The idea here is to order dishes family style and so we ordered grilled octopuses and duck spring rolls for starters and then rice with calamari. The service here was also first rate and made our first night in Madrid truly memorable.

We ordered a salad which was a very unique dining experience because it came in a pot with scissors. You cut pieces off and topped it with chicken and egg plant it was honestly really cool. Next we had a Spanish pancake which was ok I personally wasn't crazy about it but it was good nothing crazy though. We followed this up with the croquets which were small but very tasty filled with ham and cheese. We then had the Potito or Baby Jar. It's egg mixed with truffle and garlic in a small jar. It was one of my favorites so much flavor in this dish. It went really well with the bread they serve. The duck racks were also very good nice amount of different flavors from all the assortment of toppings they bring you. The last tapa we had was the star of the show. The flaming steak was amazing m. The perfectly cooked steak was seasoned to perfection and they literally brought a fire to your table when they cooked it. I was in love with this dish and would definitely recommend it as a must have. For desert the last thing we had was the crema de queso. Definitely an interesting take on desert. This place is amazing one of the best dinner experiences I have had. Thank you Anthony Bourdain!!! Pro tip: this place is kind of hard to find. The restaurant was not extremely packed, but it was lively. It took a minute to find someone to seat us, and once we were seated our waiter told us we had about 10 minutes to order before the kitchen closed, although they advertised being open until 2am. We kept wondering why everyone was looking out at our table from the kitchen but no wait staff came over until finally we realized there was a buzzer on our table that we could use to summon the wait staff, get our check etx. When the waitress came over she was friendly and assured us we had enough time to order what we wanted from the kitchen. She also tried to speak English as best she could to explain what the dishes were. We ordered some typical tapas - Ravioli Burrata, Chicken Wings, Croquetas, Gyoza of Ropa Vieja, and Duck Tacos. The tacos were flavorful and the Gyozas were delicious. The other tapas were just ok, didn't stand out any more than others. I did not like the texture of the Ravioli and it is a cold dish so seemed bland to me. I thought the food was good overall, but it did seem a little pricey.

The menu del dia was a great value and included appetizer, entree, dessert, and a glass of wine for about 15e. The food was pretty good but the server was the best I've had in Spain (or maybe any where in Europe). There is no menu, the server is the menu. When he started to speak we tried to keep up with our limited Spanish and he stopped and asked if we'd prefer he speak in English. My wife told him she was trying to practice her Spanish so he offered to do the menu in Spanish first and then English. He spoke at a great pace and very clearly and then started joking with us, half in Spanish, half in English. It was really a nice experience. While the menu del dia is a fantastic deal, I think I'd go of the menu next time. The gentlemen at the table next to us had a stunning meal of jamon, a Spanish fried cheese, and then a beef entree which was cooked with a blowtorch at the table. Envious I was.

The excellent daily menu they offer has a starter, main course and dessert, with the option of paying 16 or 18 euros depending on the main dish you order. (look at pics attached) Starter: Chicken Salad Wock Style; the chicken was crunchy (breaded) and the salad as a whole was pretty well executed. Main Course: Ceviche Limeno; this dish is a Peruvian classic that consists of raw white fish cut into small cubes with sliced raw onion in a strong citric sauce. This was by far the highlight of the meal, the fish was fresh and the ratio of ingredients was superb. (my brother chose the tuna tartar which was another great dish, that came with a delicious nutty sauce.) Dessert: I chose the kiwi fruit platter witch was a peeled and nicely sliced fresh kiwi

Hello my friends, I…read moreknow it has been quite some time, but I'm coming at you with a Dan Hanis certified all-time great restaurant right here. Absolutely everything on this menu is delightful. I don't think you can go wrong anywhere. As I began my journey abroad, I roamed the streets of Madrid, and I happened to run into 4 lovely ladies. Catalina, Teresa, Alejandra, and the craziest of them all, my girlfriend Elizabeth! Elizabeth and I hadn't talked for a couple weeks since I left the family farming business. She was infuriated when she received the news that I was walking away from my destiny. She just didn't know if she could love someone who wasn't a farmer anymore. As I took a break from my cellular device, we hadn't talked since I left. Running into her in Spain was quite the surprise. She told me that I was just truly the greatest man in the world and that she would love me farmer or not. On her quest to find me, she became friends with these lovely ladies. To celebrate life we decided to have a lavish meal at Bar Tomate! Enough with the backstory, this restaurant is one of my favorites I've been to in the continent that is Europe. Sometimes it can get messy having a diverse menu, but Bar Tomate handles it with such class. To begin the night, I ordered a delicious Whiskey Sour (it reminded me of the beautiful fields of grain back in my homeland of the USA!). For my appetizer I ordered the ceviche which was absolutely mouthwatering. Every time I think of it, I immediately start to drool, so I try to limit myself from thinking of this incredible dish. The fish, onion, and avocado are just so well balanced with the acidic taste of the juice (I love juice). This dish makes it into the Dan Hanis Dish Hall of Fame. I cannot recommend this enough. For my entree, I ordered the chicken tikka masala. By no means was it the best I've ever had, but it was a delicious eat nonetheless. For dessert, after we'd been at the restaurant eating and drinking for a total of four hours, we ordered the brownie sundae. Bar Tomate had such a wonderful atmosphere, and the employees were in no rush to get us out of the door. To this day, Bar Tomate, gave me one of my favorite dining experiences, and I'll forever be grateful to them for it. It was wonderful to eat amazing food and make new friends. I can't wait to tell you about the rest of my journey across Europe. God Bless America and God Bless Food! Your glorious food king, Dan Hanis
