Located in Salem, Virginia, this warm and cozy restaurant with window view to the Roanoke River is known for its popular burgers, especially the "Hot Rock," and other casual American fare like sandwiches, subs, hot dogs, onion rings, and crispy fries. Small in size, yet it has received many awards throughout the years, including "Best Burger" from The Roanoker Magazine in 2013. When I arrived to the place, I parked my Lexus over a bed of rocks parking lot, right outside, in the front area of the restaurant, and walked towards it. Inside, there was a small foyer with a bulletin board that had a copy of the menu, some Best of Salem Gold Awards, and some business cards from members of the community and customers of the restaurant. Then there was a bar on the left with a pool table on the right, and many Sports memorabilia on the walls of the establishment. It seems the owner was a great fan of the Virginia Cavaliers. Then in the back there was the dining room with a few tables, and a couple of them had a window view of the Roanoke River. Shortly after I arrived the friendly and very hospitable owner, came out of the kitchen and gave me a warm welcome, asking me to take a seat where I liked. I went and sat at one of the tables with the window view. To drink I ordered a Coke and to eat I ordered their famous "Hot Rock" Burger at the owner's recommendation when I asked him what he would recommend for this my first time dining there. The description on the menu of this burger was a "Hand formed fresh lean ground beef, provolone cheese, grilled onions, bacon, lettuce, tomato, mayo, hot peppers, Italian dressing on pita bread." It was served with potato chips and pickles, or for an extra price you could have it with crispy fries or onion rings. I ordered it with onion rings. While I waited, I looked around at all the pictures and memorabilia on the walls, and I looked through the window at the Roanoke River water flowing. I invite you to view my photographs accompanying this review to get a better sense of the place and the quality of their food. When the food arrived, everything tasted fresh and delicious. The burger was cut in half for convenience in eating it. The onion rings had a thick batter that kept them together and were easy to eat. The owner came by to check on me and see if the food was of my liking. We also talked about how he has owned and ran this restaurant for over 43 years. At first the restaurant was also opened at night, but now it's only open from eleven in the morning until two-thirty in the afternoon daily, and closed on Sundays. This makes it easier on him now that he's older, but you can tell he enjoys to continue running his restaurant and serving his customers. Because of its quality food, reasonable prices, and friendly service. I can see why this little restaurant is a local favorite for lunch or a casual meal and I completely give it my total support and urge you to do the same.

Located in a standalone building next to a 7-Eleven/Gas Station at 206 Apperson Drive, Cafe Express is a small, family-owned and operated New York Style Deli, run by a husband-and-wife team who immigrated from Nepal years ago and for 18 years have worked hard to make this small, unasuming deli, one of Salem's most precious culinary hidden gems. At first I didn't think nothing of it. Its storefront and location are not that impressive, but after driving by it many times, one day I just had to stop and try it out. From the very beginning, after parking in a space right in front of the deli, I was very impressed by its cleanliness. Its front windows and glass door were so clean and shiny that they were like mirrors reflecting their surroundings which in part was the gas station. But don't be fooled by this. In the past I've discovered exceptional eateries located at gas stations small strip malls. Once inside, I was fascinated by what I saw. There were three beautiful wooden relief carvings on the walls, framed magazine articles of the deli and its owners, framed Award Certificates including one from Yelp, a Buddha artwork on a plate, and a beautiful oil painting, painted by none other than by the owner himself. Both Prakash Malakar and his wife Sarojani gave me a warm welcome and made me feel at home. Eager to learn about their place of origin and culture I ask them about this.The owner explained how they came from Nepal, which is located in between China and India. Afterwards, his wife showed me the menu and the Specials written in colorful chalks over a chalkboard. I was attracted to their "Pastrami Royale and after she explained what items it had, I went ahead and ordered it along with some fries and a fountain softdrink. Not exaggerating, it was one of the most delicious sandwiches that I've ever had. After I finished eating I paid with one of my credit cards via my Google Pay which they accepted and left them a nice tip. It just so happened that I found out that the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck was going to be stationed outside the Parkway Brewing Company this past Wednesday during National Empanada Day and so I researched this place to learn more about it. I found out that Parkway Brewing Company is a craft brewery in Salem, Virginia. Established in 2012, it is well known for its distinctive ales and a vibrant tasting room with a large beer garden, live music, and food trucks. It operates a 30-barrel brewhouse, producing a large range of beers from IPA to lagers. Located near the Roanoke Valley Greenway, it attracts runners and cyclists, and has become a community hub for outdoor enthusiasts and beer lovers. When I arrived in my pearl white Lexus, the Empanada Nirvana Food Truck was already parked outside, but had not yet opened, so I went inside the brewery to explore its building. There I found a casual, low-key environment with an industrial-chick interior featuring a fireplace and garage doors that opened to the outdoors, to an area with picnic tables and sun umbrellas. Inside there were also several colorful modern murals and a wide counter where customers went to order and pay for their beers. They had several menus as well as display coolers with some of the beers being sold there. The friendly and knowledgeable young lady behind the counter did an excellent job explaining what they had, including the non-alcoholic options. While going to the restrooms, one passed by a window where you could see the brewhouse. Along the way there were also shelves filled with souvenirs of the place. In the room where the fireplace was, there was also a stage for live performances, which usually took place at night. I loved the ambiance and vive of the place and am looking forward to returning to one of their music live performance and some of their beers, and knowing that they also carry non-alcoholic ones will allow me to enjoy the evening and drive back home safely.

They already had menus with the new logo printed out, and their cooks remained the same, maintaining their elegant black professional attire. I was warmly greeted by a friendly lady employee as soon as I walked in. She remembered me from the last time I had dined there, and immediately detected my happy feelings of seeing the restaurant opened again. After being seated at one of the booths, she took my order. I had a Coke to drink, the Cancun Shrimp Chorizo Dip with Tortilla Chips as appetizer, and the California Burrito with added Chorizo as my main entrée. We've been loyal customers of Macado's for years and have dined at multiple locations, which is why this recent experience at Salem Macado's was so disappointing. We visited on a Monday and ordered our usual--the Hidenberg sub, which is advertised as serving four people. My wife prefers it as-is, while I simply request mine without onions and lettuce. When placing the order, we clearly communicated this to our waitress, Holly, who was attentive and put the order in correctly. However, when the food came out, it wasn't prepared as requested. Holly immediately noticed and took it back to be fixed. A few minutes later, she returned and informed us that while the cook was willing to accommodate the request, the manager had refused, stating, "we can't do that." When I spoke with the manager, Justice, I explained that since the sandwich serves four, it's reasonable to expect it can accommodate simple preferences for multiple people. His response was dismissive--questioning where it says the sandwich is meant to be separated--and he was noticeably unprofessional. What made the situation worse was him saying, in front of us and other patrons, "sorry sir, we aren't very accommodating." We were told this was due to corporate policy, which was surprising given that we've ordered this exact sandwich the same way for years without any issue. While the manager eventually agreed to remake it "this one time," he made it clear they would not do so again in the future. Overall, the experience was uncomfortable and disappointing, especially coming from a place we've supported for so long. The only bright spot of our visit was our waitress, Holly--she was friendly, attentive, and did everything she could to make things right. What a waste of money! How is this location still open? To go food is a joke. You have to check it every time and when you do they get mad then you show them it's wrong or missing something. I add a few sides of ranch and they charge me but never put it in bag. Ask for it when I pick up order and they wanna charge me after the last 12 to go orders I was charged for them and never received. Portions are smaller. I'd rather pay more and receive a decent amount than pay same and get smaller. Won't ever go there again. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would !!! HORRIBLE and RUDE service. Absolutely filthy and neglects overall hygiene . My friend and I have continuously had horrible experiences there and it is safe to say we are never stepping a foot there again !!! I love love love Macado's. They have a lot of subs and other options so not problem finding something good whether your a vegetarian or not. I get the Black Bean Quesadilla every time and I'm never disappointed. I always look forward to the friendly service and fantastic food. read more

My wife ordered the steak and shrimp with green beans. Her steak was cooked well, the shrimp had good seasoning, and she enjoyed her meal as well. One of our favorite surprises was the croissants they bring to the table. They were warm, sweet, buttery, and almost tasted like a dessert. We loved that the first ones were complimentary, and honestly, charging about a dollar each if you want more afterward isn't bad at all. They were good enough that I could see ordering extras. The service was also very good. Our food and drinks came out in a timely manner, and we never felt like we were waiting around for anything. Everything from sitting down to getting our food went smoothly. Overall, this was a great first experience with Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen. After having been selected as number 4 of Yelp's Top 50 most prolific Elites of 2025, a year when I was also awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Photographer of the Year Award at their Yelpies 2025 Award Ceremony, an event that honored the highest-performing Yelp Elites, and where last year I was awarded the Yelp Triad Squad Yelper of the Year Award, I decided that this year, as an All-Star Yelp Elite, I not only wanted to be the first to discover new restaurants and businesses, and bring them to the attention of the public, but also to uncover those found in hidden paths that for one reason or another have not reached the public in its totality. And Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen in the Valley View area of Roanoke, Virginia, is a perfect example. After receiving an email from Cheddar's corporate office wishing me a Happy Birthday and inviting me to dine at their restaurant near me and receive a Free Dessert such as their Legendary Monster Cookie, I decided to go and accept their kind offer. Once inside, their impressive giant ceiling fan coming down from the square high ceiling dome of their main dining room in the center of the restaurant seemed to set the elegant yet relaxed ambiance of this one-of-a-kind restaurant. I was greeted at the entrance by their friendly and welcoming hostess who lead me to a comfortable booth on the left side of the restaurant close to many windows that allowed in lots of wonderful light, perfect for capturing photographs of the food which I invite you to view accompanying this review. Almost immediately after I was seated, my server Tabitha approached with a plate filled with two of their famous Honey Butter Croissants that looked amazing and tasted even better. She had a wonderful personality and it was a pleasure to give her my order. To drink I had one of their Mango flavored hand-crafted Lemonade. To dine I had a hard time choosing from their extensive menu with colorful photographs of their main dishes. But I finally decided to have their Dijon Chicken and Mushrooms: Two grilled chicken breasts with honey dijon and sautéed sliced mushrooms over rice, with the two sides of a House Salad with Balsamic Vinaigrette dressing and Buttered Off-The-Cobb Corn. Not only were the portions very generous but the chicken was tender and juicy, a reflection of its high-quality and being perfectly grilled. Not sure if he was a mgr, owner or both, but he was super kind & highly professional. Randy discussed our last delivery order. He provided us with a tuna sub at no cost. Randy's sandwich looks & smells terrific. That's literally all it took to win us back. He apologized for the sub-par experience we had & made it right. THANK U to CAPROTTI'S & to him. Absolutely delicious subs, folks! *note: I never went to the site this business prompted me to go to so, no double dipping here. I'm always willing to pay a fair price for anything & double-dipping equals 'theft' in my book. Thx again CAPRIOTTI's AND to the gentleman that handled our order in-person today! So to start with, understand our order was placed directly by calling Caprrioti's. We did not order on DoorDash, though DoorDash did deliver. Not to mention their very dedicated staff who prepare the delicious food, service the customers by bringing them coffee or by refilling their cups with coffee and glasses with soft drinks, and by removing their empty plates to make room for some others with more freshly made food. But no matter how good and popular a restaurant may be, if it loses focus of the little things that make a big difference, it will not survive, and this is why requesting feedback is good, and following through on the feedback received is even better. I used to faithfully enjoy my weekend breakfasts at this establishment until one day when I was in a hurry to be somewhere at a certain time, I arrived early in the morning with the idea of having a freshly made omelet and after standing at the omelet station for a while with no luck, and asking who I thought was the manager for help locating the omelet cook, received a lukewarm answer. I gave up and went to get some scrambled eggs and bacon instead and found the eggs to be cold and the bacon to be soggy and not crunchy. And to top it off my server dumped the remaining amount of coffee of a coffee pot in a cup and brought this lukewarm coffee over to me. I was so disappointed that at the end of the day when I got home and had some time, I visited the feedback website listed on their receipt slip, and truthfully gave an account of what had happened and how disappointed I was. So much so, that I stopped going. For months I didn't return. Then today, in the middle of the Holiday Season, I decided to return, and once again try it out to see if some change had taken place. And what I saw was amazing. They had a new manager, dressed in uniform with a name tag on, walking around the front area of the restaurant, and making herself available for customers. I greeted her and ask for the omelet cook because I wanted to have an omelet made. She told me he was at the desert station helping them out and would come as soon as he notices that he was needed. I walk that way and as soon as he saw I needed him to make me an omelet, he immediately came my way and started preparing my omelet. It came out so perfect, that as he was walking away, I called him back and told him I had a holiday bonus I wanted to give him for his excellent service throughout the year. At that moment, you could tell by his watery eyes that he appreciated the gesture enmensely. And that he clearly understood the meaning of constructive criticism through example, and was graceful for it. Afterwards, I went to get some bacon to have with my omelet; and it was once again, crispy and hot, like bacon is supposed to be. This restaurant is on track again and has retained me as one of their best customers.

No getting, smile, etc. when I went asking about the order 10 minutes after paying, I was given a strange look and said it's coming. The place wasn't busy by any means. I still have no idea why it took so long for us to get the order. I've been to many cool outs and this was the worst service. I was hoping it would be nice since this is the first time I've seen indoor dining. No thanks. Parking for disabled is caddy corner to the drive thru so be careful.

Today I finally had an opportunity to do so, and so early in the morning I drove up to the restaurant for breakfast. When I arrived, a friendly lady greated me at the Host's station and had me seat at the table of my choice. To eat, I ordered the Meat Lover's Triple Meat Omelet, with homefries and white toast. My server put in the order, and yet it took a bit long to arrive. Other customers who arrived after me received their orders before mine arrived. When my order finally arrived. It looked good. They put cooked peppers and onions on top of my homefries just as I requested. The american cheese melted inside with the bacon, country sausage & ham, however the amount of meat was little compared to other places where I've had breakfast before and the price was almost double. The ambiance of the place was relaxing, and the breakfast tasted good, but just good, not great, so I wouldn't mind having breakfast here again, but I wouldn't call it a favorite place to have breakfast.

We stopped here when dropping off our daughter at VT and while it was packed, we didn't wait that long using the suggested wait time on the app after we added our name. We were seated quickly when we received the text that our table was ready. Our server Autumn was wonderful! Very attentive and so pleasant, made sure to check on us through out our meal. Our food came out quickly and tasted great! We ordered rattlesnake bites, salmon, shrimp, and a ton of sides. Yes we went to a steakhouse and didn't get steak :D The manager stopped by to check on us as well, he greeted us and made sure everything was ok, and YUP! it was!
