Such a cute restaurant ... the menu is written on a chalkboard and the service is friendly and fast. It's a small place with probably less than 10 tables so you are cozy in there. The food is wonderful asian fusion. Got the singaporean classic - hainan chicken which was absolutely wonderful. The chicken was perfectly cooked ... tender and moist. The accompanied sauce was sweet and salty and spicy and worked perfectly together. Can't wait to come back and tried the fried chicken wings and ramen. YUM! read more

First M restaurant I tried out of the M series! M Kokko is a hole in the wall spot that serves fusion Korean & Japanese chicken dishes and are pretty well known for their ramen so that's what I ordered. Ramen ($16) - Paitan chicken broth with mushroom, pork chashu, garlic oil, bamboo shoots and soft boiled egg! So flavorful and I love the texture of the egg, however, the pork was kind of bland. The staff were so accomodating - we arrived at 1:59 PM and they close at 2 PM BUT they were still willing to seat us! read more

I went there yesterday. Restaurant was full...we are on waitlisted for about 1 hour. You just put all your name, phone number and how many people in your group in that little tablet. They not give you approximate time of waiting as they said in the paper hanging on the wall. So we are listed on number 10....so we walk to the tap room nearby...enjoying some beer while waiting...not that long tho'...the text message beeping, we were on number 2 on the list. So we start walking back...just 5 minutes walk, maybe less... The things I hate is only, this restaurant is way to small for a popular ramen place like them. Next, not take us to long to order, since they only have few menus to choose. The reason I gave them 3 stars because our waiter, a white guy with glasses and long hair, not even care to asked his name, is not so friendly and make me afraid to ask more....he scared me already . So I just quickly order, without question anything . Next my porkbelly bun, is not look like porkbelly but shredded pork...and for me is underseasoned. And my spicy wing also underseasoned, though it's tender and juicy but need more seasoning. So those 3 things that get them 3 stars from me... Ramen is great. Noodle texture was super. The Thai Curry rice also great. Coconut sorbet is so refreshing. I need to try their Hainan Chicken Rice next time. They are sold out of this menu this time. Waiter and waitress need to be more friendly...I know you are busy but still friendliness add something to people's dining experience. That's make me drop 1 star! read more

***FOOD: everything has a zip. Limited menu. Everything on their menu is good. Wanted to try it all. VEGAN CURRY - very very good, hot spicy with udon noodles tofu and various vegetables BIANG BIANG NOODLES - not exactly like the ones in China or Taiwan, but it was good, I wish I had added some sort of protein would've been better didn't realize it didn't come with any protein, be careful because it is spicy hot; PORK BUN BAO - delicious, soft pillow buns enveloping one thick slice pork belly with some greens ***COST (OUT OF 4$) $$ very reasonable almost cheap. Pretty much everything is under $20 ***DÉCOR: super small place, bare minimum, minimalistic to extreme. it may have 20 to 25 seats, really looks like they converted the small lobby of the building into a restaurant. Nevertheless, very cool. ***SERVICE: service was good food came out quick and hot. water glasses filled regularly; Limited parking and I would imagine since it beside the theater parking maybe an an issue if there is an event or movie going on at the theater, cool that it's on the backside of the building ***RECOMMEND: yes would RECOMMEND & would definitely come back if in the area read more

Very tiny little spot. Down the cobble stone alley and around the back of the building. Best only for dates/duos, or four people at most. There were maybe five or six two-tops and two four-tops inside and maybe two four-tops outside. It's tight, and I would not call it child friendly. We lucked into an open table upon arrival, but otherwise you can check into the iPad to join the waitlist. There were two servers who kind of tag teamed all the tables. No discernible music playing, so we could hear other tables conversations quite clearly, since it is a bit cramped in there, but big windows gave some great light. The small but delectable menu is on the wall, but the drink/dessert menu located on each table has a QR code for more convenience. We started with the steamed pork belly buns, and my husband had draft Asahi while I tried the Yuzu Collins (it was fine but I would try something else next time). The buns were decent, lacking a bit on the pickles, the sauce was uninspired, but the cut of pork belly was good size. The fried shallots added a delightful and flavorful crunch. For the main course he did the ramen, and I did the biang biang noodles, which the server up sold me on adding chicken to, but then it came without the chicken or the normally included tofu, so that was a bit disappointing (they didn't charge me though, so I let it go). They were spicy, but flavorful, albeit topped with an excess amount of cilantro. The noodle consistency was perfect. My husband's ramen was silky smooth and delicious, but pretty lacking in the chasu pork, and the egg was over cooked. He said it wasn't the best he'd ever had, but it was in the top five. For dessert, we did the coconut sorbet which was divine. Came in half a coconut shell and had fresh fruit on top. The coconut flavor was outstanding with little chunks of coconut flesh. Multiple of the items on their menu can be vegan and/or gluten free. Which makes it more inclusive. We spent $103 all things considered. A lovely date night. read more

We stopped in with a party of 5 around 7PM on a Saturday night. We were able to put our name down in the waitlist and explore nearby businesses downtown. I highly recommend getting a drink at Pour while you wait. Our wait was about 75 minutes but the food was absolutely worth it! The wait would likely be shorter with smaller parties or during weekdays. The restaurant is certainly small, with about 2 tables that can accommodate parties up to about 6 and several 2-seater tables indoors and outdoors. The interior is beautiful with the menu drawn out on a giant chalkboard with vividly accurate drawings of the food. The ramen broth was the best I have ever had. The boiled egg was perfectly done and there were huge pieces of pork to enjoy. We got spicy wings and pork buns for the table. The wings were delicious but definitely spicy so it is not for those with low spice tolerance. The pork buns came with a large piece of pork and had a unique crunch at the bottom of the bun that added a really unique and tasty texture. Service was quick, though we did have to ask for water refills several times which was especially inconvenient when our mouths were on fire from the spicy wings. read more

The crunch on this chicken sandwich is unrivaled. They also have black garlic oil with their ramen and though I have to admit I've yet to try their ramen, that tells me they know what they're doing. Everything I've had from here is top notch quality though. read more

Tucked away next to M Sushi...M Kokko is a nice spot for some Asian comfort. The ramen hit the spot to warm us up from the cold (early March), and the KFC (Korean Fried Chicken) is what it should be - extra crunchy with the right amount of soy & sweetness (sorry for talking with my mouth full in the video). The pork chashu was a a nice thick slice, and also had Singapore's national dish of Hainanese Chicken Rice. The only things I would point out were that I wasn't too fond of the black garlic oil as it gave it a bit of bitterness I wasn't expecting; the Hainanese chicken could have used more seasoning. Still, good spot overall. Vibe was nice and it was cool to see the menu drawn on the wall. Order: -Spicy Ramen: Paltan chicken broth, wood ear mushrooms, pork chashu, black garlic oil, bamboo, egg -Hainan Chicken: Poached chicken w/ginger scallion oil, aromatic rice, cucumber salad -Korean Fried Chicken (KFC): Garlic Soy sauce read more

We tried to walk in to the sister restaurant M Sushi at 8:30p on a Thursday night to find a 45 minute wait. Only a 5 minute wait at M Kokko. There are only 6 indoor tables (3 4tops, and 3 2tops) plus 3 outdoor tables (all 4tops). Most of the people who come here are taking to go. Service is very knowledgeable and efficient. We saw our waiter every 3-5 minutes and it's hard to be overlooked when there are so few tables. We ordered the pork belly buns ($9 for 2) to share for the three of us. They will not add on a 3rd bun for extra price; only comes in pairs. This was quite good and the crispy shallots are a great texture. I personally would have wanted the acidity and crunch from a pickled cucumber to cut the fat and balance the flavors, but they were still excellent. My wife and I shared the biang biang noodles ($14) which was enough food for us both. You won't find any whole mushrooms or tofu. I think they finely dice the mushrooms and tofu to simulate a beef ragu with Asian flair. The sauce is a bit tart and acidic (from the tomatoes?, I think), and it's a bit oily. The noodles and crispy shallots are incredible in texture. The flavor balance is a bit off on this dish too. But the real winner is their Ramen ($16), which can be customized to your spice level preference. We ordered non-spicy and the broth is one of the most well-balanced and complexly flavored I've had. They add a black garlic oil which contributes to this flavor profile. I highly recommend trying this dish. read more

Freshly made and so delicious! The biang biang noddles with chicken were sooo awesome. I'm pretty sure the noodles were handmade...the textures in the dish were amazing! Some fresh herbs, radish,a lime wedge, some little crunchies and a piece of boy Choy (I believe). It was great!! The wings were sweet and a little spicy and very crunchy The pork buns were good but definitely porky. Lol read more

This place is just across street from the Marriott I am staying overnight. I walked in around 7 pm and was told no seating until 9 pm. I made the reservation and went work out at the gym. The host recognized me upon my return. I was sitting by the bar, and all the seatings have plexiglass dividers. Super COVID-19 compliance. There are many high price items on the Menu. I was not hungry so just ordered Bun & Salmon Kama. The Bun was served first. The crust Salmon skin & BBQ eel made it an amazing texture when you took the first bite. The sauce was not heavy to overtake the flavor. The Salmon Kama was another delicious dish. Grilled Salmon collar (the best part of the fish to my taste) was delicious. No need to dip in the Ponzu sauce. Yummmm! Definitely will come back foe more if I come back to downtown Durham again. read more

Took a long nap, and barely got up in time to get into this popular Korean-Japanese fusion concept, Downtown Durham restaurant before closing time...for a super-late dinner! Surprisingly, there was a waiting list upon arrival...around 8:30 pm. Even had to wait nearly 30 minutes! Well, part of this has to do with the fact that this place, which is somewhat hipster, but mostly a "hole-in-the-wall", is EXTREMELY small...with only 6-8 tables. Still, they made good attempt to socially distance. In a way, I anticipate small ramen bars...and many times, I choose to endure such claustrophobic ambiance just to satisfy my cravings for first-rate ramen. For me, that's the downside to ramen bars. The upside? RIDICULOUSLY GOOD RAMEN!!! I tried their "Spicy Ramen", and it was just too good to describe. Just WOW. Possibly one of, if not THE Best, ramen I've ever had (and I've had ALOT of ramens!). The flavor was a mix of Korean hot 'n spicy plus some Coconut-flavored broth plus whatever magical ingredients?? Also, very generous cuts of juicy Pork Belly (and Eggs) as well! I also ordered Pork Belly Buns...and again, RIDICULOUSLY GOOD!! Too much Pork Belly in one meal really...but still, no regrets. So glad I was able to hit this tiny hot spot before leaving the Triangle Park area. Am hoping to relive this ultimate Ramen experience again, sometime after the pandemic. For anyone who haven't yet become fans of amped-up ramens, try this...then I'll ask again! read more

I'd love to rate 6 stars out of 5 stars!!!!! I ordered a Ramen with no spicy. It was amaaaaaazing!!!!! I would say that it is the best Ramen I've ever had. The egg, the vegetables, the soup, the meat, and the scallions, everything made the Ramen perfect. Their service speed was very fast, and they were super friendly! The environment was cozy and clean, and the menu was simple but had their own characters. However, it may be quite difficult to park right outside since there parking space here is limited and up to 2 hrs. Maybe you can go to park some garages nearby if you go there during rush hours. Good luck! I highly recommend this place to anyone who is visiting the research triangle here!!! read more

Tl;dr: A busy little hole in the wall with dishes that are bursting at the seams with flavor. One little qualm regarding dessert. Went to downtown Durham after our work/school day on Friday unsurprised to see a 4-party deep waitlist already. No biggie, we waited outside since the air was cool and the brick walkway is great people watching if they try to walk on it with heels. Our wait was about 15 minutes. Got seated near the door, but since the space was small, each table seemed equally tight so that wasn't a problem. We ordered the curry udon, ramen, and the green tea crepe cake. The curry udon was PACKED with flavor! The curry itself was perfect in its consistency and flavor. Rich in its spices but sweet to ease itself onto the palate. The carrots stewed in the curry were soft but held together nicely. The fried onions on top were a heavenly addition that gave a crisp contrast of texture with the silky curry and the soft noodles. The ramen had IMMENSE flavor in the broth. I was apprehensive ordering ramen (traditionally Japanese) at a korean-influenced restaurant but the waitress helped persuade me since I wanted something brothy. The tonkotsu broth was creamy and carried the essence of bright aromatics, while the black garlic oil helped scent every bite of noodle as it gets slurped up (and yes, you're SUPPOSED to slurp ramen noodles). The pork belly was SO tender that it fell apart as soon as I tried lifting it with my chopsticks, however the char they got on the pork belly added a solid element of smokiness to the ramen that only increased its depth of flavor. The only place where this restaurant lost a star was in the dessert. I get it, crepe cakes are delicate and time consuming so making it ahead of time and keeping it in the fridge is totally fair game and expected. However: the texture of this cake was not great. It seemed frozen at its middle, and by the time it softened up, the layers of crepe seemed to mush together. The green tea spread was delicious and sweet while still holding that deep matcha flavor without being bitter, however the actual crepes tasted bitter. Typically crepes aren't made with a substantial rising agent because they're meant to be thin, but it tasted like they added baking soda to the mix because the bitterness lingered heavily on our palates. Overall, this is a must visit "M" restaurant if you like the feeling of small hole-in-the-walls with fantastic entrees. Unless they fix the crepe cake, I'd absolutely skip it. read more

Nom nom. Been in the squad for years, but I guess not anymore due to Covid restrictions. At any rate, go see Jefferson or the others. Check hours, and try to get here early. This place is awesome, but a small but targeted menus. Start with the hot chicken wings or the pork buns, or both. They are great. The Nashville hot chicken sandwich is perfect, or the ramen. Totally worth it, and the peeps are great. Get there before 1145, though, no reservations. Parties of 4 or less are best. You won't regret it! read more

M Kokko is one of my favorite M restaurants in Durham. My boyfriend and I showed up a little past 5 PM, which is when they open, so we didn't have to wait. The restaurant was a lot smaller than we expected, but it felt was very homey and quaint. The service was great -- very quick and friendly. The menu has around 10 things on the menu, but it was so difficult to choose what to eat because everything looked delicious. We ended up ordering a three-course meal: 1) Kokkonut Curry; 2) Biang biang noodles; 3) Curry udon. The kokkonut curry is definitely the best curry we've had. It was perfectly flavorful, creamy, and delicious! 10/10 would recommend. The second dish was the biang biang noodles . They were unique and delicious -- tangy and well-seasoned. The curry udon was a little watery but it tasted fine and it definitely hit the spot, especially on a rainy day. read more

Really enjoyed our meal here! I cozy little place with a small selection of dishes on a big blackboard wall. The waiter was very friendly and we got our food in a timely manner. The Jia Jiang Mian was wonderfully thick and a hearty meal. Great spot, definitely recommend. read more

Restaurant atmosphere- 4/5 very tight space, but to be expected since it's in downtown Durham. Cute interior design where menus are hand painted portraits hung up on the wall (there are only ~8 items total on menu) Food-5/5 I got the ramen, and I was blown away. I have tried ramen from around the world, including san francisco, Tokyo/japan, Korea, and New York. While the ramen wasn't exactly "authentic", the taste was delicious and very rich, creamy broth. You can request to make it spicy, but to be honest it's not really spicy (maybe a little less spicier than sriracha?) My partner got the biang biang noodles, which were some flat hand made noodles with cumin lamb. I thought the flavors were alright, but they claimed it was the best noodles they've had in all of North Carolina. Service- 3/5 although there was only 1 server for all tables (maybe around 12?) it was still somewhat slow and felt like he was purposely avoiding eye contact while passing by us. After finishing eating, we patiently waited for over 15 mins for the check, before we finally flagged down the water to which he retorted "wait a moment I'm the only 1 working", even though it was the 1st time we requested the check. Despite all these drawbacks, still a 5/5 overall score since the food is probably one of the best in North Carolina. read more

I was surprised that on a Tuesday night (~8pm) there were 7 parties ahead of us, so I was about to go somewhere else but got the call not too long after I put my name down. I think I was just super hungry. Otherwise the biang biang noodles were just okay, not phenomenal. I think it was a little on the salty side. The noodles were kind of stuck together, so I spent some time unfurling them and re-coating each noodle in the sauce at the bottom of the bowl. I had a taste of the curry udon noodles, but my friend and I agreed that it kind of had the instant curry packet flavor to it, which isn't necessarily bad. Sadly we didn't see the rice bowl, bibimbap, or jjajangmyun on the menu, but we would've been down to try one or more of those. read more

My wife and I came on a weekday for lunch right when it opened (at 11:30am), so we had no wait. Even as we were leaving, around 12:30, there was a short wait. The space is small, so I imagine it gets filled up quickly. I ordered the Biang Biang Noodles with the "KFC" chicken wings (garlic soy glaze). I liked the texture and thickness of the Biang Biang Noodles. The noodles had the right amount of chew to them. It was spicy, too, which I appreciated. My wife isn't big on spicy things, so she wasn't a fan. The dish overall had a little more acidity to the flavor than I would have enjoyed, but it was still a decent dish. The chicken wings weren't as awesome as I thought they would be. Don't get me wrong, they still tasted good, but I was a bit disappointed by the dryness of the chicken. My wife got the Ramen, and it was delicious. It was definitely my favorite out of the 3 dishes we ordered for lunch. The broth had deep flavor, it had perfectly cooked noodles, spot-on egg, just everything came together well. The ramen is what I'd recommend, for sure. Service was friendly and quick, the space is small but clean, and thankfully we didn't have to wait because we got there early! read more

finally visited m kokko for the first time after having wanting to try it for forever! we decided to meet right when they opened for dinner around 5. the parking definitely was crazy, even for a thursday evening but it was a hidden gem. once you walk in, you're greeted with an ipad and if it's busy or you have a larger party, you'll be put on a waitlist but thankfully we got there early and we're seated immediately. since it's a relatively small place, we wanted to make sure we were able to dine in with no issue. i would recommend going early if you have a larger party size! the menu is on large plates on the wall and was so hard to choose from! our server told us his favorites which was the ramen and chicken sandwich. my date and i were interested in the biang biang noodle but a friend also told me that the chicken sandwich was super good so we decided to get one of each and share some bites for best of both worlds! we placed our orders and chatted for 5-10 minutes before our pork buns came (apologies for no photos) and they were so flavorful and juicy! the bun was warm and fluffy, the pulled pork was so tender and sauce was so delicious. before i could finish my bun, our dishes came in shortly after! the presentation was gorgeous and the portions were perfect. you can taste the chili oil in the biang biang noodles but the cucumber and radish helped cool down the heat (my spice tolerance is almost floor level). for the chicken sandwich, you were able to choose between normal, hot or super hot and he chose hot (which was a good spice level). the chicken was so juicy and full, the salad on the side was portioned well too! overall, the food was a very delicious and there were so many customers trickling in throughout the hours we spent there. the music and noise level were a bit high and we had a hard time speaking over it sometimes but definitely a cute date spot! there are a few outdoor seating, but the weathers been so hot so possibly during the cooler season would be perfect! read more

Small cozy place , good service and great food. Enjoyed the pork buns and the Ramein. They did not have some items on the menu.

Hands down my favorite restaurant in Durham. Their menu is small but you can tell a lot of thought went into each dish and everything is executed perfectly. My husband and I come here all the time and while I love everything on the menu, most of the time we just can't resist both getting the spicy ramen. I consider myself a ramen connoisseur and I'm very picky about my ramen and let me tell you, this ramen is legit. It rivals ramen found in big cities like NYC and LA. The broth is delicious, rich and creamy. The noodles are perfectly cooked. Chashu is good, not the best I've had but still very good. The egg is well marinated. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it! My other favorite is the biang biang noodles. It's good enough that even I, a meat lover who usually recoils from vegetarian/vegan dishes, can't get enough of it. Noodles have great texture and the sauce is so so delicious. Also have had the hainan chicken, pork buns, KFC wings, jjajangmen and have loved them all. Basically you can't go wrong with anything you order here. The place is small and they don't take reservations but there's an automated system for wait list. There can be a pretty significant wait during peak times but when that happens we usually just put our name down and walk across the street and get a beer from pour while we wait. The only thing that could use improvement is the drink menu. I'm not a sake fan and the beer/wine/cocktail selection is small and relatively pricey. Overall a very minor detail but it would make this place even more perfect than it is! All in all, this place is the bomb and you won't regret coming here. read more

This was my second visit to M Kokko and it did not disappoint! I had the Vegan Curry Udon, and it was sooo good! It was however super challenging to eat! I had chopsticks and a spoon, and I felt like I was working really hard to pick up the big noodles haha! I was with a friend and we both had the same dish, and both commented how challenging it was to eat...and how we would not have wanted something like that on a first date. This spot is super tiny!!! Like less than 10 tables I think. If they are full when you arrive, you put your name in on a tablet and have to wait outside, because there is absolutely no extra space inside! They text you when your table is ready, and you have 5 minutes to arrive. We waited about 5-10 minutes during lunchtime on a Thursday, and I've also had a short wait on a Friday evening at dinner time. While this is a great spot to eat...you can't really be on a time constraint to dine here. read more

3 stars because this was one of the strangest and most confusing dining experiences I've had in awhile... first we ordered the Nashville hot wings on recommendation: they were perfectly cooked and super crunchy but...someone forgot to add salt to the rub--literally zero salt and they didn't come with sauce. I really don't like sending things back unless there is something really wrong but chicken without salt is not good and they were super spicy, so no balance. They made them again and still didn't taste any salt so we asked for a salt shaker and that did the trick and they were delicious-- spicy and crispy! Next we ordered the pork bao buns and the meat was good but there was no sauce inside the the whole thing was dry and not that enjoyable. Our next order was the most confusing of all: we got the Dan Dan mian noodles and it was a fusion fail. It tasted like someone added curry powder to a bottle of ragu tomato sauce. The confusion was this: everything was almost amazing but then not at all amazing at the same time! Definitely was overpriced for what we got...maybe they were just having a bad day because I've heard good things about the food? read more

Found this spot in a moment of "omg I'm so hungry...". I had a taste for ramen and did a good ole Yelp search. It took me a while to find, and parking is nonexistent, but I'm glad I didn't give up and go somewhere else. This little quaint hole in the wall is adorable!!! I can literally only count 10 tables... but they've been turning around quickly (except mine because I'm working/studying/eating/yelping at the same time. Hahaaa So overall, I love the ambiance. The wings were great and had a wonderful flavor. The presentation of the ramen is immaculate! I enjoyed it! Did have to add some soy sauce to get it just right for me, but I like salt so that makes sense for me. If I could add anything to this bowl, it would be corn. The ginger beer mule is super ginger-y... so expect your throat to tingle and feel a bit of spice. The service was great! Very personable... just wish he would've cleared the table of dishes I was finished with. I'll definitely be back. (Probably next week!) There's also a sushi bar next door. I went there first by accident. Suuupppeeerrr sexy spot!! Great place for date night! Ok I'm done rambling. Enjoy! read more

Let me say it's nice to get out for a meal post Covid. I've wanted to get to M Kokko for quite some time and I'm glad they've survived. Seating is limited so be patient. The pork bun was very tasty, I wish it were larger. The wings, there were two options so my wife got the regular KFC wings and I got the KFC hot chicken version. Both were plenty flavorful but left me wanting more. Yes the servings are small, this isn't bw3's but they price was easily some of the most expensive wings I've had. Wife was hyping this place up for the longest. We found ourselves in downtown Durham on a freezing cold night having drinks. We get hungry and look for a place to eat. The stars aligned that night cause we had no idea this place was right around the corner. Surprised and excited and pull up a map and start walking. Did I mention how cold it was??? We get there to find a waiting line outside the door. There are 7 people ahead of us once we sign in. As I lose feeling in my toes I tell her I'm willing to wait another 10 minutes but they're amputated. 10 minutes pass, line hasn't moved, and we're walking back towards our ride when we get a text. WE'RE NEXT!!! I sprint back to the restaurant fearing we'll lose our seat. We're in. Inside we get water and check the menu on the wall. It's on a chalkboard with hand drawn pictures and description. She gets KFC wings and we both get Biang Biang noodles. I watch as she dives into the wings. Loud crunches, raised eyebrows, smiles and a look of satisfaction. These appeared to be worth the wait. Served with delicious, sweet crunchy radish, which I ate all of. Then comes the noodles. I was hesitant as there was some ingredients I've never heard of or tried including yu Choi and pickled mustard root. I've had shiitake mushrooms but never soy braised and tofu but never smoked. Everything was much better than I expected. The tofu had a pleasant chewy, almost meaty texture. Yu Choi was different but tasty. The sauce was bbq/teriyaki/a little spicy. It went well with the somewhat thick noodles, mushrooms, tofu, and veggies. And the portion was generous. We both had leftovers. As someone susceptible to heartburn this wasn't the best decision so late at night but that not a knock on the flavors. This dish was very good and well worth the wait. As a child of immigrants, my parents always stressed to me the importance of hard work. After all, it was only through perseverance, luck, and hard work that they were able to come to the United States in pursuit of the American Dream. Every day, the importance of education and hard work were drilled into me. They told me that one day I would look back after achieving great things and that the work would have been worth it. And so throughout my schooling I put forth as much effort as I could. I remember sleepless nights in high school studying while balancing all sorts of extracurriculars, hoping that one day I could attend my dream school. After years of hard work, I finally applied to colleges and was lucky enough to get into a great school (not the best, to the eternal disappointment of my parents). But did the work stop there? Of course not. I kept pushing forward in hopes that one day the work would pay off in a glorious sense of achievement upon graduating from a university. The months leading up to my graduation were incredibly nerve-wracking. All of those years of hard work were about to culminate into a singular event that I would remember for the rest of my life. When my name was finally called on that fateful day, a sense of pure joy radiated throughout my being. It was like no other feeling that I've ever had. ... that is, until I had the spicy ramen at M Kokko. I feel betrayed that my parents told me that hard work was the only way to feel the way that I did on my graduation day. Now, every time I want to feel alive, I stop by M Kokko. The ramen has the perfect blend of textures and flavor. Perfectly-cooked pork, soy-marinated eggs, and a creamy broth provide an incredibly satisfying umami flavor, coupled with some wood-ear mushrooms and bamboo shoots to balance out this well-crafted meal. I would highly recommend ordering it spicy if you can tolerate it (it's not explicitly stated on the menu that you can do this). This is by far the best ramen you can get in Durham, and is incredibly consistent (I've had it at least 10 times). When I went recently, I also got the newly-added yuzu semifreddo, which was delightful. I'm a big fan of deserts that aren't overly sweet and this was remarkably well-crafted. The ice cream is delicious, and the granola and various fruits provide a nice sense of texture. A perfect compliment to the ramen. Their other dishes are also good, but I find myself returning to the ramen again and again. When I have kids, I'll tell them that if they work hard, they'll one day be able to eat M Kokko. All that other stuff is overrated. read more

Limited menu, but everything is SO good! The Ramen is by far my favorite, the best in Durham. The house made peach tea is another winner. The only downside is the place is really small not really aesthetically pleasing, and there may be a long wait on a busy day. Service is OK. Our waitresses have been pleasant, but when the place is busy you really notice it with the service. Highly recommend if you're in Durham- a hidden gem for sure. read more
