I love Macado's, it is a chain but a good southern one. My boyfriend and I came in on 9/22 around 2pm after hiking Mcafees knob. The hostess was not very kind, and sat us at a booth without saying 2 words to us. We waited about 10 minutes and no one ever came over to greet us. One woman came over and asked if we had been greeted and she said she find someone. Ann H quickly ran over and profusely apologized (we do not blame her at all as I believe it was a lack of communication from hostess to server, as I have worked in the industry and the disconnect is a real struggle, I assume they cut the server staff since it was close to change of shift).Schooners are always a great choice and get a sandwich for sure, you cant go wrong! We have frequented this restaurant for many years . It is owned locally by Richard Macher. The food is always exquisitely prepared to the correct temperature, taste, texture. The presentation is excellent and the wait staff is very cool. In addition to a giant menu of sandwiches and entrees and appetizers , they have a huge list of beers, liquors, and mixed drinks. The atmosphere is very casual and fun and respectful. Everyone feels welcome at Macados! I do not work for this company nor am I invested in it but I have to say this is one of the very best places in Salem , Virginia . Typically we LOVE Macado's. However, I was disappointed in the quality of my food this time. I ordered the Cashew Chicken Salad because it's a favorite and I needed some "roughage" instead of a load of carbohydrates. Usually one of the best things on the menu, imho. But this time the chicken was way over cooked and the veggies were somewhat wilted. It made for a sad meal when I was so looking forward to a delicious salad. Went in tonight, only patio seating due to covid. There were only TWO tables of four people each. Had the 18 year old blonde server. Easily worst service i've ever had in salem. An hour for 2 drinks and a buffalo wrap with no buffalo sauce on it. They were out of bombs we wanted so i said we will just take checks, she threw straws on the table and slammed our receipts when she came back. When I lived here years ago we came here a lot, I figured I would come back and try it again. I remember the service being very slow years ago, and it still is. Food is decent but pretty average for the price. It wasn't busy at all but still only saw our waitress about 3 times. Overall wouldn't recommend. This place is so ridiculously terrible I don't know how it stays open. Every time I've gone I've had a different server, I don't even see the same people leading me to believe that they treat their employees terribly and they don't work for more than a week. The only thing that I can think that keep them in business is the fact that they're right next to the college. I've eaten here several times because it was late and they were the only place open and not once have I been satisfied after leaving. Food was good. Service is terrible and the employees and management, very obviously could care less, so don't bother bringing this to their attention. Also, people are allowed to stand around on top of each other...Covid? I've been several times lately and had similar experiences, so it's not a one time thing. I'm a local and USED to eat here frequently. Macados in Salem needs to get it together. It will definitely be a while before I come back. Also, they need to be sure that the person answering the phone has an ounce of customer service in them. The restaurant is wonderful for people who love to have a variety of sandwiches. Although Macado's offers burgers, salads, etc. sandwiches are their specialty. Most of the different locations have local memorabilia (the Salem, VA location has Roanoke College memorabilia) and the majority of the staff are friendly & helpful. Honestly doesn't even get a rating. We went today and yes we understood they were busy. Our server was very inattentive he said our food would be out shortly we were already sitting there for an hour. Our apps came out cold. He then proceed to go get my friends order which were wings and fries now when he got them everything was cold like it had been sitting for a while. Then 10 mins after he gets his food the rest of our tables food came and my friend had asked to speak with manager he start to explain the situation. The server then proceeds to tell my friend well then don't come to macados. Well needless to say the manager paid for everyone's food and gave us to go boxes. We stopped in Salem to eat at Macado's while on a long road trip. We were greeted promptly by a friendly waitress (Sandra) who knew the menu well. She advised us to wait a few minutes until after 4pm to get the half price Hindenburg - one of our party of three wants to eat the whole thing even though it is ostensibly for four! We told Sandra that we were hesitant coming here because of the two bad recent reviews - but in the end the overall good reviews prevailed. She apologized for the bad reviews, was glad we came anyhow and said that she would pass that along to the manager - the infamous Amber from the earlier review. Sandra said she has worked here 5 years and loves the restaurant, menu, food and customers. Our appetizer - the pretzels - came out promptly, were hot and delicious! Just after we finished our appetizers Amber stopped by. She was very nice and glad we chose to come to Macado's. All she would say about the incident referred to by the previous reviewer was that they made a decision not to serve more alcohol based on the bar tenders observation of behavior. I find that bar tenders usually get that right. In addition to the Hindenburg, we ordered the Chicken Fajita's and the Titanic. They were all fantastic! The only thing unexpected was that the Fajita's were not prepared the way I think of Fajita's - meat, onions, peppers served on a sizzling skillet with tortilla or other flat bread served on the side to put the sizzling mixture of goodness on. Their version is basically a pizza. My wife pointed out that it was listed under the category Flatbread Fajita's and flatbread these days is shorthand for a small pizza. Fair enough - my fault. Although it was unexpected, it was excellent - I would order it on purpose again! We ordered the Cinnamon Sensation (cinnamon roll with icing and ice cream) and the Macawich (a cookie based ice cream sandwich) for dessert. Huge portions. My wife commented that the cinnamon roll was the first she has had in a while that has strong and good of a cinnamon flavor as this one. At under $50 for three people it was a great value. The bottom line is that the staff did a great job and the food was fantastic. We would definitely come back to this and other Macado's. It also teaches us a lesson about relying only on the most recent reviews. We did the right thing basing our decision on the totality of reviews and will do so again. read more

We were told there was only a 15-20 minute wait. An hour and 20 minutes later, we assumed this must mean the food is AMAZING. Boy were we wrong. I got the (slightly racist) "Oriental Shrimp Salad," which was described as a salad with shrimp teriyaki, almonds, noodles, lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers. Their version of "shrimp teriyaki" was fried shrimp with cheap ginger sesame dressing to pour over. And by "noodles" they meant those tiny crunchy fried noodles (possibly from a can) and not actual noodles. It was mediocre at best. My boyfriend got the pretzel hot dog with everything on it. Little did he know it was essentially just a pig in a blanket with a tiny cup of chili and a tiny cup of cole slaw to dip it in. And the chips it came with were just Ruffles in a bag. Completely overpriced. My mother got the reuben, which was so disgusting she couldn't finish it. She gave the rest to my boyfriend, and while he was eating it he noticed a BEATLE in his fries. This, on top of the hardly edible sandwich, caused him to bolt outside and throw up. We had to constantly REMIND our waiter for refills. The ceiling was leaking and constantly dripping on my back and head. And when I asked how long it would take if I ordered some macaroni and cheese (after hardly being satisfied with that pathetic salad) I was told I might have to wait because the kitchen was really backed up. I'm just a huge fan of Macado's and have been since I was in high school. Macado's Monday became ritualistic due to the 1/2 price Hindenburg (Hindy) sandwiches. Grab one or two friends and split all 18 inches of meat, cheese, and toppings with all the chips and pickles your heart could ever desire. Happy hour on Monday also includes 3.95 pitchers which is great. Wednesday night is Mexican night, which makes any Mexican item on the menu 5 bucks no matter what it is. Nachos, quesadillas, and anything else you find that sounds remotely Mexican is just five bucks. I recommend the Diablo Quesadillas. There are enough sandwiches on the menu for a small army and you'll love the atmosphere. There are music relics everywhere and an ample amount of TV's to make sure conversation never gets boring. I'm a big fan of sitting on the patio on nice summer days and soaking it all in. read more

I have been here before and had a better experience. Short wait for a table of 7 and we sat next to the fireplace, so that was cozy. We waited FOREVERRRRR. We had all read the SUPER long menu and made dinner choices before she came to order drinks. Waited for the drinks which came in a reasonable amount of time. We forgot to o it in an app order, placed jt about 10 min after food order and it came out super fast! We waited over an hour for our food. My kids were falling asleep at the table, and getting miserable! When the food did finally come out (910pm), we got there ~730-745, it was cold. My toasted sandwich and tater tots were ice cold, like they just left them sitting out for awhile. Flavors were good. Waitress was pleasant but kept saying "your food is coming up right now", but then it didn't come. My 6yo even said "why does she keep saying your food will be out in 1 minute and then doesn't bring it", while he is in tears. Traveling through and tried Macado's based on a recommendation from the hotel. It was a WINNER!! Service was spectacular. I got the Babe Ruth sandwich and my husband got a burger. Came fast and came hot and was delicious. The absolute only complaint was that it took a while to get the chili we ordered with the meal and it wasn't even warm when we got it. I think it would have been tasty if it had been warm but can't get excited about cold chili no matter how good. Will never come again. First off was told there was no wait until the same girl came back and told us it would be a 25 minute wait when we saw many clean tables, along with many dirty. Came in tonight with family to look for a decent meal. With Covid-19 going around there was outside seating. The employees had on a mask and gloves in which I thought would help with safety precautions but I observed each employee I would see and one employee that stuck out the most was a woman with brown hair who didn't wear gloves but had a mask on only wearing it underneath her chin, chatting with customers and bringing them food. Another employee was a male with a beard who had gloves on but I watched him pick up something out of the floor then come by our table and take drink to refill it and came back holding the top of the drink where you would drink out of it? Aren't you supposed to switch out gloves so there isn't any cross contamination? Also the food we got was cold. We complained about the appetizer which was Spinach and Artichoke dip. The dip was cold so we asked for a hot one. I thought when you gave food back it was health code to throw that food out and bring out a new one. Apparently not at this place because all they did was put it in the microwave and bring it back out. If this place is going to follow health code nor safety precautions for COVID-19 then they do not need to open. read more

No one at the hostess stand when we arrived, had to wait five minutes, she didn't greet us or anything, just brought us to our table. Our waiter had apparently already "checked out" for the night. He spoke very quickly, brought one dinner out, brought the appetizer ten minutes later with the second dinner. Didn't ask when we wanted the appetizer, I just assumed it would be brought out first since I said "we will have...", won't make that mistake again! I was also not given napkins or silverware. I can NOT believe I am seeing some of these reviews over here in the right column. One done today - wow, most of these people can't even spell - one who just graduated college? How'd that happen?? One guy who could barely put a sentence together didn't like that Macado's didn't make fried mushrooms. Somehow, using some sort of logic, I suppose, that means this place is bad. Wow. Another genius noticed the wait staff quite frequently was different. Take a big fat guess why? They hire college youngsters, (Roanoke college is NEXT DOOR!) and college people move on. We have met many of the student servers. All of them, very polite, well trained and hard working. Listen, we're from Los Angeles. The restaurants in Salem pretty much suck, is what we've found. When we moved here, we had to wait two weeks for our things to arrive, so we came here a bunch. We love sports, salads, sandwiches, and burgers. The Dodgers were in the series and so we watched most every game in Macado's. (I do not know why they spell it like that, but who cares). Let me say a couple of things. I know everyone in this place after a year and a half. I have never ever met a soul in here who was not polite, helpful, diligent and just flat out friendly - not a manager, not a bartender, not a server. We have never had anything but excellent service, ever, not even close, not once. We have known two different managers, and the current one, Ryan, even before he was manager would come to our table and make sure our food was served correctly and tasted good. He was one of the cooks. He would go back in the kitchen and cook our burgers himself, and then come back out to ask how they came out. Now, as manager, he still does! Without question, the best burgers in town, hands down. Fantastic. Also, the cobb salad is excellent; and sandwiches here are really good as well.
