I contracted MacNeil Glass Co. to replace the wheels on my sliding glass balcony door. The wheels had been grinded down so badly that the door would no longer slide at all. The metal frame of the door had started to come apart, so I needed that fixed as well. I also needed a new latch to lock the door. I called about 7-8 other glass companies and general contractors, and they all said that they couldn't do this job. Either they were too busy or did not have the expertise. This is a 6' x 8' piece of glass (it's very heavy)--one guy who came to look at it was even afraid he would break the glass. So I was very happy when John MacNeil came out to look at the door and said that he could fix it. He said he would call me back with a quote. About a week went by and I hadn't heard back so I called and the lady who answered the phone said she would check with John. She called me back later same day and quoted $720. It was a lot more than I wanted to pay, but since nobody else could do it I didn't have much of a choice. The next week John sent out two of his guys to do the job. They were young, but knew what they were doing. They were responsible and cautious of making sure the glass didn't break when taking it off the track. They took their time and still were able to finish the job in about 1 hour. Very nice guys too. The old plastic rollers were completely broken apart, and they replaced them with new metal rollers. It has been several weeks and the door slides really well (like brand new). The latch they brought with them didn't fit, so they told me they would have to come back to finish the job. About 3 weeks later they called me and came over to install the latch. It works well. Overall: 4 stars--deducting 1/2 star for some lack of responsiveness (they seem very busy) and 1/2 star for the cost being very high for a 1 hour job. Good results though. read more

Efficient and fast replacing glass. Reasonably priced. Filled holes with silicon based product in the wood and around the framing. Terrible decision. It's sticky and peels off. Had to scrap it all out and replace with wood filler. Not very professional doing the job in this fashion. read more

The head contractor was professional and seemed thorough during the assessment. I waited for a quote, an update on the work order, or any type of communication for about 2 months. After 4-5 calls to the receptionist telling me they were unsure and would have him call me back, which he never did, I had enough and cancelled my quote/work order. I can't comment about the trade man's skill and how finished products turn out because it never progressed that far. Perhaps he was too busy to take on another job. I had used MacNeil Glass in Natick for many years. I was very pleased with their work and recommended them to several of my friends and neighbors. Apparently they have become so busy that they do not deliver as promised and don't even have the courtesy of returning my phone calls. I can understand delays but when weeks roll on without providing an update as to when the job would be completed is inexcusable. I would have given them 1 star but they did come out here twice to measure and template so I cannot understand why they did not follow through and just continued to tell me how busy they were instead of addressing when my job would be cut and installed. Not that it should make any difference, but this was a pricey job and not just a small piece of glass that they put aside for something bigger. When business softens, they will be looking for all the good customers just like me that went elsewhere! read more
