Paid $2500 in repairs for break calipers and installing a side mirror and told check engine light was addressed...but No. They drove out to get my car and left a loaner. I was impressed! Please do yourself a favor and make sure you get a 2nd opinion/estimate prior to having them do work. They were going to install a new alternator in my vehicle and advised that they would let me know if I needed a new tensioner once they inspected it. After inspection they said a new tensioner was needed and it would be 3 hours labor for a total of $576. I called 2 other places (including a dealer) and they both said if you are replacing the alternator there really was no additional labor to replace the tensioner pulley as it only has 2 bolts. I actually called Macs back and discussed this with them and they wouldn't budge off their price. Long story short I took it to another shop (pretty big outfit) and saved $475 (This was the Troy Location) read more

Charged me $74 for a diagnostic on a battery that I just installed and told them not to run a diagnostic on. Then when I asked for a refund since I told them NOT to run the diagnostic they charged me for, they lied to my face and said the diagnostic was for something else and I couldn't be refunded even though they didn't give me any of the results from the diagnostic because that would be admitting they did exactly what I told them not to do. What is the point of making an appointment for drop off? Was told when got there they only do drop off and no waiting for your oil change, REALLY???? Why did I bother to make an appointment, rush around all morning to finish other business only to be told oh no, it's drop off only... that would have been VERY good to know because now my Monday is shot to hell, guess NO afternoon errands getting done. Macs has ALWAYS gone above and beyond to assist with my automotive needs. The rewards program is nice, saved $40.00 on oil change and with coupon saved $50.00 on the 1,100.00 charge to problem service my other vehicle. Wow, these guys were a God send! Car broke down on I-64 this past weekend with my entire family and Mac's was the closest repair shop that was open. Lucky for us. Took my car in early morning Saturday and let them know of my conundrum. Our service manager was Brandon H. and he really took care of us. He quickly diagnosed the problem and worked with the technician to get us repaired immediately, despite not having an appointment. We were in crisis mode and the folks at Mac could have taken full advantage of the situation. They did not, they were beyond accommodating and beyond fair in what they charged for the repair. I was truly humbled by their humanity in dealing with our situation. We are forever grateful. The mechanic, Ben, fixed the problem properly and we were able to trek the 4 hour drive home without incident. Brandon and Ben are a reminder that there are still good, decent, people out there doing business. I will absolutely recommend Mac's Auto Center to anyone that is willing to listen. read more

I've had several bad experiences here, enough that I will not go back, or recommend them again. At first, I chalked it up to mistakes, but they just keep getting worse and worse as far as quality and cost go. The actual dealer quote for a repair (replacing starter motor, for instance) has been significantly lower in many cases, and the repairs are actually solid, where as at Macs I've found myself having to make time for a test drive, and to return, since they never get it right anymore. I've had to return on three occasions with three different cars to have them re-repair or fix what they were paid to fix in the first place: The last time my daughter brought her car in and when I found out how badly it was running afterwards, I brought it back myself. They charged me another $200 for diagnosing and tire rotation, (?) and even as the issue got worse they failed to address it. read more

Friendly customer service and reasonable prices. They even go the extra mile and vacuum our vehicles and clean their windows when they finish their work! Won't be taking our vehicles anywhere else now that we've found this gem! EDIT: Had to add my latest experience with Mac's! Shortly before Thanksgiving (2013), our SUV made a "clunk" sound, and immediately stopped working. Yikes! It's our main family car, and I love "Big Red" (Our kids named him. Yes, him!). We were going to visit family on Thanksgiving, and without our car, we were going to have to do some major reworking. We had Big Red towed to Mac's in Troy, and crossed our fingers that it wouldn't be too bad. No such luck, the engine was shot. The clunk we heard had been a retaining ring that was holding one of the pistons breaking, and when it went, the piston became lodged in the cylinder and that's was all she wrote. Not something we could have foreseen or done anything to prevent, but that's small comfort when you're left without a car! Now, we had to think about what was best, given the circumstances. A new car was out due to budgetary concerns, not to mention the fact it was right before Christmas. Patrick (service manager and a great guy to work with) let my husband know that a brand new engine was also going to be too expensive, given that we were talking about a 2006 Cadillac SRX that had 100K+ miles on it. Oh no! Was it the end of Big Red? Absolutely not! Patrick was able to get a used motor that had 67K miles on it (35K less miles than the dead one, woohoo!), if we were interested. Heck, yeah, we were interested! Not only did Mac's get Big Red back in shape (thanks, Mark!), but did it in time for our Thanksgiving trip, and all for a cost that was more than HALF what a comparable used car would have been. Not only that, Big Red was washed and shiny when they brought him out to us. All that, and Mac himself even took a video of poor Big Red up on the lift that our kids thought was super cool. Overall, absolutely stellar service - I've been going to Mac's for years, and I actually drive well out of my way in order to take all of my vehicles there. They are an honest group of guys, are timely, and go the extra mile to ensure that their customers are always satisfied. Over the past couple of years, I have had thousands of dollars worth of repairs done there. They have always backed up their work, and will repair any missteps for free. Once, my wife had to bring her truck in multiple times to find an elusive leak in our spare tire. They patiently dealt with it each time, and ended up fixing the issue at no additional cost. The most important thing is that you can trust them to tell you the truth, which is rare in a repair shop nowadays. I'd put my word out and recommend them to anyone. Highly recommended! THE WORST Experience ever!!! I told my wife to take her car in to see why the check engine light came on. WHICH AUTOZONE DOES FOR FREE. they ended up charging her for $115 engine diagnostic and nothing was wrong. Normally I do all of our mechanic work but her car is under the car max warranty so I said take it in. Then they were trying go get her to spend over $1000 on a oil change and tires that she didn't even need yet. Pisses me off when mechanics take advantage of women. read more

I purchased a vehicle from my parents for my newly driving teen. What better way to know a vehicle has been taken care of right? Well it's had a cascade of problems, my parents used Mac's quite a bit, but not exclusively. I mistakenly took the vehicle to another shop that potentially mis-diagnosed one of the problems as a fuel pump issue. Not even a month after that work, the battery light came on, so I got a new battery from a local auto parts store. Turns out it was the alternator, and I had to have the vehicle towed to Mac's where they not only replaced the alternator, they called the manager of the auto parts store and got me my money back on the battery. Another 2 wks later, engine light comes on. Take it back to Mac's turns out catalytic converters needed replaced. Catalytic converters are on back order nation-wide, it was supposed to take a couple weeks but by some miracle they got it done in half that time. Bill and Nathan are the absolute best! I don't know much about cars and Bill takes the time to explain things to me in such a genuine, caring manner! He is not the least bit condescending or annoyed. Does Mac's land on the mid-high end of pricing? Maybe, maybe not, but you cannot beat their service, their quality of work, their knowledge, or their outstanding warranty (remember I said I went to another shop? Their warranty was 90 days - Mac's is 3 YEARS). As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for, and there is no price for peace of mind. I will be a Mac's customer for life. read more

BEWARE! Went to Macs to get a quote on front brake installation. I received 2 other quotes prior to going in, their quote was almost 3 times the highest quote. I asked why it was so much and was told the parts for my car are very expensive..(Toyota, lol) I asked if I could have the parts delivered from Advanced Auto and they said they will not take outside parts. I get that, but when I showed the sales rep that the parts they were quoting at almost $500 were less than $175 at both Advanced and Autozone. I was told the price is the price. While I was there, there was a woman next to me and the sales rep told her it was going to cost her $425 to have a battery installed in her Hyundai. She was an older lady and when she responded by saying that is very expensive the sales rep replied by trying to scare her. Saying things like you could be stuck somewhere in the middle of the night, stranded and it could be dangerous but thats up to you . Almost all local auto parts stores will install batteries for free and the battery is at most $175?? So why $250 to install a battery? I will never go back again, if you choose to I would get a quote and look up the parts to see how much they are over charging you. read more

Recently, I had issues with my rear Differential and along with a careful examination, found that it needed replacement. I am very disappointed in this place of business. We are new to the area and read positive reviews prior to taking our vehicle to Mac's Auto Center for repairs. This was the first time we took our vehicle to this business. We thought we were dealing with honest good people. We had minor repairs done, which ended up costing us $590.00. When I questioned the bill and asked about the labor rate, I was told the repairs took approximately an hour to maybe an hour and half to complete. We were charged $345.71 for labor, which at one hour and half would be about $230 an hour for the labor rate. These were minor repairs!!! Putting in spark plugs, changing ignition wires and changing a fuel filter. The parts price much higher than the local Advanced Auto Parts. You expect to pay a little higher at a garage, but you don't expect to see the mark up at between 75-100%. When I pointed out the charge, I was told that we were given an estimate prior to the work being done, which is untrue. We were given an estimate of the diagnostic fee, which was $100 dollars. We were not given an estimate of the work. If you are someone who is familiar with car repairs, you understand that what I am saying is true, we were gauged and it is very disappointing, because most of experiences in our new home area have been very positive, this one was not a good experience. I do not recommend taking your vehicle for repairs to this garage. YOU WILL BE OVER CHARGED! read more
