CONS: The bathrooms were out of the way downstairs tucked into a corner so for those who have a tough time walking down the stairs that could be a problem. However, i wouldn't let that one thing turn you away from them. OVERALL: If I was in the area and needed their services, especially for pre-planning, i would certainly give them a call

Family owned, Leonardis is what a funeral home should be. It's hard to imagine that you have to trust so many strangers with what may seem like your loved one's final memory. The Leonardis family is in touch with the community. We even shared a laugh or two chatting about the neighboring towns (and one of my brother's delinquent behavior as a child..haha). I just thought the wake was done so well. After all, they are a business. When it was time to leave for the night and then again the next day before the funeral, they were sympathetic and helped my family along without being too pushy. You've gotta be a certain kind of person to handle that. Not to mention there was no one wiping their eyes with a sleeve because there were tissues were placed throughout the room. The one thing I will say is the bathroom is the teensy bit creepy to me. Probably because it's on the first/bottom floor of the memorial home. Just descending the short stairs can do things to your brain.. but overall if you want less stress, let the Leonardis family take care of you.

They had a TV for photo memories and small tables scattered around and easels to allow for photo books and photo displays for memories. A small water fountain with water dispenser right beside that needed to be refilled sat by the stairs. Some of the elderly had to be helped with the entry steps, I'm not sure if they have a handicap entrance available on the other side that I missed. I'm not sure this was originally designed as a funeral home, it felt almost more like a home that had been renovated to fit the funeral at some point due to the design inside. Or maybe that was their point? Was here for the funeral of an educator and parking was scarce in the lot, fortunately the family had notified the town for a police officer so they could help direct the traffic in front. Many students and teachers came, and parking was filled up on the street for blocks around. The line extended well out to the corner of the street, but the funeral home was kind to keep allowing folks to come in even though it was well past the end 8:00 p.m. time for the viewing. No photos, as I felt it would be inappropriate here. As I did not interact with the staff, I would highly recommend a visit before making any decisions.

However- Kathleen went above and beyond to keep my brother's death private. She had strangers walking in to ask about his services before we even planned them. Some people at flat out insane. Driving into the cemetery, after a rather long, arduous drive on parkway north, we entered a beautiful, peaceful catholic cemetery.. so lovely, I thought. Unfortunately, I had to deal with two women working in the cemetery office. As we approached the counter, the workers took their sweet time to address us. Then unfortunately, this troll-like woman, whom I believe was Lydia, rummaged through our paperwork with much distain and rudeness. She was without a doubt, the most ignorant, and despicable person I unfortunately had to encounter. Believe me, these were especially trying times for myself and family. However, the other employee came to the counter and resolved the issue, which I might add, was caused by their office giving the funeral director of Evergreen Funeral Home, Middletown,NJ., incorrect or not specific requirements needed for the paperwork. Here's a thought Lydia, if you are so unhappy being employed by the Archdiocese, Gate of Heaven Cemetery, in which you deal with bereaved families , you should seek employment more suitable to your demeanor and personality...such as a garbage depot. ja

I planned to return to the Mausoleum after visiting the graves of my relatives to get a cross before leaving. While I was at the gravesite of a loved one, a car pulled up and Father Joe introduced himself. He requested that I write a name down of a loved one who he could pray for and he gave me a Holy Spirit Pin to hold onto. He felt like so genuine a human being and meeting him lifted my spirits and felt so comforting. Father Joe seems like a truly welcome addition to Gate of Heaven and it is so wonderful to personally experience how he is making himself available for spiritual guidance to visitors

They don't let family and friends watch the casket be lowered like in many popular movies. Fricking dramatic effect." I think Heavenly Rest is the nicest in town (considering Restland and Catholic Cemetaries are like a 1-5 minute drive away). Awkward to say huh? Well it's true. I like that it's gated (compared to Restland). The graves up front with the plates instead of tombstones are more expensive, just FYI. The yard is very well organized but the roadways drive me crazy. Unless noted, the narrow ways are are two laned and people don't normally speed but it can get a little tight. The grounds are well kept and they even put some decorations up during the holidays. And I know Hanover Florist will come in and do some tasteful plants if you order it monthly (the florist across from here is a leetle more expensive obv because of location). There are public bathrooms connected to the office that is to the left as you enter. There is a public entrance so you don't have to go through the building. Not that you should be afraid of them since the women who helped us organize the burlal were pretty nice. OH and they close right before sundown.. so make sure you get out before then or else you'll either get locked in or have to leave by the far left entrance (going towards St. Rose away from Route 10) over by the house.
