabin. Gordon, the owner, supported a local charity, Hands 4 Hope, by donating a stay at his home to the silent auction. I was the lucky winner. So right off the bat, thank you to the owner for his generosity. We arrived in the evening to very crisp, cold air and were transported to the picture perfect fall postcard. The cabin was warm and cozy. The whole space is renovated and well kept. All the little touches have been thought of. There is a large deck with a fire pit and lights then brighten up a whole meadow. I got a great laugh out of the signs pointing you toward the local brewery, Rainbow Orchards. (which deserves its own review.) The space is small. Best for two people planning a romantic stay. Then again, a mom with her two kids fit right in and we had a blast. We loved our stay and I can't wait to visit the area again!

Is there a fee to park to use your walking trail? How long is the trail, is it a loop or out and back? Leashed dog friendly?

Thanks for the inquiry. Unfortunately, due to the one heavy snowstorm we had this last winter, there are downed trees and branches blocking the trail. So, until we can get these cleared, the trail is closed. Please check back with me next month and… Read more

Great experience here! The mine was cool, a short and sweet self guided tour. Which I actually…read morereally liked. You can get through both the mine and the blacksmith demo in a little over an hour. Sometimes little attention spans can't handle a full days worth of historical education (myself included). Do not skip the blacksmith demo. The blacksmith we had was a great guy. Very knowledgeable and passionate about his craft. We very much enjoyed chatting with him, and we even bought 3 hand forged pieces he made. I forget his name but he was a totally cool guy. A retired fire captain with a ton of cool knowledge and fun stories. We loved him he was the highlight of the visit. We enjoyed chatting with the gal in the stamp room too.

Our first stop was the mine cave that was very cold inside and educational - they give you a phone that plays audio with all of the historical facts while walking through the mine. It's about 15 minutes and we really enjoyed ourselves. The staff member who handles the cave tour was great with getting the 7 of us situated and explaining the rules. We also checked out the Blacksmith and the Stamping Mill - both were also very entertaining and educational. My daughter got to hammer a square nail into a tree truck - cool way to leave a little mark on the place. Gold Bug Park also offers Gem Panning which would did not check out, but we saw a couple of kids having fun while doing it. Entrance to the park is free, but the mine cave tour is $12 per adult, $8 per kid - 5 and under are free! Overall, we had a lot of fun! So many cool artifacts and history to explore. I thought every single staff member was knowledgeable, friendly and did a great job keeping our kids engaged! We would definitely come back to Gold Bug Park next time we are in Placerville!
