Advocate of scientific agriculture. His plantation "Linwood" was 6 miles southwest. Built home here, 1834." Online, there is more information. "Dr. William Rainey Holt of Davidson County was among North Carolina's most versatile men of the nineteenth century. Born in Alamance County at the Holt homeplace (today the site is the Alamance County Historical Museum), William R. Holt was the brother of textile pioneer E. M. Holt and the uncle of Gov. Thomas Holt. Graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1817, Holt studied medicine in Philadelphia and soon after his marriage in 1822 set up practice in newly created Davidson County. Dr. Holt was among Lexington's first and leading citizens and purchased his home lot at an early courthouse sale. On that lot he constructed "The Homestead," a large Greek Revival house, in 1834, soon after his second marriage. That residence today is the oldest remaining home in the town. Holt, a Democrat and secessionist who lost three sons in the Civil War, had his house occupied by Union troops in 1865." I don't know if it is in the spot where the Civil War memorial stood but I would not be surprised. The marker reads, "Robert F. Sink. 1905-1965. U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Commanded 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during World War II and Fort Bragg 1957 to 1960. He lived nearby." Online, there is more information. "Robert Frederick Sink was a career U.S. Army officer who served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was born in 1905 in Lexington, North Carolina, and attended Trinity College (now Duke) for a year before transferring to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1927 and was initially commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Infantry Regiment at Fort Screven, Georgia. "In November 1940 Captain Sink was transferred to the 501st Parachute Battalion and entered the jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia. While attending the jump school he was promoted to major. He also caught the eye of Lieutenant Colonel William C. Lee, commander of the U.S. Provisional Parachute Group and considered to be the father of the American airborne. In August 1941, Sink was transferred to the newly-organized 503rd Parachute Battalion and assigned to command. In February 1942, Sink was promoted to lieutenant colonel. "In July 1942, Sink was reassigned to command the new 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, based at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. In June 1943, the regiment was assigned to become part of the 101st Airborne Division, commanded by Lee, by now a major general. The division was sent to England in the following month to begin preparations for participating in the D-Day Campaign (Operation Overlord). While retaining command of the 506th, Sink was also assigned to command the division's parachute jumping school, a position that he held from November 1943 to early May 1944. First and foremost: this is a private home in a quiet neighborhood and not a public museum /…read moreproperty. If you visit, please make sure to not enter the property / knock on the front door / disturb the family who lives there in any way. Respectful, okay? Okay, cool. That all being said -- this place is a historical landmark for Winston Salem and humanity as a whole. It was the home of writer/actress/director/activist Dr. Maya Angelou from 1994 until her death in 2014, when she passed away inside this home. Dr. Angelou once wrote a lovely little essay called "In the Valley of Humility" (published in the collection "Letter to My Daughter") about how and why she decided to make Winston-Salem her home. She decided on Winston-Salem in part because of the warmth and kindness she felt from the community at Wake Forest University, and decided to accept the position of lifetime Reynolds Professorship of American Studies there in 1981. This came after a divorce when she was looking for a "soft place to land". Anyone who has spent time in the Wake Forest part of Winston-Salem can certainly understand the appeal for her in that moment. Whenever I feel the need for a spiritual moment or reset, I like to quietly drive by her former home on Bartram. I take in the trees, how green and peaceful everything is. I pull out of the neighborhood and drive the few minutes down to the Wake Forest campus -- the same drive that Dr. Angelou likely made when she was heading over to speak or teach. It's really easy to understand why she picked Winston-Salem as her haven. Whenever I have visitors in from out of town, this is one of the first places I recommend that they visit. She may not live there anymore, and the house may now be painted deep blue instead of sunshine yellow, but driving by this house and down these streets -- especially after reading "In the Valley of Humility" -- allows so much in-depth insight into the day-to-day existence of one of the most cherished Southern writers of our time.

So we have been to the Fall Foliage Boat Ride today at Lake Townsend , we were take on a 14 person…read moreboat and were charged $6 for a 50 minute boat ride which covered pretty much the entire lake , the guide/ employee was pretty chill and covered a lot of history and dynamics and details of the dam and the wildlife around the lake . Though it was a cold day today i did enjoy the ride and how well maintained everything was . There wasnt anything scenic thats left as most of the trees lost all the leaves. We called in yesterday to see if the boat tours were available and they told us they were cancelled , so we called in today to check and they were open . So calling them ahead is a great idea if anyone plan to go .

Lake Townsend is the largest of the city of Greensboro NC's municipal reservoirs that covers over…read more1500 acres. It's located adjacent to the Bryan Park Complex & Golf Course. Lake Townsend Marina is open to the public 6 days a week, they are always closed on Wednesdays & during Nov-Feb it is closed Wed. & Thur. The marina has 2 boat ramps for boat launching, a really nice pier for pier fishing & also has rowboats, sailboats, canoes & kayaks available for rental, they even have an 8 person pontoon boat that is available to rent. This is a well maintained, always clean & neat facility worth checking out. We sometimes get lunch & head to the lake as there are a couple of picnic tables by the docks or I've seen some folks throw a blanket on the ground under the big shade tree for a real deal picnic. Just don't feed the geese, 'cause the sign says no to.

When I do reviews of cities and towns, I always review based on places of similar size. So I would…read morenot rate Lexington against New York, Nashville or Charlotte as examples. More like Lexington vs. Salisbury, Statesville, etc.. Nice town of 18,000 plus population, between Charlotte and Greensboro. Part of the Piedmont Triad with Winston-Salem, Greensboro and High point. The BBQ capital of North Carolina and recognized as one of the top places in the US for BBQ. I had low expectation of Lexington before visiting but I was wowed by how much this small town has to offer. Downtown This may be one of the best downtowns I have seen for a town of its size. Very healthy downtown area. Lots of shops, restaurants and places to get an adult drink. Downtown Lexington has a couple of places that are rare these days. One, a downtown grocery store (old school grocery) Conrad and Hinkle. Two, an old hardware store. Downtown grocery and hardware stores have all but gone away, so it is great to see both of these places doing well here. Parking is street parking, at least I didn't find any parking garages or lots. Signs on Main Street state two hour parking which is better than paid meters like you see in other places. There is a depot district in downtown that has a couple of breweries. This section also has a lot of empty buildings that appear to be old textile or furniture companies. This section of town has a lot of promise if they can get the right businesses to come in. Downtown Lexington is a great place for a day trip. Highly recommend it. Outside of downtown For a city of only 18K, you have about every big box store you need. Plenty of grocery store variety as well. There are at least three wineries close by, including Childress Vineyards on the west side of town. Oh and don't forget about the many BBQ places. I85 runs through the city. This gets you to Greensboro to the north and Charlotte to the south. Winston-Salem is a 20 minute or less drive from Lexington which is great.

Lewisville is a quiet lil town with a few locally owned businesses, 2 major grocery stores and an…read moreamazing elementary school. Lewisville neighborhoods are filled with quiet friendly ppl. It's the best place to live if u want not to be bothered a quick drive to the city and a great place for kids to grow up. i feel safe walking the streets, everyone waves.....I love it here. Plus the town provides free entertainment in our town square amphitheater on weekends with movies, plays or town events. Christmas parade is a grand event where tourist come from towns afar to catch candy in the streets as locals showoff cars or promote business. It's just a wonderful wonderful place.

Lewisville is a small town. I can't imagine it's larger than fifteen people. We have a strip mall…read moreand a library. We even have a fire dept and the guys are paid. We are not as big as our sister village of Clemmons. They are the fru fru around here. But Clemmons doesn't have Friday night in the park. We have a little amphitheatre and we show movies on Friday nights. A few weeks ago we had our beach celebration (i refused to shag) with tons of sand dumped on the streets. The July 4 fireworks attract people for miles (and their trash). I miss San Francisco but I kind of have a crush on this little town. Hell I might even run for mayor.
