This is a "no soak" salon which is hard to find. Excessive soaking is terrible for nails, and bloats the skin. Other salons do this and then cut the bloated skin, this just leads to skin peeling or worse. At Maalou the feet are treated and moisturized and then wrapped in hot towels. No excess skin cutting. Called at 12pm on a Wednesday and was greeted with excitement from the person on the other line! I ended up getting a gel manicure and pedicure a few hours later. This spot is so cute, clean, and welcoming. I walked in and once again was greeted with so much cheer. Aside from that, they had SO many colors to choose from (though I'm more of a simple gal). The pedicure and manicure were completely dry which I love. I haven't had a good dry manicure since living in New York so I think I've found my new go to spot! Awesome! I was looking for a new nail spot after the pandemic and I found one. Maalou is very bright and airy, and very clean. They do a waterless manicure/pedicure and that means there's no soaking involved. Some people like these due to cleanliness, or being eco friendly, or not expanding their nails so that the manicure lasts longer. For me, just generally since I'm risk adverse, one less thing to worry about the cleanliness of during the 'vid. And that doesn't mean the whole experience is not as relaxing. They definitely do a great job exfoliating, and wrapping with hot towels. Anyway the whole experience is great, and I def recommend them. Hubby and I stopped by for mani and pedi at this stylish nail salon in Culver City area, their nail services are waterless which means they don't use water at all. Because they don't use water so it's not good for removing extra and dead skins on hands and feet, I felt no difference after the mani and pedi services. Their gel nail color selections were huge, I chose some bright colors as usual, my nail technician was very patient and detailed, it just without water it's hard to do it thoroughly no matter what. Also the gel didn't last long, I think it was less than a week for hand and less than two weeks for feet, the prices weren't the cheapest either but they were not too bad. Anyways we wouldn't go all the way out here again but if you are in the neighborhood it doesn't hurt to give it a try though. read more

This was a tough review. It's a beautiful space inside-bright, airy, pastel neutrals. I walked in and it was unclear who would help me. They were able to fit me in with just a bit a of a wait, so I popped out and back in. When I came back, I was told to take pick a polish (they offer some classics and non toxics, with a disclaimer these will chip sooner) and a seat, but unclear where. I ended up sitting at the long table only to realize half way through I could have taken one of the full chairs. Knowing that would have been great, as I recently had surgery, so my back was burning and in pain most of the time. I went with a basic mani. My manicurist was absolutely lovely and did a wonderful job. They are a waterless salon but that did not impede on the work. They also did not explain (as others have noted in other reviews that they did) about being waterless, etc, but I had done my research. When I checked out I noticed Apple Pay-wonderful, I don't have to reach into my bag, pull my card, and risk chipping my nail. I mentioned that was great to the girl helping me. Except the girl (not my manicurist) couldn't figure out the Apple Pay, didn't seem to care nor want to help...so I had to reach in and of course chipped my nail. I had to ask to have it fixed...and was still waiting, after 15 minutes for a fix. I finally had to ask again and one of the girls came. Come on. I understand if I left the salon, but I didn't, and it happened when I was asking to use a payment type that wouldn't chip my nails working that the salon offers. Outside of two of the girls here (my lovely manicurist being one) they need to seriously work on customer service. The owner was also here earlier and looked like she was working on a design..but no hello to anyone walking in or anything. Customer service is a big star factor for me in reviews... I'll update the stars if my mani lasts through the weekend...that will be the deciding factor if I try this place again. read more

I came in for a gel removal/gel mani and I left with no gel mani and a bleeding nail. I came with my best friend because we thought the salon looked super cute and clean. She got a nail lady (thin and had curly hair) that was very detail oriented and good at her job, but the lady that I got (bigger woman with black hair and glasses) gave me the worst manicure experience I've ever had. She was doing fine with removing my gel mani but when she started pushing back my cuticles she was so rough that the cuticle on my thumb was bleeding. She didn't apologize at all and just told me 'wow you have sensitive cuticles'. She pushed my cuticles back over my skin and started to almost scrape it away? I've gotten many manicures before and I've never seen anyone do this or be so rough. At this point I didn't even want a gel manicure anymore because I couldn't trust this woman to do anything else. I wasn't going to write a review because it could've been a bad day for her (and I honestly never had service that's so bad I felt the need to write a review) but I'm still bleeding a day later and I'm just pissed at this point. I paid $27 for this and never even received an apology because my cuticles were 'so sensitive'. My best friend had a good experience so it's not the salon it's just this woman with the dark hair and glasses. I'm unfortunate to have to give this place a bad review. I loved the place, and when I went there, everyone was super friendly!! When I came home, I saw that for some nails, the polish started very far out, and on top of that, it had already started to peel off! Just one hour later! I contacted them on FB messenger via a private message. I never received any response. The next day I called the salon and explained that I was not happy. The owner started yelling at me if I call again, she will call the police, and I've been rude to her employees the second time already, and I should never call her salon again! I loved the atmosphere, and I loved her employee as we even exchanged numbers. I just moved and was looking for a nail salon close by where I can go regularly. Unfortunately, it will not be this salon. I loved everything except how the owner treated her unhappy customers. I was hoping to have a normal conversation with her and to get this sort out, as mistakes can happen. I think she mixed up the customers, but to be honest, that's not my fault, and I would have explained her, but she never gave me the possibilities as she hung up after yelling at me. I really wanted to like this place, but unfortunately I don't think I can ever come back here. The space was very nicely decorated and clean, and the lady at the front desk was very friendly. That having been said, when I did get my pedicure, it was very painful - the woman doing my nails just dug into the edges of my nails with her tools - I finally said something when she sprayed alcohol on them (I believe I said something like "ouch!" Or please stop!). She apologized and said she sprayed the alcohol because my skin was getting red (irritated), which makes not a bit of sense to me, to put alcohol on irritated skin, but anyway, I've attached photos of what my toes looked like afterwards - there are literally scabs under my toes where my skin was rubbed raw. I feel lucky none of these got infected, (knock on wood) which would not only be a nuisance but also expensive to treat. These are my nails 3 hours after the service. They got all peeled off and I went back the next day to get a refund and the very rude owner, Mia, refused to get me a refund referring to a policy that was written no where but maybe in her head. She offered another service but how can I know that it'd stay on?! She kept trying to shut me off saying that she doesn't have time to argue and I am also very busy. EDIT AFTER OWNER'S COMMENT I did do the dishes like any normal person, 3+ hours after the service, 2 mugs and 2 tea spoons. Should it be that fragile? Then maybe you need to write that somewhere as that's a very unique feature to your salon. Come on, this is certainly not the first time I've done nails but the first time this ever happened to me. I really wanted to love this place. Upon first look the decor is modern and clean, and I appreciate that there are obvious sterilizers. I like that everything is sanitary and you can see the tools come out of a new bag. Also weird side note they play good music (R&B my fave). I got a chrome gel mani which I am pretty happy with. It took awhile and cost $60 ($40 for gel $20 for chrome finish). I didn't get her name but she was very patient and when I saw some of the chrome wasn't on the edge of my nails she redid them no questions asked. While I was getting my mani I got a pedi from a guy and got French tip. I was too into my mani to really notice what was happening but was disappointed to see a lot of uneven edges when I looked at my toes (see pic). At that point my toe nails were dry and I was hungry and just wanted to leave lol. But I was surprised he didn't ask me if the tips were ok since that's what normally happens at nail places. He asked once for the size but that's it. Pedi was $38 Honestly if I left 100% satisfied with my nails I'd make this my go to since cleanliness is super important to me and worth the money. Can't be catching fungal infections from nail places! I think I'd have to think about it just because it was expensive for what I got (at least the pedicure). I would recommend this place for gel and simple polishes, but not things like French tip. read more

I received a gift card for Maalou for my (November 4th) 71st birthday. I went in not knowing about "no soaking" dry mani-pedi. Keyla got started by removing my old gel pedicure and quickly started my manicure. Gisou started my pedicure as soon as she was finished with another client. The conversation was fantastic with both of them. The salon is very clean and natural. My cuticles are very dry, and calluses on feet, I asked for the extra calluse remover. Gisou told me they were not bad and suggested it would be better NOT to use the chemical remover. I am a very happy birthday girl! read more

Gisou is incredible! Best manicure I've ever had. She was super attentive to detail and shaped my nails impeccably. She also offered to redo the polish when tiny dust particles showed up and when I accidentally ruined the second coat on one nail by brushing against my hair. Maybe the prep process took too long? The actual painting didn't start for an hour. There was a lump of polish on one of my nail tips so she tried to remove it but mostly ended up putting more layers on; that nail is now more opaque than the others so it's not as even as I would have liked. My person clipped my skin with the nail cutter and Nipped another finger and stung it with alcohol. I have a small cut now but nothing horrible. Would be good to get a larger gel selection. Went here for the first time and the place is beautiful and has a calming relaxing vibe. I loved that they didn't have those giant foot bath chairs (they seem gross to me- don't seem clean).
