First time in Madrid and we're lucky that we found Mentrida via google maps because this place gave us our first exposure to patatas bravas and it left a memorable impression! The aioli and spicy red sauce had us asking for me that we ordered another round. We really enjoyed most of the dishes we ordered - the grilled pork ears (not really grilled, more fried) was the standout. They were so tender and delicious. I've only had them prepared chinese style so this was such a surprise to try them a different style. Another solid A+ choice was the fried squid. They looked like pale onion rings on a plate. The visual impression wasn't great but on a taste level, this was some of the freshest squid I've ever had. We raved about it and ended up comparing other restaurant's squid we tried on this trip to Mentrida's.
Two misses that I unfortunately need to mention - skip the grilled octopus. It certainly had the visual appeal when the server placed the dish on the table but there was no flavor. The entire dish fell flat and very short of expectations. Plus it was the most expensive item we ordered so that was disappointing.
We wrongly assumed that jamon would be something more exciting but it's just boring sliced jam. Lesson learned.
The two misses aside, we really enjoyed our meal at Mentrida. Despite language challenges, we received great service and attention. read more
