One of the most knowledgeable and honest British mechanic I've ever met. Very reasonable prices and unbelievable value for the money.

Ferguslie Garage

Ferguslie Garage

After some bad experiences with local garages I was dubious when it came to Ferguslie Garage, a…read moresmall outfit hidden away on a side street in the small village of Sandbank, but I have to say I've been impressed by the quality of service and the competency of the mechanics at this garage. I took my car to them after hearing a scraping noise from the front passenger side wheel. It turns out that in the process of replacing a wheel bearing another garage managed to damage the large metal bracket that holds the wheel in place. I was told that it would be an expensive part to replace and would likely cost several hundred pounds (indeed, the part alone costs £300 from the cheapest supplier). As you can imagine, I was not pleased and given my track record with local garages my initial thought was "here we go again". Not so. The owner of the garage quickly advised me that I could find the part very cheaply online. He was right. I found a suitable part for just £22, direct from a breaker's yard. I showed him the part and he confirmed that it was right. I then contacted the breaker's yard and was told that they can't ship to my address - it seems that Dunoon is classed as the Scottish Highlands despite being just 30 miles from Glasgow. The owner of Ferguslie Garage leapt to my rescue again, offering to let me ship the part to his address on the other side of the water. Result - a job that should have cost in the region of £350-£400 cost me just £65. Since then I've taken the car back to Ferguslie Garage on three separate occasions. On each occasion they've performed the work quickly and competently and the cost of the service has been very reasonable. On one occasion there was an issue that persisted after they completed their repairs. It wasn't their fault, but even so they took the car back the next day and put it right free of charge. After being burned one too many times I'm reluctant to say that I trust any garage completely, but Ferguslie Garage has gone a long way to restoring my faith in an industry that seems to be dominated by scam artists and cowboys. The owner seems willing to go the extra mile to help his customers and his staff are both polite and knowledgeable. If you are in the Dunoon area and need work done on your car, Ferguslie Garage would be my recommendation.

As they are not open at the weekend (or Mondays) I had to leave my van on site. I left messages on a mobile number, tried the main number and left a message on their website but couldn't actually speak to anyone until they opened on Tues. Instead being helpful I was met with a grumpy owner who told me he was closed for trade (despite the website saying otherwise and he was trading when I went past later in the week). I am not impressed and strongly recommend you don't use them.

Probably the worst garage I've ever dealt with…read more After my 2 year old Smart car broke down, I phoned this garage up, told them the problem, and asked if they'd be able to fix it. They said Yes no problem, so as I was 100 mile away from the mercedes dealership, and the car only has a two year warranty, I chose to use a local garage for what should have been an easy car repair, of a common fault with smart cars. I asked the AA to recover the car to the garage. At first the garage phoned me, to advise that the tyres were at 3mm tread level and did i want them to replace them, which I considered partly helpful, but partly as though they were looking for extra work. After phone calls back and forth with the garage over the following 7 weeks, I was constantly told, "we can't find the reason that your car wont start, but we're checking various forums". After 7 weeks had passed, and still no car, I advised the garage that I would get the AA to recover the car again and this time take it to the professionals. The garage owner, Mr Andy Cooper advised that he would not release the car until I paid him the £680 invoice which he said it had cost him to try and get the car running again. At the same time, he advised the only way to fix the car would be to replace the engine. Note. The car was 25 months old, and had done 29,000 miles. The problem which had happened was a common fault, of which had previously happened another 3 times and been repaired within a few hours by the main dealerships before. To cut a long story short, the garage blocked the car into their yard for another 3 months, I could not afford to pay their bill, and was advised not to pay. The garage owner told me to pay him the money, and try to claim it back from the court. I had to stop paying the finance agreement. The car was eventually recovered by baliffs. When the main dealer had the car in their workshop, they concluded it did not need a new engine, and the car was running again within 1 hour.!! Unfortunately at this point, as the baliffs had collected the car, it was no longer mine to use. The garage owner was arrogant, unprofessional, and generally not worth dealing with. If you choose to use this garage, then i wish you luck, if it's anything more than just changing a tyre.

When I got the car I found a lot of rust which should have meant it failed. I appealed against the MOT and the inspector found several failure points dur to corrosion and other things. After leaving the car for two days and paying a fairly reasonable £140, I drove away, only to find that the problem hadn't been fixed. I returned the following day and was assured that the work had been done, but agreed to leave the car so they could check it. I returned later that day to be told that the issue wasn't as I'd thought, but instead there was a problem with my brake discs and calipers. I left the car with them for another three days, returned, paid a further £220, and drove away, only to find that the problem still had not been resolved. After taking the car back for the third time I was told that there was only one explanation - the car needed an entirely new gearbox and would cost in the region of £800-£1000 to fix. I drove away disheartened, but determined to raise the money to pay for the "necessary" repairs. Now, I don't know much about cars, but I'm not a fool. Before laying out that kind of money, I decided to seek a second opinion, so I took the car to Glasgow and had it examined by a garage that specialised in my make of vehicle. Imagine my surprise when they told me after just fifteen minutes that the problem was the original issue Cowal Garage was supposed to have fixed. I assured them that it couldn't be so - the part in question had been replaced less than a month earlier by Cowal Garage. They told me that they were confident that they were right, so confident, in fact, that they would replace the part and if the problem persisted I wouldn't have to pay a single penny. Turns out, they were right. Cowal Garage, it seems, had charged me for work they hadn't carried out - and it gets worse. After completing the work the mechanic told me I would need to get new brake discs very soon. Cowal Garage had charged me for two lots of work they hadn't completed. Of course, when I returned to confront the owner, he had plenty of answers. He claimed that the brake discs had been "cleaned", not replaced, and that he must have replaced the original part with a faulty part. He went on to refuse to refund my money as "work had been done" and insisted that I should have given him the chance to "make it right". Fortunately I have now found a very good garage in the area and will entrust my vehicle to them in future. Please don't make the mistake of trusting Cowal Garage with your car.
