Every time I make my way down to Northern Liberties to get my hair cut and colored, I leave so happy and thrilled with my new hair. I've done darker stretched root balayages as well as lighter balayages, with a tight root, which grow out very nicely and are low maintenance for busy (read lazy) ladies like myself. A lot of stylists say they know how to do a good balayage, but Ashley always does an amazing job (way better than some of the stylists my friends go to, but I won't name names, haha).

I didn't want to straighten my hair or look super demure and soft -- I wanted my bouncy, tight curls but elevated, a hot pink lip, rosy cheeks, purple shadow and lots of highlight -- the team really listened to me and made it all happen. I worked with Stacy (hair) and Dee (makeup) for my look and they were lovely and fun and really skilled. They were also really easy to talk to and connect with. After my consultation with them, I gave them feedback that they ended up incorporating into my final wedding look. There are so many talented hair stylists and make-up artists out there, but communication is just as important. Dee ended up going out and getting some extra eyeshadows that were a better fit for what I wanted and Stacy used a smaller curler to give me a tighter curl. Stacy and Dee's ability to take my notes and create a look that better aligned with my vision makes them better at what they do and that's why I can 100% recommend working with them. They will listen to you and work on giving you what you want and what makes you happy and that is the marker of an amazing hair/makeup artist. Stacy, Dee along with the other 2 artists glammed up my 6 bridesmaids along with my mom and mother-in-law. They did a FANTASTIC job and in a record amount of time too. Everyone looked and felt amazing and praised their work. Everyone's looks lasted through the entire day and night (and in some cases until the next day too). Capelli + Trucco are worth the money. I found them to be very affordable compared to other quotes that I received and they did amazing work. They were also flexible with rescheduling (due to the pandemic) and honoring rates. I do want to mention that during my working with them, they had a switch in management during which communication halted for several weeks, but once Katy took over, communication went back to normal and I didn't have any issues afterward.

(1) Claudia late, with no call as to her whereabouts. (2) She "arranged" only the front of my hair, and did nothing to "dress" the back of my head. I had to re-do much of what she had done, as her "style" made me look like a "milk maid". (3) She used the same foundation and powder on me (rosy complexion) as she used on the mother of the bride, a fair skinned blonde. I had to wash nearly all of the makeup off when I returned to my room and discovered my face was yellow, an unnatural shade for me, and this would be clearly visible to all when dressed in my gown. (4) One of the bridesmaids had to walk downstairs to the salon because of Claudia's tardiness...she ran out of time. I tried contacting Claudia after the wedding to discuss my concerns with her. After all, I paid more than $120 (2010) for the services she provided me. Claudia never returned my calls. I would never recommend anyone to use Claudia for an important event, she is apparently too busy to care.

When I got there at the time we picked, she was busy doing someone else's make-up and acted like I was in the way. She told me to email her with what I wanted done. When I did this she never wrote me back. I tried multiple times to call and she never returned my calls. Finally, she emailed me out of the blue and asked if I wanted to do my trial on a certain date. I was nervous b/c she had been so hard to reach but I decided it was worth it b/c I had heard good things so I said that date was fine. She never responded to the email saying she got my response so I was just left to assume we were on. Two days before our trial I emailed her to confirm and she canceled on me b/c she had a better offer come up. She gives off an attitude like she is famous and she is impossible to get in touch with. She may be a good make-up artist, I don't know, but I know at least for a wedding, you want people you can count on.

My preview session with Jackie and Katie was held at the Cherry Hill location, which was convenient since it had a parking lot. I found the preview session (which I was initially hesitant about doing) very helpful since I was able to test out the hairstyle I was considering as well as my makeup and lashes. It was a good trial run where I was able to give my input and request any changes etc and, at the end of the session, I was extremely happy with how my hair and makeup turned out. This helped put my mind at ease for how things would go on my wedding day. On the day of my wedding, Katie and Jackie arrived on time, were very professional, and did an amazing job getting hair and makeup done for everyone, including a couple of extra people for makeup. Jackie did my hair exactly as she had done during the preview session, which was a replication of a photo I had shown her. She even placed my tikka on perfectly. After trying another high-rated salon in Philly and having a hairdresser try and fail to thin out my very thick hair for two hours, I did some research and came across Salon JKU. Even though they don't don't have an online booking platform, it was fairly easy to make an email inquiry, then book a time within the week over the phone. I booked with Amelia, and was really glad I did. She asked a lot of good questions about what I was looking for, then talked me through what she was going for. I get my hair cut every 6 months, so I was really just looking for someone to take out weight and give my hair some shape. Amelia gave me a wonderful short haircut with a lot of movement and texture. Her cut was meticulous and she took out an incredible amount of weight, yet maintained volume and body. After our discussions about my typical haircare routine, she gave me a cut that looks good without any styling. I really appreciated that, because sometimes the cut looks amazing after it's all blown out, but it's not a look that I can ever recreate at home. A few days after my appointment, someone asked me how I styled my hair, and I told them I didn't style it at all. They couldn't believe it because it visually had so much volume! The pricing is higher than other places that I have been in Philly (I paid $100 + tip), but in my opinion, it was totally worth it for one of the best haircuts I've received.

So I went on the phila queens Facebook group and posted for Asian hair stylist recommendations for both cut and color and someone kindly recommended salon JKU to me and after looking at their Instagram and their stylist personal Instagram's I decided that this was the best salon for Asian hair given a lot of the stylist are of Asian descent. I got a full head balayage done by Memmi (@coloristmemmi) and haircut done by Chris Sotos. I cannot express enough how pleased I am with the results. PLEASE note this does not mean the salon is specialized in Asian hair only. I was the only Asian client in the salon yesterday. You definitely don't HAVE to be Asian to come here lol I just really really wanted my hair done by someone of Asian descent since I've never tried that before. Anyway, Memmi did such a good job and was so pleasant to talk to while she was doing my hair she really is an interesting person with such a cool backstory. Same goes for Chris, who I had many things in common with. I cannot wait to return to the salon for my next cut and or color.
