The larger post office in Lexington is nice but always quite crowded if you're in a hurry and the parking is situated oddly there. Anyways, as I mentioned this is a smaller post office but they still offer the conveniences you would find at the main branch. Welcome is located between Lexington and Arcadia. So I find it really convenient to drop off packages for my business before going through Arcadia to get to Winston. The employees are usually friendly and helpful to answer any questions. They have a large table in the foyer which is handy if you're needing to pack things in boxes while you're there.

I don't know if it is in the spot where the Civil War memorial stood but I would not be surprised. The marker reads, "Robert F. Sink. 1905-1965. U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Commanded 506th Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during World War II and Fort Bragg 1957 to 1960. He lived nearby." Online, there is more information. "Robert Frederick Sink was a career U.S. Army officer who served in both World War II and the Korean War. He was born in 1905 in Lexington, North Carolina, and attended Trinity College (now Duke) for a year before transferring to the United States Military Academy at West Point. He graduated in 1927 and was initially commissioned a second lieutenant and assigned to the 8th Infantry Regiment at Fort Screven, Georgia. "In November 1940 Captain Sink was transferred to the 501st Parachute Battalion and entered the jump school at Fort Benning, Georgia. While attending the jump school he was promoted to major. He also caught the eye of Lieutenant Colonel William C. Lee, commander of the U.S. Provisional Parachute Group and considered to be the father of the American airborne. In August 1941, Sink was transferred to the newly-organized 503rd Parachute Battalion and assigned to command. In February 1942, Sink was promoted to lieutenant colonel. "In July 1942, Sink was reassigned to command the new 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, based at Camp Toccoa, Georgia. In June 1943, the regiment was assigned to become part of the 101st Airborne Division, commanded by Lee, by now a major general. The division was sent to England in the following month to begin preparations for participating in the D-Day Campaign (Operation Overlord). While retaining command of the 506th, Sink was also assigned to command the division's parachute jumping school, a position that he held from November 1943 to early May 1944. "As commander of the 506th Battalion, Sink participated in some of the most significant operations in the European Theater of Operations, including D-Day, the Arnhem Campaign (Operation Market Garden), the defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge, and the advance into Germany. He was popular with his men, who nicknamed the regiment "the Five-Oh-Sink." Sink was portrayed by actor Dale Dye in the television mini-series Band of Brothers." There is parking in the area. Check signs for enforcement times. [Review 1793 of 2024 - 3712 in North Carolina - 22816 overall]

It's in front of the Dollar General but there is a lot of brush between their parking lot and the sign. I don't recommend walking through the brush as there might be a snake and there's definitely poison ivy. The marker reads, "Yadkin College. A Methodist Protestant institution. Opened in 1856, made co-educational in 1878, closed in 1924. Building stands 1 mi. N." Online, there is more information. "Yadkin College opened in October 1856 as Yadkin Institute, a high school for young men, having been chartered by the General Assembly the previous year. Henry Walser, the individual most responsible for Yadkin College's success, donated the land for the institute and bore the expense of constructing the first classroom facilities and dormitory. One of three institutes of higher education sponsored by the Methodist Church in North Carolina, the school was rechartered as Yadkin College by the legislature in February 1861. "Shortly afterwards, the college closed as nearly all of its pupils enlisted in Confederate service with the opening shots of the Civil War. When classes resumed in 1867, the school operated as a high school once more, returning to collegiate courses in 1873 under the tutelage of president Shadrach Simpson. Five years later the first female students were allowed to attend classes. In 1883, the legislature changed the name to Yadkin Collegiate Institute. In 1924, the institute, suffering from low attendance as a result of the establishment of public schools in the state, consolidated with what is now High Point University, and the campus was abandoned."
