I made a return trip to the World's Largest Chest of Drawers in High Point, NC. It was getting some…read morework done during my stop, so it had a fence around it. The best place to park is likely at the lot across the street. The Chest of Drawers is on a one-way street, so you might need to plan which lane to get in if traffic is heavy. High Point is considered the "furniture capital of the world." So the 38 feet high road side attraction is fitting. The piece was originally built in 1926 to welcome people to the area and promote the furniture. The design was different, and the bureau was smaller and had a mirror. It was painted white with floral accents. It wasn't a functioning piece of furniture as the drawers didn't open. Then in 1996, Sid Lenger, a High Point craftsman and designer, transformed the piece. He wanted a proper chest of drawers, so he designed and built one with hefty brass handles. This version also doesn't open, but is meant to look like a more realistic piece of high-end furniture. He also added the two pairs of six-foot-tall socks to acknowledge the hosiery industry. I hope whatever work is being done to the chest of drawers preserves the cherry wood finish's color as intended.

Remodeled in 1996, this is the new structure. Steel framing and stucco, it stands 38 feet high with simulated brass handles. And it even includes two giant socks as a tribute to High Point's hosiery industry There is plenty of parking nearby and if you're shopping for furniture at one of these many nearby showrooms, check it out. I really can't believe that no one has reviewed this lovely and interesting attraction in downtown Jamestown. This is the plantation that was owned by James Mendenhall, after whom Jamestown was named. He was part of a Quaker community, made up of people who actively opposed slavery and promoted education. The doctors office on this site was actually home to the first medical school in NC. The school was supervised by Dr. Shubal Coffin (I kid you not, that was his name) and the artifacts housed within are something to behold. If you're there during one of the events, you may be lucky enough to meet the local man who plays the part of Dr. Coffin and he will give you some real insight into medical practices of the time. There are several buildings, including (but not limited to) the main house, the medical office, the bankers barn and the spring house. There are herb gardens and beautiful grounds. Inside the bankers barn are several wagons, including one with a false bottom that was used to hide slaves and transport them to the north. We haven't taken an "official" tour yet, but were there for the Village Fair a few weeks ago and were able to pick up a lot of history. There are a couple of important events during the year. At the fair, we saw a real blacksmith at work and several women spinning both wool and silk into yarns. We really enjoyed the presentation by "Dr. Coffin," as well as the booths, activities for the kids and more. During the holidays, there will be a candlelight tour with music and tours of the traditionally decorated rooms. If you haven't been here, it's well worth the trip and the nominal fee for the tour. You'll be very impressed.

If you can't figure out a way to spend a day outside somewhere in all that, you might just not like the outdoors! The Piedmont Environmental Center serves as kind of a trailhead for the High Point Greenway, as well as a system of lakeside trails that run along city lake and the golf course. The welcome center is attractive on the outside, though decisively could use a facelift indoors. Still, it has what you need. Restrooms, vending, information and brochures, and even a small exhibit featuring native snakes and amphibians from the Piedmont. I never pass up a chance to check out some snakes, preferably behind glass like these. The trails make a great place for a light intensity hike, a simple nature walk, or just a place to walk the dog. On my visit, it was an overcast and cool day in early spring, so it's not quite time for peak visitors yet. I prefer this time of year, things are quiet and serene, and the trees are just starting to bloom. There is no shortage of signage along the trails, and ample places to make sure you clean up after your dog. Another note, if you're a Pokemon Go player, there are no less than 12(!) easy to access gyms at both the major hub around the visitor center, and then several along the trails, not to mention a litany of Pokestops. Please only read this information and follow it if you're on team Mystic. The rest of you can feel free to forget you read it. All of this is free, so get out and enjoy nature as North Carolina provides in abundance!
