I've dealt with Dan at Macchiarini Creative Design for some time as an artist displaying my work in his shop his Father founded. Generally I've had positive experiences and have sold a couple of paintings from exhibits I had there. I considered myself a friend having known his sister for over 20 years and Dan for over maybe 7 years. Although I find the work and design in the shop exemplary my last experience with them was not gracious. I took two pieces of obsidian in to be attached to some art work. One stone was broken which happens with obsidian. One piece was completed as I talked to Dan about. But upon receiving it I saw it wasn't polished on one side as I'd requested. As it was drilled and epoxied to the image to now take it off the art work to polish represents a challenge to not damage the stone and art work. The thing that really gets me is that it is made to look like my fault to the work not being polished as I requested, that I did not request it to be polished and that, from a text message, "You are inventing reality for your own purposes..."Donald Trump Syndrome"! It was and is as I texted u...You NEVER stated that wanted the dull side polished! I know I stated I wanted the dull side polished! When I gave them the stone three sides were polished because of the original way it was to be mounted. We both agreed to change it to better serve my vision. That was when I asked them to polish the side in question. And from my understanding Dan said they could. Customer service, I do not consider it favorably. It I feel is often like we're busy and don't have the time. Be very sure to get in explicit detail and instructions as to what you want repaired or done so as not to end up with a product that like mine that has cost me both money and time as well as what I deem an insult saying I did not make such a request comparing me to Donald Trump. read more

The lady in the shop was pleasant and Emma designed me a really nice engagement ring of white gold and a tear drop amethyst. I was really happy with it, so happy I decided not to send the ring back because the size was not correct. I would get it fixed, later, when we get the wedding rings. About a year later, the amethyst falls out. We bring the ring back to the shop, where there is a rather grumpy gentleman at the counter who promises us to put in a new stone. Then the ring comes with a beautiful, new, deep purple amethyst. But the white gold is now black...a few texts go unanswered, till I text on 415-982-2229: - Hi, I got my ring back last week but the gold is black now - Didn't change gold at all...just needs to be polished... The ring wasn't black when I left it in his shop...I just read the review of G R., seems I am not the only one. Mr Grump is doing an excellent job at chasing customers away...and spoiling what should be a pleasant memory of an engagement ring... I am SO thankful that I found Macchiarini Creative Design. I had a very custom project that needed a custom casting. I had called other galleries and artists and no one wanted to help. I had a plaster casting of my fathers hand and I wanted to have it bronzed. It was very delicate and my father had since passed away so it was totally irreplaceable. I found Macchiarini Creative Design and showed them the plaster statue. Dan walked me through the process of what would need to be done. He gave me a good expectation of the costs, options, and how long it would take. He sent me updates on the project as it went along. He would send photos and let me know what choices I had for finishes and patinas and how to best display it. He was incredibly helpful and his brilliant artistic eye helped to guide my choices. Wow. So I went to this place to repair my earrings because the post fell off of the earring itself. I thought this would be an easy fix and decided to go with this place because they're cheaper than any other place I checked with, and I figured it was an easy job, and hard to mess up. Well I was wrong--u get what u pay for. This guy ruined the metal of the earring so it was irreparably damaged. They weren't sterling silver, and he never even asked me, but just assumed they were and sandpapered off part of the metal so they now look stained. The soldering job was sloppy and easily seen by the naked eye. He made the post shorter, so that one is higher than another. And the best part was that he put the earring on backwards, even after I thoroughly discussed (and showed him) how they were supposed to go. When I told him all this he got really angry and said "WHAT ARE U SAYING, U WANT YOUR MONEY BACK!?" And I said yes. So he slammed the money down on the table and told me to leave. When I tried to calmly talk about it he said that he didn't want to hear it. I told him that he had poor business practices and left. This place is just a bunch of shitty handmade jewelry anyway. Avoid at all costs. I'm sure u can do better. read more

I just finished the Beginner Fabrication class with Emma and Julia. I tend to be a clumsy person, so I was skeptical at how I would perform in the class. However, Emma and Julia were so patient, helpful, and friendly that my fears were alleviated. The classes were so fun, educational, and productive! I became proficient in so many techniques that I thought I would never be able to learn. In the end, I developed the confidence and ability to work on a couple of my own, self-directed creations. Although I've considered posting reviews on Yelp before, I have never felt compelled to shout from the rooftops about how marvelous a buying experience was until now. My fiance spotted Macchiarini's --a treasure of a shop in North Beach--while strolling down Grant Street. We had been on the hunt for a jewelry shop to custom make our wedding rings for quite some time. Macchiarini's turned out to be the perfect place. We do not consider ourselves "modernists" but Dan, the owner of the shop and creator of a huge and impressive collection of modernist jewelry, didn't mind. He listened to our ideas about the kind of rings we wanted and worked with us until we had exactly what we wanted. He also gave us a great price (half of what another shop in NB wanted to charge us). Not only are the rings gorgeous, but we also have a whole video and snapshots of our participation in the ring making process! Dan took us through the whole procedure--choosing the metals and stones, modifying the wax molds, "pouring" the rings, putting the melted metal in the centrifuge, buffing them out, EVERYTHING! There is no way we would have received this kind of unique experience anywhere else. How many couples can say that they poured their own wedding rings? And they were cast in the same mold, a nice symbol of our future together! Dan seriously made this experience amazing. Five stars is not enough! read more

I went here for my wedding ring because they were just about the only place in the bay willing / able to work with wood, plus it's a really neat looking shop. I gave them a drawing and they worked with me to make a ring similar to my design. Although the first one wasn't quite on the mark, mainly because of a miscommunication, I think, with the lapidary, they started over and made me a new ring. My fiance and I created our wedding rings last weekend with Emma and Dan, the father daughter duo that own this shop and studio. We had a fantastic experience! Emma was so responsive and informative from the beginning. I knew right away I wasn't even going to call around to other businesses. We wanted to work with them. She also called and checked in the week before our appointment to see if we had any questions and knew what time to arrive. That was greatly appreciated. We worked with Dan for the first day of our workshop and the depth of his knowledge and skill is immediately apparent. Not only was Dan a great teacher, but having been raised in San Francisco, he is a wealth of information and history about the area. There are long periods of time while you are filing your wax mold to the perfect shape and Dan kept us very entertained with his humor, good stories and sensitive spirit. It was so special to create a single mold that we could use to cast both of our rings. We brought rings from my fiance's side of the family that we wanted to melt down and use in our bands. The rings we brought we all yellow gold and I really wanted a white gold band. Dan worked with us to alloy the yellow gold and get a shade that was much closer to white gold. The second day we worked with both Dan and Emma. The first thing we did was cast our rings in their centrifuge and it was a thrilling experience! I loved getting to use the blow torch :) Emma helped guide us on how to best file, shape and make the finishing touches on our rings before polishing. We had a couple of sizing issues that required a technical fix and she quickly took care of it. Her expert advice was always appreciated and spot on. At the end of the second day we walked out of there with not only two beautiful and unique rings that are an expression of who we each are, but also an experience that will stay with us forever. It was so special to forge the rings that we will wear for the rest of our lives. It felt like Emma and Dan were family by the end of it and we are looking forward to taking some classes there in the future! read more

My partner and I took the weekend wedding ring class and it was amazing. We knew we wanted to make our own bands, but wanted more creative and complex designs. We had a consultation with Emma and designed our rings together. I wanted a gemstone and Emma found me a beautiful stone and had it cut to my specifications. She communicated with me about it and kept me involved. We took our two day casting class about a month later. The first day was with Dan and he is so knowledgeable and experienced. He took us through the whole wax mold process and created my setting. The next day, Emma helped us cast and we finished our stones. We had a couple of snafus along the way and Dan helped fix them and make our rings beautiful!! Emma finished the setting of my stone and we picked it up! We loved the experience of making our own rings and the artistic design process. It felt like stepping back in time and creating a masterpiece. I stumbled onto Macchiarini Creative Design while exploring North Beach on a trip to San Francisco. Danny Macchiarini and his daughter Emma welcomed me and told me the story of the business, showing me books and photos featuring Danny's father Peter's work as a pioneering modernist jewelry-maker and sculptor. I was moved by the three-generation tradition that is still vitally alive here. An unusual faceted stone in the display case caught my eye, and Danny explained that it was rutilated quartz (clear crystal with needle-like inclusions of a mineral composed mainly of titanium dioxide), cut in an "op cut," a special cut his father had used for some of his jewelry. Danny had thought the secret to this "op cut" was lost when the lapidarist with whom his father had worked died. But, he related, he found the specifications for the cut after his father's death, when he was going through his father's effects. Later, he was able to find a lapidarist who could execute the "op cut," and now he is able to use it again in his jewelry, as his father did. I loved the stone -- it was so striking and unusual -- and decided to commission a ring using this cut in a silver setting. It took Danny a couple of months to finish the ring, and I was delighted when it was delivered to my home in Austin. I now have a unique piece of the heritage of San Francisco and North Beach, as an incubator of artists and artisans, and of the Macchiarini family. It's a ring I will always cherish. I visited Macchiarini Design on a tour of the neighborhood. My son was excited to learn about the dragon coins, and we came back and he made one. That experience of allowing and encouraging him to make the coin on his own was fabulous. While we were there I was shown different designs. I fell in love with a halo like ring design and decided to have one made for me. I had no idea what kind of stone i wanted, but I knew that I wanted it done in white gold. Dan was simply awesome to work with. He sent me photos of the wax mold along with the different stones I had to choose from. I asked him questions and he politely answered. I listened to what he had to say and went with my gut. Today my ring arrived and it's more beautiful than I could have imagined. The ring definitely exceeded my expectations. I'm tickled to have a masterpiece created for me by Dan. It's a true treasure that I will enjoy wearing and passing along in our family many years down the road. The entire process took about 2 1/2 months. The process was really fun, and it was thrilling to receive the finished product today. My husband and I came across the Macchiarini shop one day during my visit to be with him in San Francisco from Australia. We weren't looking for rings that day but as we passed the window we both stopped and started finding things in the display that we liked. That day we were shown over 100 rings. And unlike the traditional 'set' styles, we were encouraged to find the parts of rings that we liked and design our own.
