I am a Roanoke College grad and have spent plenty of dinners at this Macados. The food is okay and the pricing is very reasonable. Usually we sit around the bar and the bar staff are pretty friendly. Main complaint would be the time it takes for us to order and get our food. Our last visit consisted of us waiting forty-five minutes for spinach and artichoke dip appetizer. When it gets packed, I've also had trouble reaching my server for anything additional after the meals are served or even to get the check at the end. If I had to choose any Macado's in the area I live in it would be the Salem location! Ate there today and our food was perfectly cooked, the waitress was amazing and fast and as always they exceeded our expectations! The service at the Salem location is mediocre at best. The food is usually pretty good and predictable. For some reason, the seating in the bar area is built for giants. I'm 6'1" and my toes barely touch the floor. I mailed in a comment card about the uncomfortable seats (who makes you use a stamp to mail in a comment card!?!?) and never got a response. Anyone under 6' should skip bar area seating at any Macado's unless you want your feet to go numb. Lots of dust on the memorabilia is less than savory. read more

While I have been to this place many times I only go when forced to choose something besides better places in the area. - wait staff are usually not knowledgable about the menu and what's on tap - it is a major ordeal to find out what beers are available. Last time (today) was told 'normal domestics and craft beers'. When I asked she guessed and I had to request that she go check on a one for me. You would expect that she would come back with a list of sorts but no her answer was ' it's just to much to keep up with'. Wait for for food is long and no one checks on table. This was a kitschy place. The staff was great especially seeing as how they were packed because it was 4th of July and they were the only place open in town. The food was great! We had Salsa con Queso and a Southwest Quesadilla, both were only $6.95 for their "Fiesta Feast". Not to mention a damn good margarita in a pint glass for only $3.95. Went with my family for my Mother's Day dinner and was seated very quickly. Our server finally came after we had been sitting for 5 minutes. She took our drink order and after another 5 minutes brought them back & said " I'll be back for your order" trust me we could have ordered right then. Once the food FINALLY came out we had no napkins and our drinks were empty, we asked her for refills and napkins and she apologized and said yes. She made 4 trips to the table behind us and never once returned with napkins or refills. When she did return she said " are y'all doing ok?" BLUF: Great Grub! This was our lunch spot on our final day of driving to our new assignment. We wanted an out of the way place with good food, and got exactly what we hoped for. The area was nice (near Roanoke College), and the weather was perfect for an outdoor meal. We opted to order "to go" and eat on a nearby park table. The staff was very courteous and professional. The server who took our order was very helpful while offering my daughter a vegetarian option (Black bean Quesadilla). My wife got the Shrimp Tacos, and I ordered the Cowpoke sandwich. We got Sweet Potato Fries on the side. The food was cooked perfectly and only took a little time to prepare. The staff packed it with all the necessities of a picnic table meal, and even through in some fresh water for our dog. Everything was tasty...and we left feeling full, but not stuffed. The restaurant was clean, and for an early afternoon there were quite a few people. There are some low star ratings here, and my experience doesn't agree. still a sad place. no wait staff. odd hour bar tenders who use it as a social time. crappy mixed drinks. dirty bathrooms. dirty seats, tables, forks, table tops & floors. no one cares that works there. the wait staff disappear to never return & you have to push them out of your way to get to the bathroom. a second and last chance was given. seems that many loud mouthed regulars have moved on! the exterior is rough and the chairs are hard, dirty and filled with dried food. on a quiet lunch, once you are outside you are forced to wait it out. wait for your order to be taken, food to arrive & then~bother the wait staff to bring you your bill. it smells out there like rotted food and a need for a good scrub down. peeeeeeyew. read more

The food is very good. The Wild Bill Burger with an onion ring is really original and tastes great. It is basically the reason I go there. Every other food choice there is good from what I've heard. The only downfall of this place is it's probably the slowest in Salem. Can take over 30 minutes for food to come out even when not busy. However, it's worth it for the burger. I was part of the birthday celebration for the party of six a previous commenter reviewed where there was bug in the fries and a dripping ceiling. FYI, don't sit under the skylight! Not prev. mentioned was the hour wait for our food after waiting 1hr 20. My brother ordered a virgin strawberry dacqueri, but the waiter had to check first, which took an additional 10 min. He must have been new, as when all drinks were served and food orders taken, my brother said after he disappeared into the kitchen, his food order wasn't taken. When the waiter reappeared, he took his order, which is why it probably took so long for the food. A quick scan of the surrounding tables revealed ketchup wasn't a permanent set up, so when I requested some for my husband's fries, he had to go "check" first. As a previous reviewer stated, we noticed "through the kitchen window" no one wore hairnets or gloves. I witnessed an employee took something out of a box on the floor & put it on some surface. Couldn't tell if it was a prep table or a grill top. My sister, who ordered the nasty Rueben, had ordered an extra one to take back to NOVA. After tasting the sandwich, she quickly told the waiter to cancel the to-go order which had been added to the ticket. After the bug incident, you would think the cost of one meal would have been removed from the ticket, but such wasn't the case. We were APPALLED we were charged for tea refills. We drank a LOT of tea waiting waiting an hour for our food! I don't think this restaurant would do well at all if Roanoke College wasn't there. If you like noisy "bar scene" hangouts and don't mind low quality food, this place is for you! Hated to give it a star, won't come back. read more

I can only give this Macado's 2 stars because they seem to have a problem keeping the music from being so loud in the eating area that 1) It makes you shout to your family members 2) It makes my son upset 3) The manager himself was at his own bar drinking and kept turning back up the music after his on duty manager turned it down because it was driving customers out of the dining area and to another restaurant. read more

Service: I've never had an issue with service at this location(the one at towers is plain horrible when it comes to service), however I usually just go to the bar section not sure about the primary restaurant. Bartenders are usually friendly and quick to get you a drink or some food. Food: Its ok to be honest, i've had better, but i go back for the beer, very good prices on the beer. read more

I ordered a Dr. Watson and a build your own sandwich with quite a few ingredients from over eats and received two plain bagels with turkey over an hour later when we live around the corner. We tracked our over driver who was at the restaurant less than 10 minutes after we ordered waiting on our food. The time prior when my roommate and I visited the restaurant, the bartender had no idea how to make our drinks, had to look at the menu to see how to make what we were asking for and still gave us the wrong thing. Went there for lunch. An old place with good food. They have a loooong menu which takes time to go thorugh. Most of the entrees are priced between 6 - 10 bucks. And the portion sizes are huge. So we came here with family and friends (a group of 5) on Sunday evening. I've been to other Macado's locations and thought this one would be no different. I will start with the good news: the service was outstanding! Our waitress was Jillian, and she made sure that we were well taken care of. We were there for about 2 hours socializing, and she made sure that we had drink refills and that the ones drinking alcohol always had a drink in front of them. My nephew, who is 10 really enjoyed the pizza. So for the bad? I wasn't too hungry so I ordered baked potato skins and they were not flavorful at all! They were burned inside and tasted like they had been sitting there for days. Everyone else in our party felt the same way about their dishes. My family and I have been going to macados for years now and until recently the service was always great. Today was the last time we will eat there. We had to order twice over the phone due to a "computer glitch" which we were completely understanding of as things happen. However when we got there to pick up the food, it was waiting on the counter with the tops open. Not only was the food cold, it was ALL wrong. Not a single thing was right. To make matters worse the guy at the desk tried saying "uh the guy over the phone asked for everything on all the burgers". My mom was the one ordering so he was either lying or thinking of someone else. When my dad asked for our food to be remade, they repeatedly obliged and due to the time it took we assumed they had been remade. However after getting our food, not only did they forget 3 different items, one of the burgers had only been warmed up. The only reason I gave 1 star is due to the manager trying his hardest to pick up the slack of the lousy employees at the counter. 1 don't lie to your customers, 2 don't make excuses, and 3 when it takes 3 times to attempt to get food and you still forget items and say it's all there, don't expect to have people return. The new workers are lazy besides 1 waitress and the manager which attempted to help while still trying to do their original job. I would NOT recommend going here until they fix their issues. read more
