I found this place while looking for coffee on the way back to Seattle after Deception Pass, and honestly this place was such a gem. I'm usually a little skeptical of themed coffee shops because I worry the drinks will be too gimmicky or way too sweet, so I almost skipped it. So glad I didn't. I was genuinely impressed. The cake was so moist and not overly sweet at all, and the drink was sweet but still had a real coffee flavor instead of just tasting like sugar. The decor and overall vibe were also really cute, and everyone working there was so nice. You can tell a lot of thought goes into the whole experience, and the quality of the drinks and desserts actually backs it up. I'd definitely come back and try a different theme next time. Oh my gosh, the cutest place every! They have a new theme every month and when I went it was "Wonderland". Everything was Alice in Wonderland themed, from the baked goods to the drinks! Every month is a different theme in the bakery and you'll never get the same thing twice (unless you're lucky!) Octobers theme was Harry Potter and they went above and beyond. Food and decor was 1000/10 !!! I tried the golden snitch (butterbeer cap pop) , blood bag (strawberry lemonade), and the Dexter (cinnamon sugar donut with caramel syringe). Everything was decorated sooo nice and tasted amazing !! The month of Novembers theme is Game of Thrones. Once again, they out did themselves with the decoration ! I tried their dracarys (sparking orange juice, lemonade and strawberry puree), the Jon Snow ( double chocolate Oreo brownie cookie), purple potion (blue raspberry guava lemonade, and a wildfire (green apple lemonade in a potion bottle ) !! The Mad Better Bakehouse is always interesting and entertaining. I really like how they pick a theme and base all their offerings on that theme. The latest theme is Harry Potter. I am a Harry Potter fan, having read all the books AND seen all the movies. So, I enjoyed looking at all the different Harry Potter memorabilia around their store. This visit I decided to indulge myself with a Victor Krum(ble) coffee cake and a Mandrake Mocha. The coffee cake had an apple filling and the mandrake mocha featured a mint leaf floating on top. I enjoyed my mocha and coffee cake sitting at the window. I was able to enjoy the view outside while listening to the soundtrack inside. A fairly enjoyable break from my hectic day. read more

A changing theme coffee house and bake shop, GENIUS!!!! Alice in Wonderland has been an obsession since I was a kid so I was in awe from the second I walked in!!! Such a beautifully crafted theme!! On Thursday 4 May 2023, when I was visiting my Grandma in Oak Harbor, she suggested we come and try a cookie from Mad Batter Bakehouse. She had received a birthday coupon from an acquaintance for a cookie, so we came and I got to pick out the item. The parking area is shared and we were fortunate to find a spot as Grandma said no to walking a block or more to get a cookie. The baked goods are on display just inside the entrance and footprints on the ground show the path to follow to place one's order. I went with a Star Wars-themed Jedi cookie, which was blue velvet and white chocolate. At payment/turning the coupon in, a couple that entered the store after me ignored the footprints on the ground and tried to cut in front of me in line. The worker had been paying attention and helped me next, not the people trying to cut in front of me. She took a name for the coupon redemption, I gave her my Grandma's name. We took the cookie back to the house to eat it for dessert at lunch. The inside of the cookie was soft and the outside golden/browned and perfectly lightly crunchy. White chocolate chips were still melty, and the blue velvet flesh of the cookie was not too sugary and did not stain our teeth. I knew that the Mad Batter was my kind of place within 10 seconds of walking in the door...across a red carpet and through a curtain of shimmery gold strands. At the moment, the whole place is movie-themed from the decorations to the pastries to the coffee drinks. I went with a Godfather (a iced mocha with extra kick) and a 007 (a peach cake drizzled with bourbon caramel) and both were even better than I expected. They can make "normal" coffee drinks too, and those are just as good, if a little less fun. If you are already eating in that old downtown corridor, this is a must stop to see and get dessert. They have 5-8 treats they hand make - all of them are incredible in creativity and quality. They are not cheap treats - but I always felt like I got my money's worth. They often sell out before they close so don't wait too late if you want the best selection. Every 5-6 weeks the theme of the treats (and the entire shop) changes. Keeps things exciting. I have never had anything here I did not enjoy. An exciting addition to the downtown Oak Harbor lineup. Stopped in after they've been open a few days, and was greeted with a clean cafe/bakery/creamery. Ordering was a little chaotic and confusing as there was only a menu for drinks, with a few cookie options set out (though no prices). Ordered a lavender lemonade and a blue lagoon energy drink, and both were quite good. The vibe is good and very unique to the area. There are a couple seating areas for maybe six people in total. More of a grab-and-go type cafe right now. Overall a good place! They still need to work out their flow and some kinks, but I think there is good promise for a fun bakehouse. read more

So excited that this place opened up! It's in downtown Oak Harbor and it's just what that area needed. I've gone two days in a row and found that they had different flavors each day. I'm not complaining though, each cookie I've had was delicious! I should mention that my ideal cookie is crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside - which all of these cookies were. They have a few drinks (coffee variations and lotus drinks) and ice cream scoops available (I didn't see any cones, but they offer cups). OMG so good. I went in on a whim and upon walking in I was in love with this place. I ordered a 2 cupcake (aka the sorting hat), a lemon bunt (aka the Voldermort), and a blue berry crumble (aka the Hufflepuff). I took a quick taste of the cupcake frosting and was soooooo pleased. It was smooth and had a nice chocolate flavor. The cupcake was tender and filled with a vanilla cream. After tasting my cupcake I had to sneak a taste of the other two pastries and I was so happy with what I purchased. The lemon bunt had a great lemon flavor with a dollop of lemon frosting and the blueberry crumble is not too sweet with tons of berries. The ladies working were super friendly and the store is beautiful and comfy inside. Only negative is there isn't a ton of seating, but who cares when you can make desserts like that! read more

My daughters 3rd birthday was over the weekend. Being busy with grad school, working in the yard, and trying to prepare for family coming up to visit, I didn't have time to bake a cake for her. She specifically asked for a Unicorn Cake. I happen to walk in to Mad Batter during a walk I had with my sister, for some sibling time and catch up, and I nonchalantly asked if they happen to bake cakes too. They sure did, and they were willing to make the cake even with the short notice they were given. It just happened they didn't have any orders at the time. Definitely best to give advanced notice. I am beyond grateful for the generosity and time it took to make this amazing cake! The baked good were good and the coffee was "okay" and the Pirate theme was fun. For a nightclub. Not for a coffee shop/bakery. The windows are covered in black fabric so it is ridiculously dark in the shop. Very few lights left my husband asking twice where the sugar was.
