Nice clean bathroom. Nice dirty yelper.

I was going to give them a bad rating, but I don't want to deal with the Lynch mob, so I won't. I was going to say no to the stranger with candy in the parking lot, but I ended up getting in his Van. I was going to use the Loo in the lobby, but it was busy, so I had to use the Otterloo. Very interesting YMCA which was almost 99% Caucasian in terms of employees and patrons (which is a negative, obviously, as diversity is always better and I hope you agree) by the looks of it, on the day I was here, but then the North Shore is a bit like that. This is also is one of the busiest YMCAs I've ever been to in the sense of there was nothing that wasn't being used. At least they have lots of benches to compensate for the fact that they have so many people using it but still extremely busy. The woman at the front desk was not too friendly but at least she let me in without demanding identification. I appreciated that but definitely some attitudes on the way in and the people inside the gym where hit or miss in terms of their attitudes as well. A couple of nasty individuals indeed, but I have that at my gym too in Buffalo, even moreso in Houston. Great views and a beautiful location close to the beach - you can't really ask for much more than that. 4 stars only because it's farrrrr too busy

I am basing this review off of the overall fitness experience at the YMCA. I often wonder if the YMCA is a health club or a day care center. The place is always filled with children on the weekends and it seems as though their Parents just let them do whatever they want. Also, the majority of the middle aged female women that workout there are extremely caddy! The actualy equipment is good but during peak exercise times it can be very hard to get on the equipment because there's really only 1 of each kind of equipment. I do like that they have t.v.'s on most of the exerise machines but I had to write numerous suggestion cards because they wouldn't wouldn't play Fox News on the big TV and chose to show the biased media stations like CNN, ABC, and CBS. THey finally listended to my suggestion after I said I was going to cancel my membership and they now have Fox news playing on one of the big tv's. They have a large variety of exerise classes and alot of times which is convienet and probably the one of the best things about the YMCA besides the pool. The pool is awesome when their aren't children running amuck everywhere. Parking is an absolute nightmare!!! *****Here is a great tidbit. This YMCA is much more expensive than other YMCA"s in the area like Lynn, Peabody, or Beverly and they are all affiliated. So if your looking to save some money each month then sign up at one of the other affiliated YMCA's and just use the the Lynch van Otterloo YMCA because it's free of charge and there arent any restrictions!

Not cool to photo people working out so here's a shot of the cafe

Used to be good, filled with kids and bad locker rooms. Don't even try the outdoor pool when it's hot out, there are no lounges or chairs

Joe, the owner, is almost always around and the trainers he hires are knowledgable, supportive, and friendly. I started weight lifting at home with some dumbbells during the pandemic and was a little nervous about joining a 'real' gym but I didn't need to be - I really appreciated how welcoming everyone was and how it really feels like a community, even when you're brand new. After giving birth to burrito last year Phil and I rediscovered our love for food on the Northshore. We realized we were eating out almost every day and decided to capitalize on it by documenting our meals and experiences. The more restaurants we visited and reviewed, the more we wanted to share with our friends and family. This quickly became part of our routine. After doing this for several months, I realized this was supper counterproductive to losing the baby weight and overall health. I started going for 30min walks every day, and when that became super boring, I signed up for planet fitness, and when that didn't yield any results, I started taking yoga classes sporadically. I wasn't able to keep up with any of these for one reason or another, so I decided to move on to something new. As our blog grew and the length of time I spent on Instagram increased, I started to notice this gym pop up on friends' pages or in my feed sometimes in other friends' stories. White wolf seemed to be sending me subliminal messages. I spent weeks creeping and basically stalking their content before I finally decided to DM Joe, the owner. He invited me in to do a 2-week, and the rest is history. Phil and I are still working out some kinks in our routine, and the struggle to attend classes consistently is still there. But there's nothing like taking one of Joe's classes. This gym is the embodiment of Cross training. And Joe always keeps it interesting. I have yet to be bored or come out of a class feeling like I wish I never came. What does happen is your motivation is ignited. I'm continually hearing other members talk about how much stronger they are since coming here or sharing words of encouragement to stick with it and be consistent results will occur. When something in your life is changing you for the better, I feel like you have to share it!

Besides the workouts being on point, I've never belonged to a gym before where the instructors so genuinely care about their clients. I look forward to spending my mornings there and you feel so good when you leave after a class. After only a few sessions I boosted my subscription to the unlimited monthly. Ignore the previous reviewer who complained about needing to come early for the first session. It's stated explicitly several times when you register for your first (free!) class that you need to arrive early. They need to orient you to the space, the equipment, sign paperwork, etc. I'm sure there are liability issues making this not just their practice but a necessary policy. Anyone who would fault a business owner for that is clearly pretty self-important. Do yourself a favor and give OrangeTheory Swampscott a try!

They have a very strict policy that you must arrive at least 30 minutes before the class starts. I arrived 23 minutes before. They said it is corporate policy and denied me access. No one ever told me before it was a strict 30 minutes or I would not get access in. To be a stickler over 7 minutes and turn down someone new is just rude. I am NEVER going back. By the way, I have friends who are OTF instructors at another location and they said that would never happen at their location because they allow new clients in up to 20 minutes before. SO this strict corporate policy is BS. The folks at this location have no sense of how to treat clients. While the first class is free you could not pay me to go back there.

It's very possible that this is classic January busy-ness, but if you want a less packed gym, I'd recommend checking the app to see the crowd level. About 90% of the gym goers at the time were men so the women's locker room was very empty and all showers were available (4 showers which is more than some other locations). Overall the locker room was clean and the facility was nice, although the locker area was quite dark. The bathroom had some wet paper towels scattered around which was odd since there was no dispenser for them, but was otherwise relatively clean.

We visited on a Thursday evening at 6pm and the place was busy but not too packed yet. This was our first time at this location and we wanted to change our home gym but the lady at the desk was confused and gave us some bizarre information on how to go about that. We just checked in and carried on. The cardio equipment is set up in 2 rows spanning the length of the gym and there appears to be enough for everyone regardless of how busy they are. There is an area with free weights and actual squat racks with space to lay a mat out and workout. There is another area for abs and more free weights in that section. The equipment is laid out in a way that makes ideal sense based on muscle group (I've seen other PFs where machines are just haphazardly placed around) so this was a delight to see. At about 630pm the place was so busy most of the equipment was in use and there wasn't a single spot on the floor to stretch so I hopped back on the cardio equipment. After our workouts we hit up the Black Card Spa zone - I am so glad they have 3 cryo massage chairs. Those are great post-workout! All in all a great gym and I'm really glad its so close to our house.

We've also been quite picky about what our child eats and Cindy has been so flexible, patient and accommodating. Cindy also provides breakfast, lunch, snack and milk - I can't overstate what a huge benefit this is. Not having to pack lunch or worry about breakfast before we head to work in the AM is so great! She also provides wipes so all we have to worry about is diapers.
