Maderas Golf Club in Poway uses the natural hills of Poway with multiple elevation changes that make this course a challenge for any skill level. This course rewards players who can hit the ball long and accurately with some long par 3's and par 5's. With this visit being my first time playing at Maderas, this course for a high handicapper was tough with the changing elevation. Club selection was very important and getting a clean strike rewards you with a chance. The course overall was in good shape and the greens were tricky so it took a couple of holes to get the speed down. Overall great experience at Maderas as the facility was top tier, staff was excellent and the course was challenging. Definitely put this course on your list and don't forget to say hi to the wild turkeys that roam the course freely. read more

Stunning, award winning course. I paid $189 on a Thursday ($159 green fees + $30 cart). Carts are equipped with water and ice. The starter asks you to order food from the cart on the 9th hole so it is ready for you at the turn before the 10th. The bag boys will load your cart and unload it when your done. We played this course on a Wednesday. We were rushed, harassed by staff and ultimately I will never play her again. We were pushed constantly by a 3 ball behind. We were 4. I was playing with my 80 year old father, yet Marshall's changed our playing partners to have carts that could enter restricted areas. Fair maybe, as they did not care about being slow. However my father and I did and were impacted by the Marshall's constant viewing and pressure. Not enjoyable at all. I literally was running to my shots, not even one practice swing and hitting. This type of pressure makes people slower. Insane. Really hated the experience. read more

Absolutely disappointing experience. For a course charging nearly $200 per player, you'd expect basic courtesy and professionalism--Maderas failed spectacularly. From the moment we arrived, we were met with rudeness and condescension. The front desk employee, Evan, was dismissive and unhelpful, and the starter, Doc, was shockingly rude and unaccommodating. Instead of welcoming guests, they acted like they were doing us a favor by letting us play. This kind of treatment would be unacceptable anywhere, but at a high-end course, it's inexcusable. We felt disrespected and unwelcome the entire time. Combine that with a course that's far from exceptional, and it's safe to say we'll never be back. There are plenty of other options that actually value their guests--Maderas is not one of them. read more

A beautiful course. A joy to play. Only nags were we had a 7am tee time and we got there at 6am and the team didn't open the doors to anything until 6:17...the other duo for 7am were also standing outside waiting to check in, use the bathroom, grab coffee and then head to the range for our 7am. So staff needs to work on opening on time on a Saturday morning ;) Course etc was great. read more

One word for this course..... IMMACULATE!!! We've always wanted to play this course since it had amazing reviews and was rated one of the top courses in San Diego County. So once we agreed and set up a tee time we were ready and excited to play! Once we arrived and parked we were greeted by the host up front who already had our name on the sheet and also our names printed on the cart placard. Once we set up our clubs, the employees informed us of the clubhouse location and the driving range location. They also stated that there were already range balls for us to hit for free. We were amazed and thanked them. When we started playing, the course was gorgeous and was open with hardly any rough. So many beautiful shots, and just as beautiful houses all around. The fiat ways were perfect and the greens were just right with a little speed. We had a blast and shot a great round of golf. The price is exactly what you would expect from a course like this, and the snack bar has amazing food! After we played, we drove up to the return cart area and were greeted by staff who assisted us with our goof clubs and even cleaned all our clubs with a towel and carried our bag to the front while we went to the bar. So if you want an amazing experience from a phenomenal course than this place is a must! Will definitely be coming back here! read more

Great round today at one of my favorite courses. Grass was perfect.Greens were perfect. Our starter Jeff was great. He has that gift of engaging communication. My only complaint is at the turn. We stopped at the turn to pick up Hot Dogs we ordered at hole #8. We waited for 5 minutes for someone to show up and then we had to order the Hot Dogs again. While waiting, we watched the groups behind us pass the lunch shack and go ahead of us. Jeff escorted us ahead of a foursome which we appreciated very much. He has situation awareness Carl with ice cold water on Hole #14 100 F hot . Thanks Carl We bought great merchandise at the pro shop afterwards. read more

I was (emphasis on past tense) a long-time player and member here. An open letter to Maderas ... Let's get the easy part out of the way - the golf course is fantastic. A little gimmicky in spots (8th and 9th holes seem wedged in to fit the front 9), but a track that is easy to love. Almost always in great condish. Shoot, just riding around in a cart, having a beer and taking in all the beauty without ever hitting a shot is incredible. Staff always seems cool and pace of play usually decent. Maderas would get 5 ***** based on the golf alone, but unfortunately ... COST aka GREEDY TROON: I've been coming here for over 20 years and have slowly watched the admin nickel and dime the player to the bone. It was $100 to play here for a LONG, LONG time, which is not cheap, but reasonable given the upkeep needed for the course and top level facility. No complaints at that price point. After COVID and the golf boom, $100 became $130, then $140, then $160 and now ... gasp $200 - and that's if you're a member. Non-members? Sorry, yes it's a public course, but you're gonna pony up $240 to play Fri-Sun and that's not including their latest tax - a semi-hidden cart fee. $25 to split or $50 if riding alone that applies to members and non-members alike. That's right, TROON now has the audacity to not only charge you a $240 "walking" green fee on a course that many people would have extreme difficulty walking w/all of the ups, downs and elevation changes, but they want an additional $50 for a cart. This brings the grand total for a regular Joe or Jill to just under $300. No thanks. I can pay $50 and walk at Torrey, Coronado or many other courses in SD. Sorry Maderas - you're out of the rotation. Your greed got the worst of you. At this point, just make the course private and stop torturing your long-time loyal customers. My final note and cautionary tale. Golf was dying a slow death before COVID. Courses were closing left and right in SD (San Luis Rey, Doubletree, Carmel Mtn Ranch, Stoneridge CC just down the street form you) and nation-wide. You may be raking in the $ now and sticking it to the paying customer every chance you get, but history will repeat itself. The demand will dissipate and you will want your loyal regulars back. Don't be surprised if they don't return and your beautiful course ultimately gets paved over for custom homes like the other spots. No one wants that :-( so get it together over there TROON. read more

We had an early tee time at 7:30am and it was very cold. Despite that and that the golf shop was closed due to COVID, everything was awesome! From the driving range, to the starter, to the course Marshall, to the well kept greens and fairways, the drink cart, and the snack bar was great! Maybe I'm partial because I was the only female out of our foursome and I love that I had some kind of advantage with the red tees:) The staff was very friendly in all areas of the course. Played on Friday twilight for $190.00 at 3:30 PM and it was pretty bad. 1) I was charged $9.45 for "water surcharge". What is this about? 2) I was charged $5.00 for "bag service fee". Not one employee ever touched my bag. Again, I have NO idea what this is about. 3) Starting at 3:30 pm, i thought I'd finish or get very close. The course was SO backed up, I stopped after 11 holes. I mean it was a very bad wait after each and every hole. 4) Weekend morning tee times are around $250. I thought the course and the conditions would be much better. For the price, definitely not worth it IMHO. 5) For such a high priced course, i would have expected grass golf range but it wasnt. Lemonade at the end is really good and the club house looks good. But all in all, definitely not worth the trip, especially for this price. read more

Was afraid to pay triple digits for a round of golf but my overall experience here was memorable The course conditions were insane and the course was fun the carts are fully loaded with coolers,club and ball cleaners, speakers,GPS,and towels I was greeted half way through the parking lot by a cart guy who took my bag and told me where to check in and once I checked in my cart and bag were literally a few steps away which was awesome I asked for range balls and they guy at the desk told me it's included in the tee fee and I was thinking oh it's probably like a Small maybe a large bucket of balls it was a giant bucket with all you could hit balls I was in heaven i didn't have to worry about running low on balls and feeling like i wasn't warmed up enough The staff had me feeling like a king I was literally asked if i needed anything by every person that walked passed me even if I just saw them a minute ago the marshal was nice and told me the lay out of the first hole and checked up on us on a couple more holes through out the day SUPER BIG S/o to Luke the cart guy I left my $700 Prada glasses in the cart and completely forgot I even left them in the cubby and he ran me down in the parking lot to return them to me I tipped him for being honest and returning them half way down the lot he totally could of kept them and I honestly probably wouldn't have remembered I left them in the cart but he did the right thing and returned them give that man a raise or bonus something that's a really honest guy overall I enjoyed my day there and plan on returning soon read more

Managers are on a power trip. Had a private event for a charity and they were very rude and non-hospitable.

It came to my attention from my buddy that his clubs were stolen not long ago from this course. We were there earlier and staff handling bags seem to be on their phones on the job. Thats exactly why these clubs get stolen if your staff are on their phones rather than keeping eye on the bags. Do better and make sure the employees are not stuck on their phones. The course overall was a great course to golf at but the professionalism of their staff needs to improve. read more

This rating is for the lunch we had at The Grille. I have played golf at Maderas a couple times, and don't dig the $200 price tag, nor the blind shot "trickery" that was laid out on the track. Haven't played there for years, and don't plan on it anytime soon . . . or even later. Had fish tacos with shrimp substituted for the battered fish. Pretty good, thanks for the effort. Didn't have a printed wine list, and didn't have any white or Rose' chilled by the bottle. After looking at a few different bottles, we settled on them icing a Sauvignon Blanc, and were quoted "$36-$38". Bill came and it was $48. After a mention of the prior quote, the price was adjusted without any conflict. Will most likely return, it is a beautiful and peaceful setting. read more

Pace of play is terrible. Took us 5:25 Minutes on a Sunday afternoon (12:50 tee time). They claim they play in 4:25 and that is a flat untruth! read more

This review is for the VENUE (not the golf course itself) hosting a WEDDING reception. I can't believe it's taken me this long to type up this review! My husband and I got married a little over a year ago and we still can't stop talking about how much fun our reception was here! PROS: Affordable, Delicious Food, Secluded/Private, Bridal House, Beautiful Scenery, Ability to take photos on golf course CONS: Can't think of any to be honest... My husband and I got married in a Catholic church so I can't speak to the ceremony aspect of the venue; but I've seen it done before and it is a beautiful, secluded, area to have one. The coordinator for the venue, CHELSEA, was AMAZING from the very start! She was easy to get in touch with and always stayed on top of things. She is very friendly and easy to talk to. It also helped that she knew our wedding planner, Lavish Weddings, very well as she used to work with them in the past. This made communication between all parties that much easier! PRICE: We wanted a reception venue close to our church so we tried to stay around the Poway/Rancho Bernardo/Carmel Mountain area. Of all the ones in the area, we found this one to be a hidden gem! It is so reasonably priced. There weren't a ton of little fees; for example, you don't have to pay for parking (at least since we had our wedding last year) like some other venues. FOOD: The food here is amazing! I wanted to choose a venue that served their own food but I was also worried that the food would just be average. Well let me tell you, everyone at our reception was pleasantly surprised at how well dinner tasted, especially the PORK LOIN! PRIVACY: Unlike many other venues, they only host one event at a time. That means, no multiple brides or wedding parties! It's just you and your guests! Additionally, to get to this venue, you have to drive quite deep down the road, enhancing the seclusion. It is a golf course surrounded by mountains and valleys. It's just beautiful. BRIDAL HOUSE: They have this private little bridal house where the bride and her bridal party can get ready! It can be seen on the right as soon as you enter from the main road. They'll have fruit and champagne available for the party to enjoy! I just loved this little addition! If you're having your ceremony here, the boys can get ready at a different location, I believe in one of the restaurant areas. But since we didn't have our ceremony here, the boys opted to get ready at a hotel. GOLF COURSE PHOTOS: Newlyweds have the unique opportunity to ride in a golf cart and take the most gorgeous photos around the golf course. Some other locations did not offer this, so this was definitely a plus! It was nice knowing we had a place where we could take the unique, beautiful pictures, without having to drive all around San Diego. If you're looking for a wedding venue, make sure Maderas Golf Club is on your list! read more

Being a San Diego resident and playing many different courses I have to say I have never been to a course where someone is going go out of their way and tell you to leave 2 range balls on the driving range instead of walking down to the greens with them pre our golf round what a joke! I played a round on a Sunday morning with my brother and cousin after a long hard week of work.... we started off at the driving range then wanted to use the short game pre round, as my brother finished at the range he had 2 balls in his hand walking to the greens and the guy looking like he was training somebody or something said something to him, I was in my groove practicing but little do I know later when asking my brother what that guy said he thought he was going to steal the 2 driving range balls and told him to put them down hah what a joke! What are we 15??? Too bad my brother is too nice or he would of gotten it from me right on the spot. Whoever the filipino looking trainer is needs to grow some class and respect and mind some of his own business. What a joke that guy was... won't be going back here anytime soon. read more

Beautiful course. Challenging, hilly layout. Pretty good pace of play. So, why the "1 Star Review"? We played behing a group of drunks. Shouting. Screaming, really. F'ng this. F'ng that. One threw his club then couldn't find it. Fell down in the middle of fairway so drunk. Pace of play screeched to a halt. The Marshall was aware. He came by us several times on back 9. We finally call pro shop. He comes out to OUR cart and tells us there's really nothing he can do. A Golf Digest Top 100 Course allows screaming, falling down drunks, saying they could do nothing about it. And, allowing these messed up dudes to drive? Disappointed in Troon. read more

This is one of the golf courses in San Diego. It is pricey but you get absolutely top notch service and access to a beautiful golf course. The course is tough and long. But I really enjoy the course as it's tough but fair. There are tons of gorgeous shots but you have to keep in play as it's a tight track; this isn't Torrey where you can spray drives all day. The course is in fantastic condition - lush fairways and tight greens. The staff is amazing and will go out of their way to help you. There are good deals to play here on golfnow and I recommend checking them out. read more

don't go unless you like getting scammed. had a 1 hour lesson booked. when we showed up, the trainer said "I don't have any lessons for 2-3 hours so no problem if we go a bit over". ended up going for about 1 hr 45min, didn't even do any extra lessons, was everything he said we'd do at the beginning. when leaving, he said "I'm gonna charge you an extra $100 for the extra hour if that's ok". no mention of it before, no asking if we wanted to stay longer. either stick to your price or have a lesson that actually fits in the timeframe. read more

this course is beautiful. There are some challenging holes, but the greens are very well kept. We played a ladies scramble here and had so much fun. The scenery is breath taking. This is NOT a hacker place either, so the pace of play was perfect. read more

Pretty poor experience for such a "nice" golf club. The course itself is pretty nice (although nothing special/not worth the $200 price tag IMO) and a tough golf track/good challenge, but upon arrival (for our 12:30 pm tee time, which should have been plenty of time to finish before sunset at 5:45 pm), we were informed that there was an hour 'frost delay'. I of course asked what happens if we don't finish and they basically ignored by question as if it wasn't their fault that we wouldn't be able to finish our $200 round of golf. Additionally, we pre-paid for four of our six green fees, and the pro shop was aware of this and that we only needed to actually check-in/pay for the additional two green fees. Unfortunately that didn't stop them from charging three of us for green fees, which we figured out after the round when we were all squaring up. Finally, pace of play was ridiculous. We played the first 6 holes in two hours (and this is of course after having to have waited an additional hour for the frost delay). So of course we didn't even come close to finishing our round even though our original tee time was at 12:30. No offer from the pro shop for a replay round or even credit to the pro shop or discounted return round. Overall a pretty big waste of $200. If you want a nice golf experience in San Diego, there are A LOT better options. read more

This was a beautiful Golf course but not so good of service. Especially the Golf Ranger. When you spend this kind of money, it's about enjoying the experience and the Ranger made our experience horrible ! He thought we were holding up the round of golf when there were other Ed who actually held up our golf game. Ilse continued to do this three different times. My friends and I will not be coming back and I do not recommend this golf course. Get yourself a new Ranger who has a better concept of how to take care of your customers. read more

This review is regarding us having our wedding here on October 20, 2019 :) Like many couples, we searched everywhere for our perfect wedding venue. It took a while for us to come across Maderas because it didn't have that great of an online presence. We immediately fell in love with it. We didn't plan on having a full on reception, it has started out as a simple classy brunch wedding. But once we saw this place we jumped into the deep end of wedding planning. It was larger than we had initially planned but we loved it! What we loved: - Gorgeous grounds for tons of photo ops. Unfortunately we ran out of time and only got to use a few but it was beautiful and you could hardly tell we were at a golf course. - Flexibility in the ball room for size. There an air wall / retractable floor to ceiling partition to make the room smaller if needed. This is what we initially planned to do but since it was the same price to use the whole room we decided to use it all. It's amazing how small it shrinks when filled with people and furniture. - The staff - we started our with Chelsea the event planner who was super nice, then halfway through planning she went on maternity leave and we were handed to Becca the catering manager. She made it a smooth transition and was a pro. She really stepped in to help me the day of, she even helped me with my veil last minute before walking down the aisle and with pinning up my dress when I couldn't find my bridesmaids. Two of our vendors started getting in a bad argument and she helped diffuse the situation. The rest of the staff was great too. They were professional and friendly to our guests and they kept the room clean and transitions seamless. - the "Casita" bridal suite - it is super cute and perfect for getting ready with your bridesmaids the day of. It even had Champaign and fruit when I arrived, a sweet unexpected surprise. They left us keep our stuff here during the wedding and collect them afterwards. - the food! It was amazing! Sometimes the food is not as good the day of an event compared to when you sampled it because it's made in large quantities but it was delicious! - their flexibility - we had so many questions and special requests and they were accommodating, patient and happy to help the whole time. They/ Becca added special items to the menu for us like an omelette station! They let us come over to view the place with our vendors and we even got to see it when another wedding was getting set up to help us envision the space since it was set up for a meeting the first time we saw it. They also let us drop stuff off a couple days before. - the location - beautiful drive up to the venue and great parking for guests. The mountains allowed our out of town guests to see a different beautiful side of San Diego. Not so great: - contract mishaps. We told them we didn't want to pay for shots or certain hard liquor but this must have gotten lost in translation during the contact switch. So this added a LARGE addition to our bill. We had our decision stated in email but the way it was written in the contract was easily misinterpreted so that was a huge bummer. - the ceremony spot we used, as well as the other one available, wasn't that private. The restaurant was right nearby. We expressed concern about this a couple times and were assured that the section of the restaurant that was near the ceremony spot would be closed off at that time. Well the restaurant was full that day and people were sitting right there. I was fully aware of it during the ceremony, hearing them behind us and aware of them watching. It took away from the moment and was not what I envisioned. - the golf course - of course we knew this coming in but the beautiful picture spots we saw from other weddings here weren't really available to us because of the time of our wedding. The golfers definitely got priority over the course. Our wedding was during the day and we were suggested to take photos after the wedding, but really I wouldn't be able to dance and eat all through the day knowing I had our wedding photos to take at the end of the day. There were so many other details I could go on and on but I think you get the point. Lovely wedding spot, lovely people. Highly recommend. read more

Our family had a event here last month. Working with the catering manager Chelsey was nothing short of professional an amazing! We had Many logistics that needed to be worked out throughout our six hour event. Chelsea guided us and made awesome suggestions to make our event great. Rolling hills, insane shots off cliffs, creeks, waterfalls, fantastic views and great customer service. Pace was on time, people friendly, great customer service, and you can't beat the weather. Maderas is a gorgeous golf course and club. I don't play golf but I've been here for 2 weddings and a few weeks ago, I worked at a golf tournament. For the tournament they were very organized. When I got to my tee, they had a table, 2 chairs and a canopy for me. My "office" this day had a great view! The food afterwards was delicious. They had a buffet setup with many delicious options. The 2 weddings that I went too, were also amazing. One of them had the ceremony on the course and the other just outside the club. Food, drinks and service at both weddings were superb! read more
