Far be it from me to give a bad rap to a restaurant that's clearly struggling, but this was probably the worst meal I've ordered in a very, very long time. We were visiting Athens, Tennessee and wanted to explore the small downtown area. I looked to Yelp to find a spot for lunch and this restaurant came up with some decent reviews for the chicken salad and the pimento sandwiches. I can't speak for the quality of the chicken salad sandwich because my husband ate it and he's pretty forgiving, but the pimento cheese sandwich was horrible. To add insult to injury, I poured myself a lemonade soon to discover it was water. When I spoke to one of the teenage cooks/servers about it, she said she knew, but didn't know how to fix it. Delicious and Quick. A girl friend and I decided to shop downtown Athens and have lunch. The outside doesn't look like much but, as soon as we entered, the smells were delicious, the decor attractive, and ambiance friendly. We ordered sandwiches and selected the combo plan. For only $2.75 to make a sandwich a combo you select from fresh fruit, macaroni salad, or a variety of chips and get a bottomless drink. Many places a drink alone is over $3. It's a deli so you stand in line to order but then they delivered our meals and surprised us by also cleaning them away. Both our sandwiches and the fruit were fresh and delicious. Visited today with some guests from out of town. Cameron really rolled out the red carpet for us. He was so friendly and helped them navigate the menu since they were new to Athens. The lobster roll has become one of my favorite treats! Everything came out quickly and fresh. The dining area was clean but the lighting seemed dim. I didn't have room to try the new rolled ice cream so I will have to come back one afternoon just for dessert. Plenty of parking in the front but watch that two hour limits, if you plan to stay longer, park in the public parking to the left of the building. read more

I travel around East Tennessee on a daily basis for my job. I often end up in small towns where eating veg is simply difficult. Well, this adorable lil family restaurant was not only super nice with making a speciality order wrap for me, it was absolutely delicious! Got a french dip with extra meat, honestly couldn't tell it had extra anything, sandwich is very small and thin for the price. The taste was good, but I would have either preferred a larger sandwich or a smaller price. Seems like "Ladies Who Lunch" portions and prices. Maybe it was just the particular sandwich I ordered. I was shopping at a local antique shop and they recommended this restaurant. They said the chicken salad was awesome. I have to agree the chicken salad was great. The problem I had is when I went to get the rolled ice cream and wanted vanilla with strawberries and pineapple. She acted very confused and said they did not have pineapple. I asked for a couple other toppings and she still looked very confused and said we do not have those. I was confused because they were on the menu. I told her I would take strawberries with vanilla ice cream and if she could put some strawberry syrup on top she did not have strawberry syrup either. For having to pay almost $8 I should have gotten my money back because when I put the spoon into the roll of ice cream it shattered and was a bunch of crumbles. So stick with the hand dipped pre-made Mayfield ice cream or Don't get ice cream especially the rolled type. The local grocery store has a better chicken salad than these guys. Was extremely dry and had no creamy chicken salad texture. Decided to give these guys another shot because insane lobster rolls on the menu. Tried their lobster roll - it had good flavor but was missing the typical New England bun and butter on it. First time visit yesterday and was quite impressed. Had heard about the chicken salad sandwiches and I must say they are FANTASTIC! I love the fact that the chicken is actually chopped and you don't have to struggle with huge chunks of chicken in your sandwich. The bread was fantastic too. They have sandwiches, wraps, and subs. I got the combo which includes sandwich, chips, and drink....not too bad for $6.99. (the great chicken salad was worth that alone and FAR SUPERIOR to anything Jenkins has....) The place was spotless and they also sell pints of the chicken salad, potato salad, etc. You order at the window and they bring out your food. The only thing, I wasn't sure if we were supposed to clear our own table or what....I only saw one small trashcan so I couldn't figure that out. But staff was really nice. Atmoshere could use a bit more touch up (too much brownish for me on the walls), but I love the vintage photos of Athens on the walls. Thankfully I could HEAR my dining partner and we didn't have to battle over a loud jukebox. I will be back! read more
