The most unprofessional employees work here. The women that work here are extremely rude and they talk badly about their customers amongst each other while there are customers still in the store. I feel bad for the owner, that this is how their store is being represented to the public. The worst customer service I've ever seen and that is their main job working at a retail store. I'm actually relieved to see other negative reviews here about similar situations because I now know that they weren't specifically targeting me and this is just their norm-- consistently rude. What could improve... the Customer Service... it SUCKS stopped by to ask a question and the older lady at the check out could care less and truthfully was rather rude. I felt she was the owner or manager. For a small business in Glen Ellyn I was rather shocked at her lack of good customer service. On the flip side stopped at M & Em's the night of the Christmas Walk and the young lady manning the door was nice asked if I needed any help, answered my questions etc. They have great gifts for younger kids some prices are reasonable others are crazy high. I came to M & Em's after seeing on the Alex and Ani website that their products are carried here. I was a little confused by seeing the "children's clothing" description on Yelp but I decided to take a gamble. To clear it up, they are mostly a children's boutique, but they do have accessories and a few other things for adults. Their Alex and Ani collection was pretty big which surprised me. I found them to actually have more than Nordstrom in Oak Brook. I ended up buying 3 A&A wrap bracelets here. There was also a jewelry maker (Infinite Warrior) doing a trunk show and I bought one of her bracelets too. The customer service here was great.. I truly felt valued and appreciated for coming in. My A&A collection is growing and I'll be going back to M&Em's really soon. read more

I've been on Yelp for 10+ years and this is the FIRST negative review I have ever written. I am also a life-long Glen Ellyn resident whose family has spent thousands of dollars in this store over the course of many years. I should first at least give them credit for consistency. I have yet to walk into the store without the employees looking at me like I just ruined their day (the same is true when my wife walks in). If I do need to ask a question, they often look me up and down before providing a rude and condescending response. Why? I'm polite, I smile, I value other people's time. I've worked in retail stores and remember how much I appreciated the polite and patient customers. It has no meaning here. The reason I am writing this is because they hit a low beyond anything I could have imagined. I gave my daughter money to buy her mom a bracelet. She brought the bracelet to Michigan where we were going to be spending Christmas. Once there, she realized she had bought a children's size and felt badly. I was still in Illinois, so I went to the store and bought the adult version (and, yes, they were as rude as ever). After Christmas, I went back to the store to return the original bracelet. It had been 8 days. I was informed there are no returns after 7 days. I explained what happened and that I could have done an exchange after Christmas but I wanted my daughter to be able to give her mom the bracelet as a Christmas present. It didn't matter. I was told no exceptions. I politely asked if there was someone I could talk with. I was told the owner would be in tomorrow. So I came back the next day. It was a snowstorm, I waited for 3 trains to cross, and I "just missed her". I was invited to come back a third day. In the end, three days, and a couple dozen dirty looks later, they refunded the $40 for the bracelet. It is important to note that I do not hold any of the employees accountable for their behavior... because the owner does not hold them accountable either. A toxic culture exists within that store and shame on the owner for considering it acceptable. And shame on me knowing this, yet continuing to support this store for all of these years. read more

I'm not too sure if this store shares employees with M and Em's?The reason I'm mentioning this first is because I never seem to have a rude person at M & Em's. The girls there are polite and always willing to wrap your purchase, very friendly. Now...the connecting store, Meredith Jaye, is an entirely different experience. I have shopped here numerous times. EVERY, YES EVERY time I am in this store, NO ONE greets you. Fine. However, the worst part is, you reach the counter, and the woman, who I assume is the owner, because she's there every time doing the exact same thing, gossiping with the young employees about other workers or CUSTOMERS!! I I had a sweater in my hand to purchase yesterday and put it back. I will NEVER set foot in this store again. I won't even cut through if it's 10 below to get to M and Em's. How about a hello?! How about teaching your teenage employees to NOT trash talk others especially in front of customers. Lead by example rather than trying to be cool. You look and sound ridiculous. read more

Upon entering the shop today, I observed that it was busy and the majority of staff and customers were either wearing face masks improperly or not at all. Given Illinois' mask mandate issued on September 3, 2021 ("All employees and customers, regardless of vaccination status and ability to physically distance, must wear face coverings over the nose and mouth in a retail setting"), I questioned an employee as to why M & Em's was failing to comply with the Governor's mask requirements. In view of her perfunctory "sorry about that" reply, I promptly left the store. You lost a potential customer. read more

I am originally from Glen Ellyn and was in town for an engagement party. I received a marble cutting board as a gift, unfortunately on the flight home (in my carry on luggage) the handle broke off completely. I was back home again for Christmas and I decided to see if I could exchange out my cutting board because I never had the chance to use it. When I walked in and asked what they could do to help me, the lady and the front desk said she would have the owner call me. When the store manager called me the conversation was incredibly rude. I was told once it leaves the store it is not their responsibility and it was not broken when it was originally purchased. I couldn't even get the words out to say okay, I'll come pick it up. Instead I got an angry rage filled phone call telling me this was my problem not theirs. If she had been polite I would have understood their store policy and moved on. I'm disappointed in their customer service and have no interest in giving them any additional business especially after being treated the way I was. read more

Visited yesterday for a birthday gift. Store was busy with no attempt made to keep social distancing or to require all customers to wear masks. I love this little cute girly boutique in downtown Glen ellyn.After eating at my fav Honey I like to head over to M and Em's to see if I can find a cute lil something for my nieces. I do have a bit of a grudge since they refused to sell my super cute animal barrettes I make! But I think I can get over it even though my barrettes would be a grand addition to their store.Ok I'm done harboring on it. Just happened to wander in hoping to find a birthday gift for a friend's six year old girl. I left with not only a gift for the little girl, but some birthday gifts for some of my girlfriends. This shop is the cutest and the owners are so friendly. I thought it was just going to be a kids store but found they have some great items for babies, teenage gals and women. Clothing, toys, hair accessories, shoes, candles, knick knacks, jewelry--covers a lot of ground here. Some of the items are definitely over-priced ($10 for a baby hair bow?) but if you spend some time and browse, you can certainly find something unique and in your budget. I appreciated that they have non-traditional girly gifts--that not all the items are the "princess set". There are educational games and items for sporty girls or for book-lover or journal-lover girls. They offer free gift-wrapping if you need it too. I signed up for their mailing list, I don't know what that entails, but it's such a cute shop I wouldn't mind making it a regular stop for cute gifts. read more

This store has a great selection of really unique items for children of all ages. Toys, games, clothing, fashion accessories, etc. I'm always impressed by the interesting things they carry in this store that you just don't find anywhere else. However, the prices are a bit on the outrageous side. For instance, I found a couple of cute t-shirts that I wanted to buy for my friend's daughters. That is, until I looked at the price tag and saw that each t-shirt was $42. I don't even buy myself $42 t-shirts, let alone kids who won't be able to wear them after one season. If you are ever in a pinch and need to find a special gift for a special kid, this place surely has something for any kid's tastes. I always thought that M & Em was only a children's store until I had to return a gift there once.. To my surprise, they have such great women's clothes as well! The selection ranges from a small amount of denim, to yoga/loungewear, to button down work shirts, or even casual dresses. The prices are pretty comparable, but affordable. They also have a great selection of fashion jewelry and everyday wear jewelry as well as purses, duffle bags, and home decor. For kids: They have the cutest clothing, blankets, accessories, and gifts for babies, toddlers, and young children. I definitely recommend M & Em's for anyone looking for a cute children's gift. If you are in need of Alex and Ani bracelets, then look no farther. The necklaces are amazing and bracelets are too fun! I think this is one of the best stores in downtown Glen Ellyn if you have children or are looking for a great gift for a child in your life. There is a great selection of toys, clothing, and other assorted items. It is a store that by all accounts is unpretentious unlike other stores that I have visited. Horrible experience with this store. I tried to return a sweater, with the receipt, that fell apart in the wash. The sweater had no washing instructions on tags, and was polyester. I was treated so rudely by not one, but 2 sales clerks. Both accused me of not washing the sweater correctly, and literally made me feel like I was doing something criminal by returning it. They finally said the owner would have to call me. Of course she didn't. Cowardly way to run a business. Luckily our credit card company sided with us and reversed the charge. I had the following experience shopping at M and EAM's in Glen Ellyn. I bought 3 dresses clearly tagged at $47 each. After returning to the car however, I examined my receipt, realizing that the store's OWNER had charged me $55 per dress, marking out the $47 on the price tag, and writing $55 over it. I immediately returned to the store, confronting her about changing the price. She responded that it was well within her right to do so. I next told her I wanted to return the dresses for a full refund, because it was wrong to trick customers into paying more for an item than originally marked. She replied that she would only give me store credit and that there was nothing I could do about it. After several minutes of argument (including an attempt by her to escalate the dispute by treating to come over the counter and take the receipt from me), she reluctantly refunded my money. I suggest that if you ever shop there, check the price she charges you at the register. I've never heard of a merchant stealing from their own clientele. read more

As a long time Glen Ellyn resident, I have passed by this store on numerous occassions and always wanted to stop by. I finally did yesterday, with my 5 year old daughter. It was a late Friday afternoon and the store was empty. When we walked in we were not greeted by anyone. Even when I was perusing right by the register, neither of the two women working could be bothered to even say hello. While there were plenty of cute things I wanted to buy, there was no way I was going to support a business with such poor customer service. I felt like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. read more

this is a cute little boutique for kids. the stuff is pricey and considering that kids grow out of their clothes and shoes so quick, you might want to think twice about how much you want to shell out. I happened upon this store while doing some last minute Christmas shopping. I was very pleased with the children's gift selections. If I had a young girl, this would be an especially fun store. I ended up getting a purse to give as a gift, the recipient was totally pleased. I felt it was a nice item at a great price. I also treated myself to a cute top, the selection is unique, a little funky but not too far out. If you like costume jewelry, this is the place to stop in! I am headed back in for a new baby gift. I bought a pair of earrings from M & Em's to surprise my daughter that she could get her ears pierced for her 8th birthday. She hadn't even taken them off of the cardboard backing, let alone put them in her ears, before they broke. When I went to return them I was told I could only receive store credit since it was a few days past the 7 day return window. To which I said "even though they broke?". The girl went to check with her manager, came back and told me "sorry, she said no". I told her to let her manager know I was very disappointed and that this was poor customer service...she agreed with me but unfortunately there was nothing she could do. This store does not stand by their products. There are plenty of other boutiques in downtown Glen Ellyn with top notch customer service. I actually had this happen with earrings from a different boutique in Glen Ellyn and the store owner was embarrassed and overly apologetic that they broke and offered my money back or to exchange them. The seeming partners in the store are so sweet when I'm spending $500.00, but on a day I was so ill I could barely stand up, I needed a last minute birthday present. There's a lot of merchandise in the store and a wide variety items from candles to jewelry to baby/children's toys and clothing to women's fashions, greeting cards, etc. The staff is always helpful and warm and I leave the store happy with my experience and purchases. I particularly think their selection of jewelry is really great. I have found some of my favorite pieces of costume jewelry at this store. I came across this store 11 or 12 years ago recommended from a neighbor. It was LOVE at first site! I was able to clothe my newborn son in the cutest fashion as well as update the nursery! As years flew by I was able to outfit him throughout his toddler years. Oh how I miss those days for both of my boys! I still continue to shop at this boutique because not only are there things for me!!! but also great items for gifts and special occasions for everyone on my list!
