Monday through Friday, I get off the freeway on Van Ness. Monday through Friday, I pass by Mabel's Kitchen, and everyday I think, "I want to eat there." Well, yesterday was the day! :) I finally pulled up their menu and noticed you could order online! Woo hoo! I placed my order for take-out, but, I was sad to see the order would not be ready until 11:30 (3 hours later...) If I'm going to be honest, I've eyed this menu about 10 times. I've tried to go a few times, but, timing or cost was always a deterrent. ($8 for a breakfast sandwich sounds steep) But yesterday, I wasn't going to allow the online ordering system to become an obstacle, so I called in... I placed an order for the Susan's breakfast panini. I ordered my sandwich with swiss cheese and bacon and ham. They also have cheddar and pepper jack as cheese options and a butt ton of different bread options. I just stuck with French. So, the sandwich. It was larger than I expected. The ham is like the good thick ham, not thinly sliced lunch meat ham. The bread is sturdy and soaks up all of the yumminess. But the true star, goes to the egg. It is a soft egg, that taste like the same consistency as an eggs benedict egg. It was so damn scrumptious. ANNNDDD...although I still think $8 is a bit steep for a breakfast sandwich, it did fill me up until dinner...and that rarely happens. read more

Great place! Awesome workers. Welcoming and talkative. It would be a nice place to hang out or do class work. Calm. I asked what was most popular and was told the Cuban sandwich, macaroni salad and junk bar. Got to make a choice of bread and chose jalapeño. Also a choice of cheese. Chose pepper jack . The Cuban sandwich was extremely delicious. The meat was tender and the whole combination with the pepper jack and bread made it really good! I can see why its a favorite! The macaroni salad was creamy and scrumptious! The junk bar was amazing! The combination with the nuts, pretzels and caramel made it salty sweet goodness! Times have obviously changed. Buying orders here is done through an ipad. It makes it really easy. Looks like registers are out. I believe it was the owner I chatted with and she was very nice and even provided a cinnamon roll treat! Also some more added yumminess! Highly recommended. This is just a terrific downtown Fresno lunch spot. You can also come in for a breakfast or morning treat, now, since Mabel's is open early. Mabel's sandwiches, whether you order hot or cold, are made on the best breads ever. I love the cold chicken salad on French bread or the veggie on pickle bread. She will gladly make your sandwich to order so feel free to ask. Salads and sweet treats are also available. This is Mabel's third location in downtown and this time she has landed on the ground floor of Bit Wise, the tech hub of Fresno. Lots of tech folk flock here for good eats and great place to do their work. Although busy at lunch, there is an easy-going vibe to the space. Seating is limited. I really like Mabel's. I think their sandwiches are good, their salads are always fresh, and crisp and their tasty treats are just that...tasty. My primary issue (and reason for 3 stars) is that it is pretty darn expensive, considering. I purchased a side salad and a brownie and paid a few cents under $10! I'm sorry, but that is down right insane. I often work out of the Bitwise building so Mabel's is just too convenient to pass up. Fortunately its also well worth a visit by itself! They have some great delicacies here, and daily specials like chicken pot pie on Mondays, bierocks on Tuesdays and Franklin Dogs on Fridays. They post the day's special on Instagram if you want a peek before you head over. They also do a ton of panini-style sandwiches. My personal favourite is the grilled vegetable sandwich which has a nice range for grilled peppers, onion, artichokes, roasted tomatoes, and mushrooms along with some pesto. They have a few different kinds of breads but I've only tried the regular roll. Salad-wise, they have a few options but I've only tried the side salad, which you can get with a delicious garlic vinaigrette which is a little bit sweet. I also love their macaroni salad - it's definitely the eggiest one I've tried, but in a good way. That sounds odd, but I swear it makes it richer and tastier. My only gripe is that it's a little over-the-odds for a sandwich, I'm rarely out of here for much under $10. It's good food, and it's a small operation, but I find $8.45 for a sandwich on the steep side. The final bonus of Mabel's is that it's right next door to Valparaiso so you can grab a tea or coffee on your way in or out too. Fabulous. read more

Mabel's was bookmarked by my GF while in Fresno. After catching the AM March Madness games on TV, I decided to finally get out of the hotel room and find this place. I was craving a decently simple lunch today; nothing crazy and I figured a sandwich would be sufficient. At the time I was using the yelp app, the address was showing up correctly but on the map it was pinned somewhere else. After some more walking, I finally found the place (which ended up being a lot close to the Doubletree we were staying at than I thought). Mabel's is within the Bitwise Stadium building on Van Ness. It's a simple shared spot that splits the area with a coffee place. The options are sandwiches and baked goods. I also got something for my girlfriend while I was here. I ordered the Cuban. I love a good Cuban and if a restaurant serves it, I'm interested. It was made to order and grilled on a panini. It did take a while, I'd say about 10 minutes after ordering, to finish, I would say it was good for the wait. The quality of the meats weren't impressive (it's probably Costco or some other form of packaged deli meats and cheese), but put altogether, it was a solid sandwich. I wish they were more liberal with the mustard but I devoured my sandwich. I ordered the GF The Veggie, sans the pesto (they use a Costco brand, which has cheese blended in). I also asked them to not use butter when making this sandwich (I observed that when cooking the Cuban they buttered the bread). They obliged and used olive oil instead. I brought the sandwich back to the hotel and the GF was very pleased with it. To her, the roasted red peppers stood out the most. Now I can't help but think that most of the ingredients is from Costco but hey, these guys put it together and it was good. It pains me to give this place only two stars because Mabel seems like a nice lady and I was generally satisfied the two or three previous times I've grabbed lunch here. Let's be clear -- I've only ordered their mixed green salad. I've heard that the Cuban and Muffeletta are good but I'm on a salad kick and the mixed green salad does the trick for me -- even at nearly $11. Undecided if I'll ever come back after today. Today I ordered the usual mixed green salad with turkey. This was on my lunch break -- I work about a mile and a half away. Parking here can be tricky, FYI -- especially if parallel parking isn't your thing. And it's not my thing, so there's that. The salad comes with feta, dressing, your typical generic spring mix that you can get from Walmart, dried cranberries and a grilled cheese. And of course the turkey that I mentioned earlier. I got my salad and took it back to work for joyful consumption... or so I thought. Opened the brown paper bag only to discover that my turkey was missing. Dammit. Called Mabel's and spoke to Mabel herself. She was apologetic and told me to come on back -- they'd have another salad for me. I asked her to please make sure it was READY for me because I'm leaving work AGAIN and I just want to run in and run out. She said sure thing. So I have a friend drive me to Mabel's so that we can make it swift and avoid having to find a parking spot. I run in and a girl gives me a whole new salad. Great, thanks. I ask her if there's turkey in there and she says that there is. I check to make sure. Yup, turkey's there. Great. Time to go back to work. I get back to my desk only to discover that this time, I'm missing the almonds. Seriously? Why can't I just get a complete order? Like sure, I have the almonds from the first order, but that isn't quite the point, is it? Don't you think that you'd double check to make sure nothing else was missing, since a customer just had to come back for a missing item? Not just that, but the spring mix was GROSS. This place has one of the best tuna melt's I have ever had, the bread is superb, and the panino press grills the sandwich so well that every inch of the inner sandwich is sizzling hot. I have eaten here several times. The paninis are awesome. My favorite is the portobello mushroom on pickled pepper sweet bread. It is to die for. A full size is actually two normal size sandwiches. So, I was craving a Cuban sandwich. I did a search on Yelp and the only place I could find with anything near it on the menu was Mabel's. They have a cuban panini that sounded pretty good and several really good reviews so I decided to give it a try. My friend and I both ordered the cuban and we got the sides of macaroni salad and the broccoli slaw. The sandwich was disappointing. It didn't deserve the name "Cuban", it was more like a hot ham and cheese. For a ham and cheese it was good, but no taste of roast pork, and upon inspection, we only found a few little strings of pork. The macaroni salad was decent, I liked that it had egg in it, and enough pickle to taste. The broccoli slaw...for us, inedible. It was dry, bitter and grainy. I probably would not go back. It was quite pricey for what we received and we were disappointed. read more

Mabel's Kitchen is a small breakfast/lunch counter that's co-located with Valparaiso Coffee Roasters inside Bitwise South Stadium. I've only really tried their breakfast sandwiches (as well as their bierocks), and have never had lunch here. Their "Susan's Breakfast" sandwich on pickled pepper french bread is pretty amazing: the soft-boiled egg yolks spread inside the sandwich and then are cooked into the bread when it's put in the panini press. Combined with the fresh cracked pepper and bacon, this sandwich is really, really good (I never get it with cheese since I'm allergic, and it's still really good). The menu says that these paninis take 20 minutes, but ask first, as it's often less. The bierocks are just ok: I've had better, but they are still a tasty treat. The seating area is the same as Valparaiso Coffee, which can get crowed at lunchtime. The biggest downside to this place is it's not open on Saturday (Valparaiso is). read more

I stopped in for a quick lunch while I was downtown and as soon as I stepped in the door the smell of fresh baked bread made my mouth water! Right away I was greeted by the friendly staff and the smiles didn't stop. The desserts look totally scrumptious and they even have beer rocks. What's not to like? The decor is great with plenty of setting inside and outside. The Cuban panini was hot fresh and delicious. The meat was lean and flavorful with yummy gooey Swiss cheese as an added complement.
